Elusive- - it's not taught now, but the reality of the South -- to whites - before the Civil War was very Nazi like.
There was no freedom of press in the South. No real elections. No freedom of speech. There were laws against any speech that questioned slavery. There were laws against owning or having any book the state did not want you to own.
For decades ships were searched, US mails were searched, men were whipped and jailed.

Learn what the FULL quotes were -- not the distortions. Learn the CONTEXT of his letters.
