Mamma mia! Secondo me, benche' siano famosi, sono sottovalutati.

It's a shame that many will live and die and never get to hear this masterpiece. It isn't even played on indie or college stations. Stagnation is a miracle from start to finish: the gentle acoustic guitars in the beginning, the incredible organ solo, the different vocal deliveries throughout. It just speaks right to your soul. And just think, they were mere lads of 20 when they recorded this! Genius at such a young age...
I KNOOOOOW WHAT I LIIIIIIKE...... AND I LIIIIIIIKE WHAT I KNOOOOW....... GETTING BETTER....... IN YOUR WARDROBE..... STEPPING ONE... BEHIND.... YOUR SHOW.....
This is Genesis' favourite song from Trespass, which is saying a lot because I think this is a masterpiece. Tony's keyboard-solo is absolutely mind-blowing, also because of the energy in the drums. Can't sit still!

And Genesis sang "Let there be song," and we listened; and on the subsequent tracks they made heaven and the angels and made melodic the stories of man, and it was good.

I was reading Lord of the Rings when I first listened to this album. To me, the 2 shall always kind of fit together. The cover is Eowyn and Faramir in the Houses of Healing.
@Anglagard1 not that I don't completely agree and love this assessment, but I just find it funny that this is a top-rated comment: clearly we are not the only two who think that prog and lord of the rings go together (I first read lord of the rings when I was obsessed with Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick; to me they always go hand in hand). greatness.

@sbuassali I actually found some redeeming qualities in Wind and Wuthering as well.... Steampunk? what an ugly word. SOLID liquid is what I call it. Dare I say... Stagnant? Nailed an Idea, even if most dislike the very concept of "Stagnation", despite the fact we live it. If you think this version wanting, listen to some live cuts of it.Then you'll "fish for bitter minnows" in the echo of that mellotron.
The music is wonderful but some of the lyrics are a bit weak especially the "I want a drink" part. Then again, they were 20 years old so forgivable. Like the early use of synth and mellotron on this track.
That's the amazing thing. Genesis were so poetic, lyrically, especially Peter & Tony. They KNOW what they are writing about. Go read the lyrics to "Cinema Show" it's unbelievable the breadth of knowledge these lads have.
@Gruntol5 I beg you to let me know. You mean that the lyrics of the song imply that all but the only man who didn't die fainted from radiation poisoning?
when i hear the part at 0:57, i always envision an eagle taking off from a mountain cliff and gliding on the breeze! :) it's nice to listen to this whole piece with eyes closed - conjures up so many mental images!
despite all the wonderful songs Genesis produced after this - I still keep playing this song - it's for me everyting the Band is about. (Apart from a couple of songs, I lost interest after Peter left - does anyone feel the same ?)
"Trespass" es el segundo álbum grabado por el grupo inglés Genesis. Aún con Anthony Phillips en guitarra, a diferencia del primer disco, los temas son de duración más prolongada. Entre ellos cabe destacar esta joyita: "Stagnation".
Someone start a petition to get the tommygun version back on. I'll sign it. We can also boycott WMG and their subsidiaries hitting them in their pocket always helps.
A great track.probebly the best on tresspass. I wish i lived to see the day. Dont you. They were called the second Beatles and i agree with what they said. Where did you get this anyway? LOVING IT!
Does anyone know why the best Stagnation video (The one that starts out with the Atomic Bomb being dropped) on Youtube was pulled and can someone upload the video file back on?
That version (by Genesis fan "Tommygun") was pulled off YouTube by the dreaded WMG (Warners Music Group), supposedly for "copyright infringement." Tommygun explains elsewhere that he doesn't know why they picked on that one. Damned shame! Stagnation remains one of the most amazing piece of rock music of all time.
Thanks for mentioning. I was looking for that upload about 3 weeks ago and couldn't find it anywhere. Not that any upload of this work of art isn't a great thing in itself.
I hate to read on the net that Trespass is a bad album..It's a brilliant stuff with great songs: Looking for someone, White Mountain, and my personal favourite Stagnation, The Knife..just compare it with 'From Genesis to Revelation' (I love their first album too...but there's their music developed in so many ways between 1968-1970). I wish I could turn back time and sit in the front row on this gig.:)
I think I might know why. Some of this early Genesis music requires a little patience to get to the heavy, hard hitting stuff. This song is a great example. And most people, Americans especially, don't have that patience. Plus i think when people find out its old, from the early 70s, they kind of tune out. Since they've never heard of it before, what could possibly make it so good? But i agree with you, I'm a patient person and i love every bit, every second of this music...nothing else like it!
I could have wrote that comment myself. I agree with you, and the patience is not only in the listener, it's also in the artist. Fast made heavy marketed mainstream music can be good for the ear of the average listener, and drive masses, but thats also the music that you get used to too fast and soon it's history. Songs like this just get better the more patience you have, and the more times you listen it, which in it's nature, is beautiful.
Exactly. And the beginning of most early Genesis songs are not that appealing to the masses, because they somewhat "boring" to the average listener. But just about every song has these hidden gems deep into the song that the average listener will never get to. Ex: the keyboard solo in this song; guitar solo in firth of fifth is 7 min. into the song; Supper's Ready gets legendary almost 13 min. in; 2nd half of Cinema Show; Can Utility; ; i could go on and on. Who wouldnt like this keyboard solo?
i apparently had the patience when i was 12 years old, when i walked four miles in the snow to buy this record. i was just getting into early genesis, and had seen it at the store when i didn't have the money, so when i finally got the seven bucks together i walked down there. i was a strange kid. anyway, to this day, when i hear anything off this album, i think of snow.
wow i agree completely with both of you. I find Genesis as more of an acquired taste. At first I liked them but wasn't the biggest fan. But now I can't get enough of them. There so melodic and exciting to listen to because they don't disappoint.
You are right. My bad, I apologize. I just find it hard to let it go when someone verbally attacks me like that, especially over something like musical tastes. Won't happen again MisterQuebec. I am a nice person i just dont put up with idiots like that. My apoligies.
@SparrowisSexy yes! radio, when cd's came out in the early 80's, "killed" album rock radio, but now we have youtube, addictive though it may be! Anthony Phillips superb song! He SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON STAGE WITH THE BAND at the Rock&roll induction ceremony, and why didn't mike rutherford mention Ant, his friend! maybe he forgot!
A wonderful period for this band. It's quite amazing really to think that this music was coming from a bunch of 20-year-old guys. They just happened to be enormously talented and inventive. Just excellent!
Mamma mia! Secondo me, benche' siano famosi, sono sottovalutati. Peter Gabriel brought the theatrical effect and the class
Phil Collins brought the rhythmic complexity
Tony Banks brought the virtuosity
Steve Hackett brought the progressive world...
Mike Rutherford brought the band
and Anthony Phillips brought the English charm and the pastoral universe that typifies Genesis
Indeed, he brought some of the most important thing that made Genesis look so unique

