  • Can you imagine what kinds of trouble, joy, love, death-feelings, depressions and trancendentialism you have to go through to write this kind of music?

    This music is the world!!

Rach went throgh so much!! And he shared his life with us through his music!!

Cheers for Rach, for classical music and for music in general! This makes me so happy!!! :)) <3

  • yes I have decided: Gershwin influence here in plenty. An American concerto by the archetypal Russian composer. It could never quite work that way.

  • @newgeorge. Yes, indeed! Try searching for "Part V Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 4 Original Version" – magnificent ending. For some reason it won't let me put a link on these comments.

  • I have been listening to the original version of this Concerto on repeat (probably to the great annoyance of my wife and neighbours) and this updated version is a totally different piece. And a disappointment, although I'll have to try it again.

  • @domcogan Is the original concerto anywhere on youtube?

  • The concerto is less normative than the others. But the melody at 2:33 is one of the most beautiful, and most Scriabin-esque of all. Also it is modernist, at least in the last movement. The composer is playing with the form.

  • and the low piano grumbles at 6:55 the 3rd piano concerto 3rd movement, almost direct quote. This last movement is very simillar in orchestration and thematic material to the first piano concerto 3rd movement. possibly why it was not as popular as the second which followed archetypal romantic structure and orchestration

  • the octave jumps down remind me of concerto No.1 3rd movement

  • One of the "problems" I hear with the fourth is that Rachi never found that one great melody he found with 2 and 3. Instead, we get flash and glam, but I always keep waiting for him to bust through with that one great melody. Another thing, his original conception of the concerto which has been recorded was much, much longer, more elaborate, more "organic" but a true trial at about 1 hour and 20 minutes for any pianist, conductor, orchestra to play. Still, to me it is the ultimate!

  • @wantbearhug you nailed exactly what i was thinking, im sure many others think it too!

  • Perfect in every sense. It is so difficult to play....(¸.•¨¯`*•●♥Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ♥...

  • I simpy wonder the meaning of life for someone who can create and imagine all this, I don't know much of music, but in this masterpiece you can clearly feel the vast and detailed language it represents for someone who leaves a deep clue in all the listeners.

  • 8:11

    Perfection. It's absolute musical perfection!

  • It's not more diffucult than anothers ones. It's unpopular because the people minds it's limited! This concert it's about the end of his life, with no possibilities to seem his lost Russian again. He remains his early days in the sign church bell in the first moviment, and de popular russians dances on the third moviment. The 2o. concert was written to his wife, the 3o. to the new world, the 4o. was written to himself.

  • Ashkenazy and Rachmaninoff are god-like.

  • I really like the way Ashkenazy plays this.

  • I really love this playing and interpretation. He plays with wonderful musical flair.

  • than you, now I've heard em all!

  • ashkenazy plays this just about perfectly. some interpretations use way too little rubato but ashkenazy uses the perfecct amount in certain spots.

  • absolutely perfect!!!!!!!!!!!

  • amazing!!!ha!

  • Many comments here on why this concerto has not enjoyed the same popularity of his other concerti. I think this piece was very transitional for Rachmaninoff. It is not as structurally cohesive as the 2nd or 3rd. But...this piece is far more interesting harmonically. I think his exposure to a variety of different styles by this time in his career (jazz, blues, etc.) had an impact in him. This is my favorite of al his concerti.

  • The second and third concerti really grip you from the first note and don't let go until the last. Stylistically, they also are quite different from the Fourth. My words simply cannot do justice to Rachmaninoff's profound and inspired musical vision; but many of my friends never really moved beyond the 2nd and 3rd because of how passionately and painfully moving they are.

  • 2:32-3:10...pure bliss. I don't know if I've ever heard anything as beautiful as these 38 seconds.

  • @clyvemontague

    What about 4:34 to 4:44?

  • It is my favorite of his concertos. Very few pianist can play this concerto correctly. (I believe this is the third revision of the concerto being played)

I highly recommend the interpretation by Michelangeli Benedetti. Quite remarkable.

Unlike the other concerto, if the interpretation is not perfect in synched with the orchestra then the piece becomes very monotonous and boring.

    Great interpretation.

  • This movement defined how Rachmaninov was later influenced by American music. If you listen closely, you can hear bits of jazz.

  • Absolutely brilliant...

My teacher says this concert is unpopular cause it is so difficult to play, for the pianist and also for the orchestra and above all it is difficult to play it both together... I don´t know...

  • This is fabulous playing. There is wonderful raport beteen Ashkenazy and Andre Previn. I also love his recording of the Rachmaninov Paganini Variations with Andre Previn. Another wonderful recording.

  • @LCH14

yes, but not only to play - to listen - professional listening means, not usual:)

However there is one more "small" detail - first playing was not so successful because Rakhmaninov has surpassed expectations of public. The New Concerto was wery ...futuristic. Jokingly, but "c'est la vie".

  • @LCH14 Yes, this concert is very difficult to play, but that's not the reason that explains its unpopularity that got in its time. The reason is that the people was very used to listen to the 3 other concerts that he wrote, which are more romantic style than this 4th one. This last one hasn't got such a great melody as the great 3rd or 2nd concert and also have got other style, more jazzy. I know this because I read an extense biography of this great composer. Althought, this concerto is great.

  • this is probably my favorite movement out of any of his concertos. i dont know why its not popular at all it.. its amazing!

  • I really love this recording. there is great raport between soloist and conductor. In an interview he mentioned that Andre Previn was one of his favourites when he was playing piano concertos.

  • Only 484 views. Wow, this really IS his least popular concerto. I personally love it.

  • Fantastic! Thank u for sharing

  • The finalle is very difficult!

  • Yes, but i think concerto d minor is more diffucult.

I have no idea why this concerto is so unpopular :(

  • Thank you for Sharing !
