It's pretty much perfect as a walking model goes, but it's totally impractical for anything else. No steering at all. He shows his other wind powered models walking down the beach, but he doesn't show them walking off into the water, or people having to go out and steer or turn them. Maybe he needs to make an amphibious model. They're still very cool to watch. :-)
@TheMrBlinx gosh your so clueless, there is an interview video with him demonstrating that they have a tubes that can detect water and cause it to change direction
actually they do have sensors but there all mechanical and/or pnumatical, for example he has a tube hanging down that sucks in air and if it walks into the water it sucks in water causing some kind of mechanical sparkle magic that makes it go into reverse
I had a dream where cities moved like this like the city would be in the middle at the top and they move like this seasonally. Slowely so people can't really feel too much movement. Pretty interesting.

"Animation generated on the base of sculptor Theo Jansen's experimental models. This work's basic model is made with Naskadigital... Thanks to the Prof. Oswaldo Avila (of ?) ArtistaDigital."
But because it can move on it's own makes it a robot, right? A robot doesn't necessarily need electrical power, sensors or a circuit. That's just how we make most robots.
@MissxIzzyxDBC Actually it does have 1 censor. Its just to make sure it doesnt wonder off into the ocean. its a little tube thing that sorta drags and if it sucks in water, the thing moves away.
what is the BIG deal about Theo Jansen? he has ONE mechanism, and it can't even TURN. I bet Leonardo Davinci could and probably DID think of this and either figured out turning on his OWN or abandoned it because it was not easily achieved. Just because Theo Jansen is smarter than the average person does not make him a GENIUS. Some traditional geniuses are just imbalanced as BALLS people who never branched out and DID get good @ one stupid thing.
Theo Jansen is a genius, he invented the second wheel.. No one's saying that he's better than Da Vinci! Da Vinci didn't invent this, if he did, he would've probably wrote it down..
Jansen's mechanism is not an easy thing to think of before it was invented! ;)
Animaris Rhinoceros is different, if that is what you were thinking of. If not, could you show me a video of the fully constructed version (with five front legs)?
imagine if you put one of his wind powered creations on neptune. then it would travel ridiculously fast.

its impressive but not really a new invention its more a copy of real-life walking beings just like a flying plains these are based on birds
there are already shit loads of walking robots with lots of censors for pressure, temperature, distance... look at the robots they send to space
inflamezz7 2 years ago
This isn't a robot. It's windpowered, like all of his work.
It doesn't have any kind of sensors or any kind of electric circuit/
It doesn't use any kind of fuelel, it just moves when it catches even the slightest bit of wind. That's what makes it so amazing.
