2005-2009 Discovery 3/LR3 and 2010- Discovery 4/LR4 have open front & rear differentials standard, using 4-wheel ABS braking to transfer torque side-to-side. A infinitely-variable electronic locking center differential is standard, to transfer torque front-to-rear, and is controlled by Terrain Response, the driver cannot lock/unlock the center differential at will. An electronic locking rear differential is optional, and if equipped, is also controlled by Terrain Response.
With directional street tires the proper technique for muddy terrrain is to spin them fast which will clean out the lugs and abruptly let off the gas, this will let the cleaned out tread get a good bite, then you ease the throttle being careful not to spin the tires. I have Maxxis Marauders on my 04 Disco II and cannot wait until they wear out so I can get a proper AT.
Very nice video. If you had proper tires on there you would've done MUCH better. I also have streets on my LR3 but have the '08 model :) Best SUV in the world IMO.
im with davyjhones on this. tires are the big decider. I have a disco 3 and my rear tires ar scorpions but very low and my fron are new but the tread pattern is like something on a sports car. In the now it was bad, all over the place. I also do off roading with a kitted disco 1 but that never stops at nothing. Mud snow rocks. No probs. driver error is some cases yes but tires are the biggy
i dn't get how they can justify saying we make thebest 4X4's in the world and then send all their cars from the factory with road tyres.a 4X4 is meant to be a car that can go anywhere any time not (oh i can't possibly ford that little stream because i don't have my all terrain tyres on). just yesterday after it snowed here in norwich me nd mymum were gliding along happily in our disco II with all terrains on and the number of disco's flailing aound on the ice cuz of road tyres was embarrasing
You can't tell from this video but those are the road tires slick as can be, and look what they do. It seems the people flailing around on the ice lack the necessary skill.
the problem are the tires.i also have street tires on my disco 2 and it is a fail to go through deep mud.look at my video.were stuck for 2 hours.upgrade to some a/t's
I don't see any problem here. The tires on the truck in this video are slick factory tires. Maybe you need to consider pilot error with your 2 hours stuck in the mud?
Why Land Rover hasn't figured out that there are great off-road tires of the same size that also ride extremely well on the highway? I'd definitely upgrade if I planned on tackling mud like this. It'd be a whole different beast. :)
because more than half of their customers will never take their car offroad. dealers would probably offer all terrain tyres but at a premium over buying them yourself
the only cars i know of that come packaged from the factory with LIGHT all terrain tyres are base model defenders and base toyota 75-79 series. the top models have highway tyres
people seem to think that just because landrovers are developed to be capable off-roaders, the driver could just turn a knob and stomp on the gas. regardless of how capable a vehicle is, it will go to waste on an unexperienced driver.
love the lr3 and i really, honestly think it's a great car.
fuking SUV ... we took it 2 times off roading and 1 of the back Axel's broke and now we are having real bad problems with the hand break , and now they void my suspension warranty . they sell you an off road vehicle , but if you take it off road they will void the warranty
straight from the dealer, the disco wins over the defender but the defender can be customized so much easier. still cant decide which i would rather have
actually it has a centre diff lock and an optional rear diff lock. land rover does not use limited slip diffs for some reason. they have traction control instead but i don't see why they can't have both
I would like to see an LR3 and Defender go side by side with a stock set-uo and MT Tyres, I think both vehicles are incredible, but the LR3 has lockers stock and excellent articulation, although it is considerably larger. I'm not saying one is better than the other, but I would like to see the same driver drive both and see what does better:)
@LandroverDefender110 A Defender won't get you there as luxurious as a LR3 though, I drive a LR3 as a daily driver because it's so solid in there cold, harsh Canadian Winters, when I want to go through some harsh 4x4 my Lr3 can't handle, I use a 110 Defender. But I'll tell you, my back hurts like crazy after driving the defender..
seems like Disco3 is worth investment. I wonder if Defender might be a bit better for taft off road enviroment. I need to find that kind of challange around.
as far as tires, what do you guys use? everyone always seems to say BFG all terrains are the cats ass, but my work truck has those and it always get stuck.
I traded in a fully equipped Wrangler (lockers and all), for my LR3 and I haven't looked back. I go 4 wheeling just as often and in even rougher places. Is built like a tank, but handles like a sports car.
land rovers are beasts' i dont care what anyone says to pull tha shit they pull with mild offroad tires or maybe even street tire and 20" rims then go wash off and be featured as some rappers pride and joy while sittin next to a lambo. im sorry im really a ford man but rovers got my vote on built tuff
I would disagree with hockeyroks4ever. Land Rovers have earned their reputation over the past 60 something odd years. I don't think Jeep can boast about being the first vehicle that most people in developing countries have ever seen, nor can it claim to be the best when it comes to off-road. I'd like to see a Wrangler with terrain-response, full-time 4WD, or be able to complete the renowned Camel Trophy contest or famed Paris to Dakar rally race. Till then
I would agree with you if you are tight on money, but the lr gives you luxury that jeeps don'e have. The only jeep I would consider would be a wrnagler considering the rest can't do anything off-road.
My old Disco II could whoop this Disco III's arse off-road anyday. And what the bloody hell are you doing using all-season tyres? Get some proper mud/snow tyres mate.
@ropoly

@davyjhones A sad fact is that very few people take their Land Rovers off road and that is probably the reason they come with road tires.
