These postures bare only a passing resemblance to the postures explained in Peter Kelder's Book. I have been practising the 5 Tibetan Rites for years; if you want a you tube video showing what the postures are really like and how they should be done, then the video by Flyogi is a good one. I'm sure there are others, but I'm afraid this video is more misleading than helpful.
To the people who have no clue about 5 tibetan rites and want to try them, look up 5 tibetan rites Peter Kelder. There should be a free pdf of his book which gives you a clear description on how to do them. Do not follow this.

The 5 rites are one of breathing practice throughout in Orient.
The slower, deep, continuous, uniform, eventually unconsciousness of breathing. It's the concept of the breathing. For us, the ordinary, 2~3 cycles a minute may be appropriate target in relaxed posture as 1 year achievement, 3~4 cycles while 5 rites movements.
Wait, those are more yoga than Five Tibetan Rites! The third one is not correct at all. It can be good for your spine, but it's not really Five Tibetan Rites!

I don't think the Five Tibetans are considered yoga. I learned to do these starting out only three reps per week of each exercise and adding one additional per week until can do 21. However, these are not the exercises as I learned them, but appear to be adaptations that are simpler than the real 5 Tibetans, especially Rite 3 here is not being done correctly.

ive watched 4 minutes of this vid and i had enough. No mentions whatsoever at the beginning of the vid that those rites should be done 3 reps each for a beginner.. 21 reps is only at the 10th week, besides i agree with the others, the rites are performed wrong in this vid.. If shes such a good teacher, why isnt she mentioning the right things to do..
Maybe the exercises work well for some people but they are not the 5 Tibetan Rites. Call them something else. MaryseMoerel performs them perfectly, including the breathing. However, the book "Ancient Secrets of the Fountain of Youth" by Peter Kelder is the ultimate resource. It would be a tragedy to practice the rights for years only to realize that you were doing them all wrong, and the true benefits could not be reached.

This has almost to do with the rites I read about in the book. I watched it to make sure I was doing it correctly and I agree, it is the five Tibetan wrongs.
I just read Peter's book last week. I think it's really important to stick to the Rites as he describes them and doing them in the order which he describes. It's much like a doctor prescribing medicine and he tells you to take it for X amount of days and you do it for only half the amount giving you half a result or no result. Peter's information is groundbreaking and comes from a higher order. This is powerful and we must be careful to not be led astray from TRUTH. Namaste

There is only one of the ones she does in this video, the third one, that I'm not sure where she got it. All the others are the rites that I know (granted the ones I know may not be the same as Kelder's) or alternative (easier) forms of. The third one reminds me of what I know as a hindu pushup, but that is not one of the rites that I'm aware of. Definitely similar in style. 21 is the magic number. I still wouldn't call this presentation wrong or incorrect.
I'm not going to say this is all wrong or incorrect. They are different than the ones I learned/found by Mary Kurus. Some of the ones in this video are the alternative exercises, or other variations. The "original"? No. A variation of, yes. Doesn't make it wrong or less effective, just different. As far as I can tell, Sarah Kline doesn't claim that this is the "original" in any place. Not sure that the one's by Kelder qualify as "original" either. Did the first Tibetan monks do them that way?
@TowerKeeperDizze The answer to your question is Yes. The Five Tibetan Rites is the name of a very specific energy movement that Peter Kedler wrote about in his book called Fountain of Youth. There are many wonderful energy movements: Tai Chi, Yoga, and Qi Gong to mention a few. All have many forms and Specific Forms. What we are all saying, not to make her wrong, just to correct or rename her video. It is her version, maybe "Yoga Five Tibetans", however it is not Five Tibetans Rites;p
I like this lady very much. She got misled along the way. I hope that she gets corrected properly and continues to teach properly. She herself has such a good presence and attitude about herself.
Proper yoga is not any kind of exercise class where you can make idle chit-chat throughout, the whole point is to overcome that chatter and focus within. Plus these are not the proper thing, the originals are not the same at all.
Very interesting. When I was in back therapy, my therapist had me do this exact routine, only skipping the first one. It was a 2 hour workout, and this routine was somewhere in the middle of it.

