$300 isn't that much to spend on a game like this. Aside from that, there are those of us who just can't get out to a card shop to play due to whatever reason we have. Some may not have a local shop, some may have no friends who play and in rarer cases some may be unable to leave home because of medical issues. MTGO is great for that. I popped maybe $50 on the game and got several decks worth of stuff doing it, one of which might I add I win with 80% of the time in casual.
Magic Online is great for peaple who want to play the game but are restricted by where they live. For example i live in a country where these types of games are not popular and there is only one card shop in the whole country which i dont live near to so I by play Magic online where i can expiriance and enjoy the game although i cant get the paper cards.
i think there is some 3rd party programers that re-creates the game, except its free, but there is 2 faults, 1st is that there is a honor system, everything you do is manual.. like drawing cards, sending cards to graveyard, and etc. and 2nd you automatically get all the cards, so that isn't very fun. and community is very small, its only for hardcore players and its mostly likely treated as simulator.
I am not sure how cheap cars are too run in America but $300 is not going too get you anywhere with a car in England look at the running cost of a car before you compare them too the cost of playing a card game. I do agree that these card games can be expensive but most lesure activities are.
you assume a lot in this video. I work in a factory 40 to 48 hours plus a week. Ok so not all of us work at burger king. Second off i also attend school and wrap up my four year degree in August. I play these games a lot man. My bills are paid and my wife doesn't mind. Now im only 20 but i know other guys who play that are a lot older. Whats the difference in someone paying a ton of money for sports tickets? Everyone has hobbies dont trash something based on only a couple of people
I prefer pen and paper magic I really don't like the online game. Just because I like to go to the card shop, meet people socialize. We pick up pizza play pick up games. I just don't get the same satisfaction playing the online game. The only upside to the online game is that you can play anytime. Though I don't know anybody that drops $110 for a box hoping for Jace. Most people just go out and drop $90 - $100 for Jace. Because everyone at our shop 18+ and has jobs.
I used to spend tons of money on Magic, but when it comes to this online version (which I would love to play), I just cannot get myself to pay the same amount of money, which is why I never got into it - sadly :/
Stuff like original black border Strip Mine is a no brainer. Best kept secret of MTG are the cheaper cards, some of which are staples in original black border, that people like 'pimping' their deck with. Chain Lightning was not reprinted but when it was just recently it is still a nice original card to own. Fork, after Reverberate which is worth like.. $1.. still sees play from collectors who just wanna play with Fork. And thinks its old school. Its not treated like a collectible, take advantage
Magic The Gathering the paper game? I bought Gate To Phyrexia playset those are really cheap now. ITs from a set that had a card leap frog from $30-$250 basically overnight. Its one of the weaker but rarest sets. Gate imo is a great buy. Another great buy is Su-Chi it is a 4/4 that yields mana when it enters the graveyard and pays for its own cost. Cards like that are obviously powerful but are underplayed. On occasion they've been in 'big decks'. In The Eye Of Chaos is another example
You are really wrong about MTGO. The reserved list does not affect online prices and reprints. People will tell you Force Of Will is a sick card. Trust me.. Spell Pierce and some of the newer counterspells, are extremely effective soft counters. Arcane Denial.. if you're a pro you understand that a lot of the time in a deck built around a card like that you see the card advantage it really brings you. Sometimes your opponent gaining cards is what you want to do. Budget decks are there too
I bought the $10 starterpack of MTGO yesterday to try it out. I just uninstalled it when finding it cost $15 to do a booster draft.
I pay $9 to play in a booster draft at the local shop, I get real cards that I can use to play with friends casually and get to collect the cards afterward.
The game/cards are already devoloped, it can't take a large team or funding to make the online game.
*continue* We all spend needless money on entertainment, even paying $30 for a pizza that you could make for $5 is needless spending of money. People even buy beds for $6,000 instead of saving that cash for better things. I just decide to waste my money on hobbies that get me meeting new people, instead of on other hobbies that don't. Trading card games are just hobbies, and if some dude would rather buy $300 in cards over owning a Xbox 360 or PS3, that's his choice.
So me spending $100 of my pay check for some cards so I can go out and compete in events, win items worth cash, hang out with friends, make new friends, and travel to new places to play with people I other wise would never have known existed is stupid in your opinion. Yet I bet you have a $2,000 computer, a $2,000 tv, $1000+ in movies and video games, not to mention all the money you spent on your entertainment system, for hobbies that encourage you to stay inside and have no life. *continued*

Personally I loved card games,to the point of 10th anniversary, but then I started noticing the real flaw ofof Magic cardgame. The thing is that with each of new generations thecards were getting cheaper and cheaper, the abilities stronger and stronger, for money
when i buy magic cards i make a list, i build my deck and use mmy list to improve my deck and im set for several years. every few years i update my cards and iim good to go for several more years. when i want non casual play i run for draft every 5 or 6 months. I don't randomly spend on shit that isnt on my list and just the few decks i have are perfectly good at keeping me entertained for years with far less spending.
You rant about magic online costing money, what about the good number of people who go infinite online? Or the people willing to play the market on paper cards and also play that for free or near free? It's really not that hard, and it give you entertainment that pays for itself. Also, as others have mentioned, even if you don't, a few hundred dollars isn't a big deal, eventually you get past being 16 years old where it is and hit your early/mid twenties where it becomes an easy amount.
