  • Brew temp is too high. Higher the brew temp, the larger the extraction cone.

  • Those beans need some more time to de-gas and you need to tighten up your grind. Flow is way too quick and crema too gassy. This will be a bitter shot.

  • @ocdautomatic Agreed. Learn to tamp. But thats what the naked PF is for. Your brew temp also looks to be a little too high.

  • You're getting what I call "the volcano". The espresso dangles too low from the PF and comes down in a torrent. When this happens with me I need to grind finer, tamp harder, or wait longer after steaming milk to let Ms. Silvia let off some pressure.

  • I use a naked portafilter with my Silvia too. You're getting a bit of what I call "the volcano", which is when the espresso comes out really fast and dangles low from the PF. I'm not saying yours is too fast, but either yours is too fast or mine is too slow. When this happens with mine my coffee tastes bitter and has no crema, but yours appears to have crema. Hmm.

    I get this mostly if I've left the steamer switch on, or of course if my grind is too coarse or I didn't tamp hard enough.

  • It's a TRIPLE, so the basket is longer, and so the floor is lower, and since more crema extracts in the same diamter, the pour hangs lower, so this is the same shape pour you're talking about, but not actually a problem here.

  • Good point. And I've definitely been re-evaluating how fast my pours are. I go for more of a "volcano shape" than I used to, even with doubles.

  • It just means you have more total dissovled solids, which is kind of the point of espresso. However, you want a +-25sec time, and no blonding, but between those factors, more is better.

  • Hey man, that was a great shot, it came out very even. Also, would i be correct in assuming that your coffee was rather fresh, judging by the size of the cone? And what method did you use, because that looked like a beautiful shot?

  • you can do triple when you have a naked portafilter. otherwise it doesn't fit. most naked manufacturers throw in a triple basket as part of the deal.  chriscoffee (.) com.