Rite 2, inhale first, then apply throat lock, then lift the extended leg, I did not bother seeing all of this. Do this right or remove the vid and stop putting your own version out there, buy the book
As the rightness or wrongness...preposterius. The idea of right or wrong is not dogmatic but what is effective. But i will say that her #3 is in my tradition a variation used for the novice for #5. In our #1 one palm is up and one palm down. In my tradition, we also do rite #6.
it seems 274 people like this video and only a minority of 77 do not. i have done the Five Tibetans for 20 years. I have no problem with sarah's method here and her method in the vid seems to be geared to the beginner. A novice should not do these rites too quickly especially rite #1.
It is wrong movements you are teaching! Please return to the sorce for the five tibetan rites. Learn them the right way! Have myself teaching this rites for at least ten years.
This is terrible. These aren't the Tibetan Rites!!! It's like a beginners Yoga class or something. And wheres the 6th one? Its quite important as far as I'm concerned. Typical of us westerners changing Eastern traditional exercises and arts so we can try and sell something unique. :(
I agree with the 2 following comments. This is all wrong... This is not the 5 Tibetan Rites except for the physical resemblance of the 4th and 5th one. Also and unfortunately the spiritual aspect of this powerful practice is missing. The joking during these Rites seems totally inappropriate... This video should be removed.
Sarah, this is amazing that you would promote these as The 5 Tibetan Rites and even reference the book. it is only right that you state at the start of this video that these are variations of the 5 Tibetan rites and that you made them up.

I like Sarah, she is a very inspiring teacher, maybe she had her reasons posting a slightly different way of doing this exercises. Just open your mind guys isn't this one of the reasons you are practicing yoga?
what's so amazing. we have 134 comments here. And lots of them are by people who do the ORIGINAL 5 tibetans as described in the book by Kelder. The lady never replied to ANY of those comments. And I don't doubt she's a good yoga teacher, but IF she teaches the 5 Tibetans, she should do it the RIGHT way. Somebody suggested to delete this video because the 5 Tibetans are done ALL WRONG. All wrong! Completely different from the original Peter Kelder book. If you doubt it, just compare it to the book drawings. For instance: Rite #1 needs to be much faster in order to incresae the head vortex speed. Check it on page 23.
Check also Rite #2 on page 27 and compare it to the video: legs should be streched fully vertical.
This is a problem that many students make; thinking there is only one way to do things. There are variations of all exercises; many different Sun Salutations, for example. Get rid of this rigid way of thinking and your practice will be more beneficial.
@casb10 Not completely. You move as fast as you can while staring at middle finger, then gradually increase speed. Meditation is nothing without good form. Just like playing a guitar, first we master our technique, then we increase it. Everything starts from a good core technique.
@casb10 There are no right or wrong. All exercises need to be adapted to your needs and your mental and physical constitution. If you feel you have to do it exactly as the original, go ahead but don't expect everyone do them that way.
How confusing! I got the book in the early 90's and these are all a little bit different. However, it could be that they serve the same purpose. I'm a little thrown off with the breathing being different in #2 and #5, though (aside the the exercises being slightly different.) I've seen her variations, though, in other yoga practices and even in Taoist health practices, so perhaps they all get you to the same result? I'm going to try them her way, too, despite knowing they're not the orig.
I studied some of the books as well. Everyone has their own interpretation of what they were, but i think they all could benefit you and stimulate your chakras.

again these are incorrect - please do not post incorrect teachings of these very special 'Rites' . You need to learn these from a teacher who knows and understands them . You can read the book by Christopher S. Kilham. Kind of corny but MUCH better then this !!

For everyone complaining about these not being the proper rights, please provide links to what are the proper ones. Instead of just complaining, contribute and help everyone out by giving us a basis for comparison.
We all have a right to our opinions, but we can also help in the process as well.
(keep in mind that she is performing with professional athletes. I think that alone should have hinted to beginners that this is NOT a beginners exercise. Do what other suggest and do only a few.
I think it's important that we practice and teach the rites as they were originally taught. If we begin to teach "our own version" then in time the original five will be unrecognizable. As teachers, I think we have the responsibility not to possess as our own, but to teach ... as it is.
In the book "Ancient Secret Of The Fountain Of Youth" by Peter Kelder, the rites are described (along with pictures) in the book. Once you get a feel for them in the book, you will see why these are a little off and maybe be able to find someone doing them correctly. OR.. make one to post yourself? ;)
These are not being done correctly and a new practitioner should NOT start out doing 21 of these. Beginners begin with three reps for first week increasing 2 reps each week until you reach 21.
Thank you for this great video. I have watched a video Tsem Tulku Rinpoche teaches PROSTRATION. I would like to know if prostration is a Tibetan meditation practice as I always see Tibetan Buddhist doing prostrations. Also, the way to prostrate taught by Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, is it only for Tibetan Buddhism?
I began doing them 4 days ago and my whole body is aching, asking for forgiveness! :-( the first rite i can only do 6 before i become nauseated. The others i can only do 11 repetitions so far. I´m hanging there, though.

