I dislike the first passed the post system but I hate the alternative vote system even more. Please lets have some reform that would actually make the system fairer i.e equal sized constituency's determined by an independent panel not politicians
The British Electoral Survey found that 87% of peoples votes under FPTP are for their actual preference, not tactical. OK - that means 13% of people vote y rather than z to keep x out, but that is better than a system which forces people to feel they have to give extra votes to the compromise/middle party.
I want principled politics, not candidates which are many things to many people, so break promises.
The assumption that you vote for the candidate you favour is incorrect. Many people, including myself, are already voting for our 2nd or 3rd preference candidates under FPTP. Under FPTP, you can only really influence the outcome of an election if you pick from the list of candidates that are capable of winning. However, under AV, you can still do this, but also register that your main support lies with another candidate. This is why AV actually liberates voters, and gives them more choice.

Very few voters are as devious as this.
