This was a six year old racehorse clearly in pain and just wouldn't train. It had already hurt three handlers as it just didn't want to come out of its box. Was actually due to be euthanised as dangerous when it was brought to us as a last chance. It tried to bite me and kick Pete Baker the first time we worked on it- a real grump!
It took 9 months but is now used relatively lightly as a cross country hack. Now works well and is really easy to handle.
What, in your opinion, has caused this ´shearing¨? What about resolving the problem of the completely contracted heels so the central sulcus can return to the shape nature intended, instead of the split heels that the contraction has caused and the digital cushion will be of some ´use´ again to the DDFT! And why talk about medication when you make no mention of disease?
Cause unknown, we hadn't seen the horse before but were told it had been a problem for over a year. Until the heels were locked together and given a chance to fuse there was no real prospect of this horse ever recovering. We felt there was possibly damage to the digital cushion and the lateral cartilages. This was not just a frog level issue.
The rear of the heel was weeping up to the coronet level, the medication was a precaution
Try trimming the feet correctly.

Caused by excessive use.
Concussion trauma.
They will sheer at the heel or split at the toe. Especially it the horse was not shod or shod without the use of a heel nail to minimize the flexing.
It will not heal if infection is involved in the crevas.
Make sure the heels of the shoe extend beond the hoof wall to promote heel support .
Trotting or galloping on tarmac is a leading cause in this condition.
Your on the right track in your repair.
Jolly good.

@semtech30 Actually that is all caused by incorrect trimming.

The proof of the pudding is that it worked.