ok, i hate to be a snob but these are NOT the correct way to do or learn the Tibetan Rites. Also you should start with whatever you are comfortable with, on odd numbers, like 1,3,5,7 etc. Not everyone can do 21 .They are very esoteric. They should also be done clockwise, they also have a chin lock. There is NO inchworm? I dont know what the heck she is doing !! There is no childs pose. Oh Boy !! She dosent even talk about the chin lock or the endocrine system !
lovely... by the way, the c or ch in "chakra" is pronounced (kind of) like the ch in charlie, not like sh in shock. Sanskrit has 3 c or ch sounds, all of which sound more like our charlie; the language has 3 s or sh sounds, all of which sound more like sock or shock. cakra or chakra is not one of the s sounds.
Well, with all the good intentions the lady got lots of things wrong from the perspective of the book she is referring to, Kelder, Peter "Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth". The second book created by Peters' followers some time in the 1980's details a lot of aspects and would be useful especially if you get into teaching the rites

Colonel Bradford didn't have any knowledge on deep breathing.
Please learn and practise "hypo. breath." before you have interest in 5 rites.

I just read Peter's book last week. I think it's really important to stick to the Rites as he describes them and doing them in the order which he describes. It's much like a doctor prescribing medicine and he tells you to take it for X amount of days and you do it for only half the amount giving you half a result or no result. Peter's information is groundbreaking and comes from a higher order. This is powerful and we must be careful to not be led astray from TRUTH. Namaste

Ditto: The Fountain of Youth (FOY) movements or Five Tibetans are a lot like many energy movements. However Five Tibetans are very specific, done slowly and the breath between each movement is very important. Order the book Fountain of Youth by Peter Kelder. There is only one of the ones she does in this video, the third one, that I'm not sure where she got it. All the others are the rites that I know (granted the ones I know may not be the same as Kelder's) or alternative (easier) forms of. The third one reminds me of what I know as a hindu pushup, but that is not one of the rites that I'm aware of. Definitely similar in style. 21 is the magic number. I still wouldn't call this presentation wrong or incorrect.

I'm not going to say this is all wrong or incorrect. They are different than the ones I learned/found by Mary Kurus. Some of the ones in this video are the alternative exercises, or other variations. The "original"? No. A variation of, yes. Doesn't make it wrong or less effective, just different. As far as I can tell, Sarah Kline doesn't claim that this is the "original" in any place. Not sure that the one's by Kelder qualify as "original" either. Did the first Tibetan monks do them that way?

@TowerKeeperDizze The answer to your question is Yes. The Five Tibetan Rites is the name of a very specific energy movement that Peter Kedler wrote about in his book called Fountain of Youth. There are many wonderful energy movements: Tai Chi, Yoga, and Qi Gong to mention a few. All have many forms and Specific Forms. What we are all saying, not to make her wrong, just to correct or rename her video. It is her version, maybe "Yoga Five Tibetans", however it is not Five Tibetans Rites;p

Proper yoga is not any kind of exercise class where you can make idle chit-chat throughout, the whole point is to overcome that chatter and focus within. Plus these are not the proper thing, the originals are not the same at all.

Very interesting. When I was in back therapy, my therapist had me do this exact routine, only skipping the first one. It was a 2 hour workout, and this routine was somewhere in the middle of it.

The "5 rites" is not authentic Tibetan yoga. If you want the real deal, look up Trul Khor or Yantra Yoga.

Yoga today is not what it was way back when, sad to see how people are reinventing Yoga around a lack of real schooling or ignorance, how many new generation teachers do short teacher training of a few months.
Rite 2, inhale first, then apply throat lock, then lift the extended leg, I did not bother seeing all of this. Do this right or remove the vid and stop putting your own version out there, buy the book

As the rightness or wrongness...preposterius. The idea of right or wrong is not dogmatic but what is effective. But i will say that her #3 is in my tradition a variation used for the novice for #5. In our #1 one palm is up and one palm down. In my tradition, we also do rite #6.

it seems 274 people like this video and only a minority of 77 do not. i have done the Five Tibetans for 20 years. I have no problem with sarah's method here and her method in the vid seems to be geared to the beginner. A novice should not do these rites too quickly especially rite #1.

This is terrible. These aren't the Tibetan Rites!!! It's like a beginners Yoga class or something. And wheres the 6th one? Its quite important as far as I'm concerned. Typical of us westerners changing Eastern traditional exercises and arts so we can try and sell something unique. :(

It may not be specified, but these appear to be a beginner's version of the rites.
Once the beginner becomes proficient, they can increase the speed and repetition while tweaking the form.

I agree with the 2 following comments. This is all wrong... This is not the 5 Tibetan Rites except for the physical resemblance of the 4th and 5th one. Also and unfortunately the spiritual aspect of this powerful practice is missing. The joking during these Rites seems totally inappropriate... This video should be removed.

what's so amazing. we have 134 comments here. And lots of them are by people who do the ORIGINAL 5 tibetans as described in the book by Kelder. The lady never replied to ANY of those comments. And I don't doubt she's a good yoga teacher, but IF she teaches the 5 Tibetans, she should do it the RIGHT way. Somebody suggested to delete this video because the 5 Tibetans are done ALL WRONG. I totally agree.

the poses are incorrect and the instructions are full of words that the instructor is using trying to sound smart and some how more intelligent, which only makes her much less authentic and trustworthy.

