What everybody needs to understand is that there is a 30 foot drop underneath this guy, and its onto jagged rocks, i was just there yesterday checking it out. Attah boy, your the man, someday i wish to be as badass as you
Definately sick man...loved ur presentation at the rock tour in squamish this summer...very inspiring. Did the grand wall the next week. Only 17 but definately wanting to get better...maybe ill run into sometime in the best climbing area in the world "SQUAMISH!!"
Hey matt, love your style ! bring it on. Would be awesome if you could show me some DWS on Squarmish sometime. I just got married in Lake Louise last week, and thinking of moving to Squamish. In the UK at the moment but i ll give you a shout when im over next.
This is not really soloing. True he is climbing without a rope, but he has protection. Why not just use a rope? It's like when you top rope a line and don't pull the slack except to keep you off the ground. It's still top roping, just without a snug rope.
never called it free soloing, just went to experiment and have some fun. not sure who posted this vid but it sure got everyones attention. anybody for Cobra Crack? I think it is possible...
Fucking bad ass...... All tool bag YOU TUBE talkers dont have a clue how scary that root is. I saw Chris sharma fall just after the roof when he was warming up to climb dream cacher Its right next to that climb. Thats a sand bag 13a very hard that fall to the deck would be around 40 feet on big ass rocks. The first shot of him climbing when he steps out and grabs the flake your balls jump up in your ass rope or free solo or net that shit is scary.... great vid.
It's not a "Sandbagged" 13a. Like many of the 13's at Squamish, it's more like a high boulder problem with bolts. There is an intermediate sloper for your left hand at the roof, and THEN to the jug. The climb is then over. It's 13a. Get over it.
Wrong--it tops out. Dave Graham went to the top at the Petzl rock trip. OH and I can tell you're one of those guys that does not send the whole climb, then says that's not that hard. I remember some Frenchy saying as Chris was Red pointing Dream Catcher, Oh that's only around 14a lolol funny how he has the one ascent of Dream Catcher, and all the other 14s in Squamish besides Cobra have been lapped. You might need to get over it. Oh, wait a minute, you've only done part of the climb. lolol.
"The climb is over" as in: there are no more difficulties to be encountered on the 5.10 slab finish to the top after the crux. Jesus, there really is no end of morons with poor reading comprehension skills these days. FYI, it's still 13a with that 5.10 slab finish to the top. Cunt.
Thanks for posting this video of me. Yes the net is tied to trees, rock anchors via cams and even some bolts from nearby sport routes. We used industrial strength bungee cord and a 30 foot salmon fishing net. I've climbed the route before with a rope but never did get it with the net, the crux took you over the rock ledge beside the net and at 5.13 it was too rich for my blood. So what you see in the video is an attempt at a harder sequence that kept us directly over the net.
Very cool idea! Maddaloni is an expert rigger, as you will see from his blog. He has also authored guidebooks on DWS in Thailand, so it's understandable he is experimenting with new ways to climb without a tether.
Sick ..Soloing is the true feeling of climbing

try it and let me know how it feels

Not a problem.

"Why not just use a rope?"
Because that looks FAR more fun.
hunta998 2 years ago
Then if it is "fun," it is the same as using a rope.
r1skate 2 years ago
@r1skate If you know that there is a rope, it wouldn't have the same effect.

Maddaloni is one of the biggest attention whores/rectal pores in the Squamish climbing community.

If you want to solo, then solo...this (net solo) seems far too gear intensive and seems to miss the point and simplicity of soloing or dws

So, did you send?
And, is the net tied to trees?
ktoober 4 years ago
Climbing with a net instead of a rope is NOT soloing. Kinda contrived.
Nice climb though.
snowey101 4 years ago
its similar to deep water soloing. coz with deep water, water catches ur fall. like the net.

That is so wild!
