so many ppl have tried to do this song, bon jovi, jewel, john hiatt e ct. but there is only one voice who gave life to this song and thats the great Joe Cocker. i grew up in the 70's and i can tell you, him, van morrison, the stones, bonnie raitt gave our generation a voice that actually changed things in the world we were living in. only then has music changed and better a generation. im so proud to have witnessed it. Agreed, Joe has one of the best voices in all of music... But let's give credit to the song's writer. John Hiatt's version is simply mesmerizing! It starts out slow, with John clearly singing with ernest passion. As the song build to a climax, Hiatt's voice soars and dips and holds on to notes like no tomorrow. Best of all, his voice projects a feeling of urgency that only love can produce.... He's the real deal my friends!

I agree. To be honest, this version is disappointing me. Hearing Joe Cocker, who did some of the best covers in rock history, flattening down a song like this is saddening.

A truly AMAZING version of this song is done by Chaka Khan. She can spin a song like no one on the planet. It takes on a spiritual quality

Must say not one of the best songs of Joe, I know the original is from John Hiatt. But I know Joe Cocker can do much better :) and the original is much more pure with just the piano :)

I agree. To be honest, this version is disappointing me. Hearing Joe Cocker, who did some of the best covers in rock history, flattening down a song like this is saddening.

Just once in my life I was litteraly moved to tears by music. It was during a life performance of this song by Joe Cocker in the "Ahoy" at Rotterdam. My God, that was really good.
