Thanks so much for uploading these. RD is hands down my favorite tv program ever. You are right about our American comedy being different than your English variety. I'd hesitate to use the word "better", but there certainly is a different flavor to it. I would go out on a limb and say that even our comedy of the time period was funnier than today's stuff. The whole cast of RD was pure genius, though. The chemistry was some of the best I've ever seen. Thanks again.
Isnt it wonderful that though Leonard Rossiter and Richard Beckinsale are both long dead now, we can still sit and watch them. I know that that might seem silly to say or perhaps even overly sentimental. But it really dose seem that telly programs today are so Americanized with their, laugh here, be sad here etc format. No offence to our Yank cousins, but their programs have always been packaged crap. And particularly soulless crap at that. :o)o:
@crockyoshighty I agree i mean at least our comedy is still moderately funnier than the American's but it's still not as funny as it used to be. I guess comedy back then was directed more towards adults but these days there's such a wide genre to entertain so it's hard to find the right balance.
I have been swapping videos with Americans where they copied OUR sitcoms or they copied OURS. I like the way they did Man About The House as "Three's Company."
@RisingDampChamp as a "Yank" I am sad to say I agree how awful our comedies are compared to these classics! You know how good they are when you can watch them over and over and they don't get old. How often can you do that with most, or any American shows. I can't stand "Friends" (A Coupling rip-off) or many others. In fact, if you ever have seen Sanford and Son, you can see another rip off from Steptoe and Son...Ironic, isn't it? :(
I disagree. Their "culture" is different, so their comedy will produced different too. Personally, I like the way the Americans did Man About The House as "Three's Company."
And do you remember "Two's Company" with a Brit (Donald Sinden), and a yank (Elaine Stritch)?
@TheDiamond909 Whacha TheDiamond909 and ta for the comment. I had to read what I had written before replying to you it being 9 months ago and all and while doing so couldn't help listening to dear old Leonard prattling on to Miss Jones which inturn had me creasing up all over again. :o)o:
"That's not the point, you're giving this place a bad name, I've got my position to think of."
They sample that at the end of the Chumbawamba song Amnesia, I didn't know it came from Rising Damp before.
RisingDampChamp, thank you so much for uploading these! They hardly ever show them on TV any more, aren't available on most download sites and I haven't got the DVD set. You rock!
