@2376bd Háry (the guy): This side of the Tisza [a river], Beyond the Danube [also a river], Beyond the Tisza, there's a horseherd with his herd. His little bay horse is tethered, With a felt tether, without a rug, With his master. Örzse (Lizzy): This side of the Tisza [a river], Beyond the Danube [also a river], Beyond the Tisza, there's a cowherd with his herd. He grazes his herd, and waits for his sweetheart, There on a bed of grass.
@2376bd Háry: This side of the Tisza, beyond the Danube, Beyond the Tisza, there's a shepherd with his herd. There they cook a paprika stew [real tasty], And it with a little fork, with a wooden spoon, From the stew-pot. Together: This side of the Tisza, beyond the Danube, Beyond the Tisza, there's a little hut with a poplar. There my thoughts will always be, My heart is after that, to be there together... [but in hungarian it sounds much nicer than in english]

Itt két olyan mérhetetlen kvalitású ember előadását láthatjuk, hallhatjuk amely olyan tökéletes, és olyan fantasztikus, hogy sajnos én erről az érzésről csak triviális szavakkal tudnék fogalmazni.

I performed this suite 40 years ago as a percussionist. First time I heard lyrics to this and I have listened to many versions of Hary Janos. Magnificent! Bravo!
Uhh, you're hitting soft points but I think, you should know more about theese things before you judge (a whole nation). Although I have to admit it's true.
shut up it is hungarian in hungarz for the hungarians and not for the one who is not getting what is in do not be so ridiculous, it is something for hungarians pls
My comment is only that, that on my 41st birthday (1.June,80) I sang the role of Osmin(Abduction) at the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest. Mr. Melis came back stage to congratulate me after the performance. I was honored to get to know him. Apropos, I've never heard a more beautiful recording of "Di provenza il mar il sol" (La Traviata) as his. The beauty of his voice, diction (unfortunately it was on a 33 LP recording), stays still in my ears. Hopefully he is still with us!
The story is of a veteran hussar in the Austrian army in the first half of the 19th century who sits in the village inn regaling his listeners with fantastic tales of heroism: his supposed exploits include winning the heart of the Empress Marie Louise, the wife of Napoleon, and then single-handedly defeating Napoleon and his armies. Nevertheless, he finally renounces all riches in order to go back to his village with his sweetheart.

This is my conducting teacher, Imre Pallo. He is a phenomenal opera conductor. The role of Hary Janos was written for his father, also named Imre Pallo. Kodaly was his godfather.
Thanks a lot, as an expat, I kindly remember Melis Gyorgy sitting on the beach of the Berettyo river. I loved his Papageno in the Magic Flute, as the only good voice at the time (mid 1960-s) during the opera performance. Beside he was actually PLAYING the role as well. What a delight was, when I have seen him again 40 years later in the Othello as a bass. Crisp as clean as ever! It was great being again in the Budapest Opera.
A moving performance, thank you for sharing!
The sound of the cimbalom is very familiar, we have the yang qin in Chinese traditional music, they sound very similar.

Although I speak no Hungarian, something in the music and singing makes my eyes wets.
Could anyone kindly provide some translation of the singing? Thank you so much in advance! :-)

Hungary has so much to be proud of.Such as this music.Pity about siding with adolf's butchers and gross nationalism
