love these cars! got a Question , what would it cost to buy an engine if , God forbit you blew one up, i cant imagine youl find one on craigslist for $1000
if am correct these where 12 sec corvettes off the show room floor. the thing though was maintenance. You had to take it to gm and there was no two ways about it. Now if you have a low mile pristine one of these DOHC Corvettes you're in the money. They are worth a pretty penny now a days.
@TheRebuttle My buddy just bought one, mint shape for $20,000. the Local GM dealership didnt want to have anything to do with it. They just looked at it. and they didnt even know that GM made a corvette with a mercruser engine.. the dumb asses told them to take it to the local mercury dealersip!! It has a mild miss when its at lower RPMs. hard to explain, it happens so quickly.. probably somthin very simple. other than that, its great!
@Motorfordtoyota You're 50% correct. The lower end was designed by Mercruiser because they were known for building a powerful yet durable motor. BUT it was Lotus who brought in their sophisticated DOHC valve-train and allowing the thing to breath better as I believe this was during the time when GM owned Lotus.
@relaxitsonlyagame Actually the LT5 was exclusively built by Mercury Marine in Stillwater Oklahoma, then shipped to bowling green to be put in the ZR-1. It was collaboratively engineered and designed from the ground up by GM and Lotus. They originally started to use the L98 block with just DOHC lotus heads but scrapped that plan in favor of a totally new engine.
Really? WRONG! Despite what you may think; if you've got the cash, this engine has the potential to become a MONSTER.. My dad's boss dumped $20k into one and it's pushing 1,200-hp.. It's too bad that GM got rid of it's DOHC engines.. DOHC technology is the future.
@Sarcasticscum im not gona dump 20k into my motor sorry. if you dumped 20k into an lt1 or lt4 you would get the same maybe more so i dont see the point your making here?
The same with an LT1 or LT4?? Ok, MAYBE an LT4, but there's no way that you can put a push-rod engine on the same pedestal as a DOHC engine.. That LT1 ain't got nothin' on an LT5... A DOHC engine's ability to soar up into 8,000+ RPMs and stay there makes it better, because it withholds the ability to crank out it's maximum horsepower for a longer amount of time before shifting..
@Sarcasticscum can you prove that? the fact is pushrod engines make more torque which is needed to get the car moving and keep it moving thats why they dont rev to a milions rpms hondas rev to a milion rpms and people talk about how slow they are all the time. not only that but cars that rev higher usually have higher gear ratios so they rev quicker the time it takes a low rev engine to rev from 2-4k the other will be reving much higher. not every car is geared the same
What is the max speed of this C4?????

Lotus helped them build a pretty damn good motor for this car.

@SpikeRazzor Lotus did more than help, they designed the thing from the ground up.
