Greg is a great musician and guitar player, Many people think if they see someone shred, then thats all they can do which is usually the opposite. Everyone I've met at my school can play fast, It's not hard to do at all, the only ones who knock it are the ones who cannot do it at all because they never put the time into it. Playing fast is great for certain parts, or even building up a solo, have you ever listened to classical music? baroque? even jazz has some fast buildups!
i agree with everything you said until you started talking about Greg's ability. Greg is most likely only using 2 effects and maybe a 3rd (Distortion, wah, and possibly a compressor) if he were playing during the 80's i'm sure his style would have been different and he would be far above average. You can tell he is Dimebag influenced. He is far from posing and his technique is monstrous. This is a video of him goofing around, not playing music.
i fucking hate all the guys who they think they´re better cuz they can play something some other cant or they want to demostrate their "theorical knowledge or whatever triying to show they´re more musicians, so they come doing comments like "ohhh thats easy, can he play jazz or whatever hard technical shit" fuck off man! Enjoy it the music!
@MetalyourMom That statement literally made no sense. I think you need to learn the english language before you post. "Theorical" is not a word, just FYI.
Man this guy is great, i knew he had dimebag influences just when i saw his legato style and the gear hes using like the bill lawrence and krank amps, im pretty sure hes just having fun in this video. i get to listen to his original themes!
Who said shred sux? That's not cool ha, Shred kills Jazz and Blues put together, I don't care if metal came from both genres, Metal makes guitar playing sound badass, Check out Jeff Loomis, Paul Gilbert, and Chris Brodrick. Shredding!
Just bought his shred book. Pretty good, functional stuff that actually makes you faster all round rather than masses of exercises that just make you fast at that exercise.
I also go to MI...The best part about Greg isn't even his playing. He's just an all around KILLER dude. One of the most interesting people i've ever met. He is a monster player too don't get me wrong. But what a cool cat.
@longlostlizard haha, believe me, greg is a fucking genius, there is no man more dedicated to his guitar than he. If anyone could play a smooth jazz solo, it would be him. and you have to look at this video from his prospective, he's doing a metal clinic surrounded by people just wanting to be impressed, and it is quite impressive.
P.S. he's a teacher at MI and knows theory out the butt, and MI is a great school if you are looking for a strong, in depth, education in theory
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i'm not saying i'm better than him at all. but its most DEFINITELY not anything to brag about. who cares if he can shred? i want him to play one jazz song, which he probably can't do
That is the dumbest thing i've heard in awhile. Your idea of jazz is probably playing a ii-V7-I turn around. well, if you ever decide to go ahead and dive into the advanced theory of it i can gaurantee you will be greatly humbled
@longlostlizard Whoa dude, that's a stretch. I think this guy is SICK and I have HUGE respect for him, but don't say that Jazz is remedial, you know nothing of Jazz if you are saying that. I'm not trying to start a fight I'm just saying have a little respect for people who play jazz, that stuff is not easy when you get into the good stuff. It's like saying rock music is easy just because you can shred the pentatonic box.
@longlostlizard Ok man, I'm not gonna stoop so low as to diss this guy, because God damn I love Dimebag and balls to the wall shredding, and this guy has talent. But jazz is remedial music? Are you fucking stupid? haha
Sorry man, i love shred but your comment is ignorant. Shred requires excellent coordination and a pretty basic understanding of theory. Jazz is far more cerebral and in many cases can require shred-like chops as well as a titanic grasp of musical theory. Metal is my first love, and it's easier to put in the time to build your chops to shred levels than it is to be able to get a functional understanding of jazz and how to play it. Metal is my first love, but jazz is great.
jazz is hardly remedial music. You might have been able to play some jazzy sounding stuff at 12, but I doubt it was anything truly great. Real jazz if far more complex than anything I've heard in metal in years. a lot if it may not be as technical as this. Jazz requires a much more in depth knowledge of music to do it right.
@scribbydibbydoo Greg is actually a trained musician who can play anything. I have him as a private instructor and at the moment me and him are working on Blue Bossa and Autumn Leaves. He has helped me with numerous chord progressions and arppegiated sequences that have absolutely nothing to do with metal or shred. Oh, and I am not a shredder. It's just the style of music he likes to play, but he is also one hell of a guitar player, not just shredder.
gee wiz, another guitar solo... swell