Steampunk? what an ugly word.
JonasPlanck 2 years ago
The music is wonderful but some of the lyrics are a bit weak especially the "I want a drink" part. Then again, they were 20 years old so forgivable. Like the early use of synth and mellotron on this track.
splicernyc 2 years ago
@splicernyc : "I want to sit down" and "I want a drink."
Fatigue and thirst : two of the symptoms of radiation poisoning. For 20 year olds, they amaze.

@Gruntol5
That's the amazing thing. Genesis were so poetic, lyrically, especially Peter & Tony. They KNOW what they are writing about. Go read the lyrics to "Cinema Show" it's unbelievable the breadth of knowledge these lads have.
BitterBosh 1 year ago 7
@Gruntol5 I beg you to let me know. You mean that the lyrics of the song imply that all but the only man who didn't die fainted from radiation poisoning?
What does the song talk about then?
Where did you got this from?

when i hear the part at 0:57, i always envision an eagle taking off from a mountain cliff and gliding on the breeze! :) it's nice to listen to this whole piece with eyes closed - conjures up so many mental images!

i love this track!! :) very atmospheric! they played chords like nobody else. i love the use of minor 9's, like at 0:57.

despite all the wonderful songs Genesis produced after this - I still keep playing this song - it's for me everyting the Band is about.

Does anyone know why the best Stagnation video (The one that starts out with the Atomic Bomb being dropped) on Youtube was pulled and can someone upload the video file back on?
sm6860 2 years ago 2

Actually, some harps at some places would have been wonderful, especially from 4:33 onwards.

I've been a Genisis fan since the 70s. Love Peter Gabriel and his mystical and ethereal lyrics.
icemelongreen 3 years ago 2
Sounded fantastic in the 70's sounds fantastic today. I agree an under appriciated piece of music that many will never hear.
bitchandwolf 3 years ago 3
Music is rarely so beatiful as to make a hard-hearted cynic like me cry...but this does. I find myself asking 'how is this not known more?'
SparrowisSexy 3 years ago 3
I think I might know why. Some of this early Genesis music requires a little patience to get to the heavy, hard hitting stuff. This song is a great example. And most people, Americans especially, don't have that patience. Plus i think when people find out its old, from the early 70s, they kind of tune out. Since they've never heard of it before, what could possibly make it so good? But i agree with you, I'm a patient person and i love every bit, every second of this music...nothing else like it!
TheCorrectAnswer56 2 years ago 6
I could have wrote that comment myself. I agree with you, and the patience is not only in the listener, it's also in the artist. Fast made heavy marketed mainstream music can be good for the ear of the average listener, and drive masses, but thats also the music that you get used to too fast and soon it's history. Songs like this just get better the more patience you have, and the more times you listen it, which in it's nature, is beautiful.
paragraph7 2 years ago
TheCorrectAnswer56 2 years ago 2
i apparently had the patience when i was 12 years old, when i walked four miles in the snow to buy this record. i was just getting into early genesis, and had seen it at the store when i didn't have the money, so when i finally got the seven bucks together i walked down there. i was a strange kid. anyway, to this day, when i hear anything off this album, i think of snow.

wow i agree completely with both of you. I find Genesis as more of an acquired taste. At first I liked them but wasn't the biggest fan. But now I can't get enough of them. There so melodic and exciting to listen to because they don't disappoint.

Everyone I had to listen the bit between 1:18 and 2:58 with headphones almost fell to sleep. This is the best music piece of its style ever made.

It is one of my favourites in this song too.

A wonderful period for this band. It's quite amazing really to think that this music was coming from a bunch of 20-year-old guys. They just happened to be enormously talented and inventive. Just excellent!

I love that they played the last bit of this song on their 2007 tour during I Know What I Like. One of their best way ahead of their time
