  • why are they doing that? hahahaha they should get sledge hammers and don't they have machines for this?

  • I think these are all IDP's displaced by the LRA fighting the Uganda government and Refugees from South Sudan. Our mothers like Mama Rose were happy cultivating and doing other good jobs but due to conflicts they falled to this category. May God bring peace to Uganda and bless the seven children of Mama Rose. Amen

  • Our leaders have to pay their attention to this situation where our mothers, sisters and girls remained in breaking rocks so that their children servive and got education. This is also happening in Juba South Sudan. God Bless those who are poor. Amen.

  • Oboi4, do you live in Southern Sudan? I also visited Gulu, Uganda on the Southern Sudan border during my trip.

  • Neddotcom,I live in Southern Sudan. Kideopo Valley.

  • Isn't there something that these women could use to break these rocks easier? Obviously there are electric machines that we use which they cannot, but isn't there something stronger that they can use to break these rocks -it's really heart breaking.

  • Good question magdalena2007. I have a feeling that the answer is those are the cheapest and most available tools.

  • Something needs to be invented and donated to these women so they can still work but make it easier. I'm glad videos like this are out there.

  • Thnx for the kind words about the video. If you check out the Ned web site you can actually meet some of the women from Uganda yourself. One thing we've talked about at Ned is sending over disposable dusk masks to help keep the rock dust out of their lungs.

  • Disposable dust masks -YES!!!!! i'll check out the site

  • @neddotcom I suggest a grinding machine.

  • I only knew the "job" in India!

    Pathetic I agree!

  • Yes they have the breaking rocks Job in India. But they pay ten times more in India. I know several families working breaking rocks, who have a house, kids and have 3 good meals a day.

  • simply parthetic!

  • Yes I saw the same thing in Lusaka, Zambia. If they werent doing this, they would be doing nothing all day long. I saw children doing the same thing. Nearly 20 sacks full stacked separately behind them as they pound away under the trees along side a very busy and dusty road.

  • ah that makes me tink of cabo verde godly being on top of moutain the wind ah makes me want too go

  • Who is the woman translating all the time. Her outfit is a lot nicer, and cleaner than "Rose"'s clothes, and how come this woman weight a lot more than Rose. Is it her boss? Or does she work for some kind of help organisation. I almost don't consider this a job , it's slavery. And Rose has 7 children to take care. There is no justice in this world. This is a very good but yet a very tragic video!

  • Her name is Grace Ayaa (see the neddotcom video called Life in Africa: Grace Ayaa). She is Rose's friend and coworker at Life in Africa a coop based in Uganda that they are both members of. Grace is dressed up to welcome guests at the LiA compound later that evening (see the neddotcom Ululation video)

  • how much would the owners of the quary sell the stone for?

  • excellent question, I'll find out.

  • It's mind-boggling to thing of that as a job. An American would just load the large rocks into a machine to do the crushing -> and that machine would cost more than this woman's wages for the year. Much more. Do we even know what the crushed rocks are for?

  • From my understanding rocks are used for construction, drainage, landscaping, and such. I saw individual vendors selling rocks (large and small) at the side of the roads all around Kampala. One amazing thing to me too, making $.58 a day "sounds" horrifying to westerners, but the truth is find a way to ratchet that up to $2 to $3 a day and life becomes comparatively pleasant...hard as that is to understand.

  • I totally agree, this is very mind boggling!
