Qat is a problem in Yemen because it takes up to much farmland and the production consumes to much water. Not because the drug itself is very harmful (can cause impotence I've heard). If in the west a working class citizen goes to the pub and spends the rest of the day drinking beers and talking with his friends it would be considered quite normal. @MuthaFukinRaver Concerning my drug use, I have chronic pain and have been prescribed a painkiller for years, and yeah, I like beer. I am certain Qat is less harmful that that combo. I am 50, so I don't use any illicit drugs, but did at one time, recreationally. If the individual feels that they don't have an addictive personality, I have no issues with moderate drug/alcohol use. The ugly truth is, drugs can be fun, and with a few exceptions, most outgrow it. I favor decriminalization.
Seeing that you live in the beautiful city of Amsterdam, I have to say that the Netherlands and it's enlightened policies are the example that should be used for decriminalization. The fact that drugs are illegal in the US has never stopped anyone from getting high. My nation and it's failed drug policies has shamelessly turned otherwise law abiding citzens into outlaws.

I think a real problem with contemporary societies is a lack of self control - blaming addiction and consequences on the substance rather than on the attitudes of the people using it (consider how qat is less addictive than the substances that listed above). Many substances have beneficial effects in moderate doses, and I'm sure qat is one.
That doesn't absolve them of the fact that an entire population is addicted to a substance.

By the way they describe its effects, it sounds a lot like caffeine. An entire culture is addicted to caffeine, it takes up land that could be used to grow food, and once you crash from caffeine, you feel lazy. Not entirely sure why caffeine hasn't demolished our culture. I am sort of thinking that Qat isn't the real problem in Yemen. Maybe there is a reason why politicians there act like it is...

So, we guzzle coffee over here. So what if people want to work 4 hours and then go off to Qat houses where they socialize with friends all day? In our modern society, we think technology and industry has led to increased leisure time, but everyone here is always working and isolated, and for what? Why is work in and of itself a virtue? Sounds like Yemenis have a nice life to me. You know, with tight knit families, friends, community etc.

Qat doesn't really affect you infact it can help (keeps you working, awake, helps you revise). every other drug is worse than qat. qat is not the reason why yemen is becoming so poor, it is the lack of education. every nation is on drugs and yemen is nowhere near the worst nation on drugs.

Qat is a problem in Yemen because it takes up to much farmland and the production consumes to much water. Not because the drug itself is very harmful (can cause impotence I've heard). If in the west a working class citizen goes to the pub and spends the rest of the day drinking beers and talking with his friends it would be considered quite normal. But if a Yemense does the same with Qat instead of beer it's really really bad? That is hypocrisy!

@rutgers1961 Negative habits are a larger category where as drugs are a sub category.Pornography addiction and gambling have their own sub categories but are not criticized equally to drugs where as drugs can affect health over time or in the case of severe drugs, ruin brain functionality.Alcoholics are in closer relation to drug abusers although alcohol is less threatening to your health and when used in moderation can be quite safe.Assuming you'd like a Qat tree, probably a drug user/supporter

At the end of this 15 minute lecture on the "evils" of Qat, the conclusion is that there is no evidence that Qat is addictive or harmful. So what is the filmakers point?
My contention is we shouldn't criticise others until we examine our own societies habits. This is blatant hypocrisy.

@MuthaFukinRaver Concerning my drug use, I have chronic pain and have been prescribed a painkiller for years, and yeah, I like beer. I am certain Qat is less harmful that that combo. I am 50, so I don't use any illicit drugs, but did at one time, recreationally. If the individual feels that they don't have an addictive personality, I have no issues with moderate drug/alcohol use. The ugly truth is, drugs can be fun, and with a few exceptions, most outgrow it. I favor decriminalization.

@billy1212ist Yes you did say that. You basically said that Qat's effect makes you lazy and drunk when you compared to coffee's effect, read your comment again. I said "probably" about how many fuckin coffee cups it equals, it did not ruin any statement, its clear, Qat is like coffee but stronger. By the way, fyi we do not "speak" here, we "write" :-), no offense. You never tried qat so don't talk crap please, you can eat qat and do math at the same time, it doesn't affect you in a negative way.

I think a real problem with contemporary societies is a lack of self control - blaming addiction and consequences on the substance rather than on the attitudes of the people using it (consider how qat is less addictive than the substances that listed above). Many substances have beneficial effects in moderate doses, and I'm sure qat is one.
That doesn't absolve them of the fact that an entire population is addicted to a substance.
