It's important to understand that there is a difference between trolling, and simply not having a popular view or lack of tact.

Defiling the image of Jesus is not accable to many people, but it is only a belief system; it doesn't imply a threat or desired harm to any individual people. Supporting the KKK or the Nazis is to support the actions of organizations that have been known for violence, for murder. Second, the comment was sarcastic; America is extremely prone to stereotyping, the name Jethro alone is associated heavily with redneck stereotypes.