All wrong! Completely different from the original Peter Kelder book. If you doubt it, just compare it to the book drawings. For instance: Rite #1 needs to be much faster in order to incresae the head vortex speed. Check it on page 23.
Check also Rite #2 on page 27 and compare it to the video: legs should be streched fully vertical.

This is a problem that many students make; thinking there is only one way to do things. There are variations of all exercises; many different Sun Salutations, for example. Get rid of this rigid way of thinking and your practice will be more beneficial.

@casb10 Not completely. You move as fast as you can while staring at middle finger, then gradually increase speed. Meditation is nothing without good form. Just like playing a guitar, first we master our technique, then we increase it. Everything starts from a good core technique.

@casb10 There are no right or wrong. All exercises need to be adapted to your needs and your mental and physical constitution. If you feel you have to do it exactly as the original, go ahead but don't expect everyone do them that way.

Rite 2 - Feet are supposed to go much higher-over the head, legs straight. Hands stay on the ground, pressing.
Rite 3- all wrong. not even the right exercise.
Rite 4- close enough
Rite 5 -INHALE when you jackknife into the V position.

How confusing! I got the book in the early 90's and these are all a little bit different. However, it could be that they serve the same purpose. I'm a little thrown off with the breathing being different in #2 and #5, though (aside the the exercises being slightly different.) I've seen her variations, though, in other yoga practices and even in Taoist health practices, so perhaps they all get you to the same result? I'm going to try them her way, too, despite knowing they're not the orig.

slick new age schlock for the six schlockras. want the real thing? search for the original "Six Yogas Of Naropa" not this watered-down pseudo-yogurt. Tibetan Yoga is far more than moving, stretching, posing and breathing. Search for it - find someone who knows it, you will see.

again these are incorrect - please do not post incorrect teachings of these very special 'Rites' . You need to learn these from a teacher who knows and understands them . You can read the book by Christopher S. Kilham. Kind of corny but MUCH better then this !!

For everyone complaining about these not being the proper rights, please provide links to what are the proper ones. Instead of just complaining, contribute and help everyone out by giving us a basis for comparison.
We all have a right to our opinions, but we can also help in the process as well.
(keep in mind that she is performing with professional athletes. I think that alone should have hinted to beginners that this is NOT a beginners exercise. Do what other suggest and do only a few.

I think it's important that we practice and teach the rites as they were originally taught. If we begin to teach "our own version" then in time the original five will be unrecognizable. As teachers, I think we have the responsibility not to possess as our own, but to teach ... as it is.

In the book "Ancient Secret Of The Fountain Of Youth" by Peter Kelder, the rites are described (along with pictures) in the book. Once you get a feel for them in the book, you will see why these are a little off and maybe be able to find someone doing them correctly. OR.. make one to post yourself? ;)

These are not being done correctly and a new practitioner should NOT start out doing 21 of these. Beginners begin with three reps for first week increasing 2 reps each week until you reach 21.

Thank you for this great video. I have watched a video Tsem Tulku Rinpoche teaches PROSTRATION. I would like to know if prostration is a Tibetan meditation practice as I always see Tibetan Buddhist doing prostrations. Also, the way to prostrate taught by Tsem Tulku Rinpoche, is it only for Tibetan Buddhism?

I began doing them 4 days ago and my whole body is aching, asking for forgiveness! :-( the first rite i can only do 6 before i become nauseated. The others i can only do 11 repetitions so far. I´m hanging there, though.

ok, i hate to be a snob but these are NOT the correct way to do or learn the Tibetan Rites. Also you should start with whatever you are comfortable with, on odd numbers, like 1,3,5,7 etc. Not everyone can do 21 .They are very esoteric. They should also be done clockwise, they also have a chin lock. There is NO inchworm? I dont know what the heck she is doing !! There is no childs pose. Oh Boy !! She dosent even talk about the chin lock or the endocrine system !

lovely... by the way, the c or ch in "chakra" is pronounced (kind of) like the ch in charlie, not like sh in shock. Sanskrit has 3 c or ch sounds, all of which sound more like our charlie; the language has 3 s or sh sounds, all of which sound more like sock or shock. cakra or chakra is not one of the s sounds.

Well, with all the good intentions the lady got lots of things wrong from the perspective of the book she is referring to, Kelder, Peter "Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth". The second book created by Peters' followers some time in the 1980's details a lot of aspects and would be useful especially if you get into teaching the rites