Actually, in WoW you keep paying, $15 every month, whether you progress or not. MTGO has no subscription, $70 is not even a whole year's subscription to WoW or Aion or any major MMO. I bought $50 worth of MTGO cards 4 years ago, played for two years, left for two years and came back, they were still there, the game was still free to access, and fun as ever.
Like another poster said, $50 or even $300 bucks is not unreasonable for a working adult to spend on entertainment.
I don't spend money on MTGO, I make it. You know how many people come ahead chaining limited events on MTGO? It's endless, free entertainment, and nothing you say in this video can convince me otherwise.
One of the reasons people spend a lot on Magic Online is because you can find a game online any second of any day. In real life, it is a bit difficult especially if you only have a few friends who play.
It's a hobby if you dont like it then don't collect them. I use to play alot of videogames that hobby costs more than any TCG. As long as you dont go insane and buy like a hundred boosters or something.
Well the tournement tickets are a dollar each but the booster packs are ridiculous, theyre priced the same as physical boosters! I just paid the initial 10$ cause i dont have an xbox to play the videogame version, and this is as close as i can get.
The issue is being able to maintain control of your hobby. Any hobby is pricey. my fiancée and I play MTG in real life casually. We have casual decks and maybe spend about £20 on cards every 2-3 months. (we have about 1500 cards between us and sell any uber-rares we get)
as long as you can put things in perspective and choose a loaf of bread over a booster pack if the need comes (cliché but you get the idea) then playing CCG's IRL is fine. I agree about MTGO - waste of money.
I recently got into the physical game, thanks to some friends, and play with them each Thursday evening. I personally do not want to play the online game since I enjoy owning the cards and I am able to play with several people I know, buy the cards locally and go to some small social tournaments in my town. This isn't the same for everyone though, and the online game allows easy access to the cards, others to play with and to avoid social interactions since some people prefer a computers safety.
Collecting trading cards is hobby I used to have a few years ago. It only lasted 3 years until I realized such gambling was not worth isolation from my life skills and family which benefit my life more than pieces of shiny paper.
yah but im pretty shure for magic online you pay 10 dollers one time, and get a butt load of cards...soo yah u cant really say that your spending 70 dollarsfor a deck and stuff. so yah, your are wrong
@NNINJAKIWII Like I said in the video, in order to play competitively and take advantage of the fullest extent that this game has, it will cost much more than just the initial starter deck.
lol metal raiders i remember when every kid wanted a exodia or a gate gaurdian lol great tradebait for a useful card
but the ds and gba yugioh games are actually decent thought apparrently yugioh is coming to xbla and you can earn boosters or pay so i see alot of money wasted there
Wow you know people who spends money on unopen boxes. My room mate does it a lot (I mean A LOT), I just prefer getting a video game copy to play on my own. Or play munchkin ^_^
$40-50, or $300 is not a significant amount to spend on entertainment unless you're living off an allowance from your parents. Most adults spend $100 just on dinner and a movie and receive far less entertainment bang for the buck than what a $100 TCG deck brings.
Also, why do you think having a physical card is so amazing? Does it do dishes? Or the laundry? No. It's a paper card that degrades and forces you to subject yourself to legions of nerds in a card shop in order to see any use. Notnx
@weyoung $300 is extremely significant to the average middle and lower/middle class person and I will argue against that most adults will spend $100 bucks on dinner and a movie. Dinner and a movie is much less.
The paper card lends itself to a more deeper game as a lot of CCG's lend themselves well to mind games where you must read your opponent. It also allows you to be social and if you play CCG's, you'll probably fit right in with the rest of the nerds unless your an elitist.
@neverchris I definately agree. Even when purchasing from my list of cards to improve one of my already established decks (4 decks i update every few years) i find it VERY difficult to spend up to $100 let alone $300. $75 tops on a complete deck when I REALLY want a new deck is normal for me because most of it is composed of chep but still damn good cards for my local area with the most expense coming from the 2 or 3 expensive cards. I just don't see dumping more than $100 on a card/cards.
Also I would like to agree with you, magic the gathering is a trading card game. If you want to waste $300 on the game, just spend them on real cards, don't get into the online game. Every town has a card shop you can compete at if you just look them up, the online version of this game however is a huge rip off in my opinion.
@PuppetMasterIX well, the first seasons of the Yu-Gi-Oh show weren't that bad. But when it got into GX and 5 D's, thats when it started to get really outrageous. Tch, playing a card game while risking your life on a bike, no thanks man.
Yu-Gi-Oh was the shit :D I used to play that when I was like ten. I owned the playground! Me and my Red Eyes Black Dragon kicked everyone's ass! I used to have those things that go on your arm, too lol. But I wasn't obsessed with it like some people I know. I would buy a new deck here and there every few months for about 10 bucks, and I've only bought 1 tin and about 10 or 15 booster packs. I had at least 200 cards lol.
I remember when I used to buy Pokemon cards around the early 00's. 2005 was pretty much the point I started to stop buying them since the whole PKMN (along with Y-G-O) card crazy was over where I live.
Apparently, this one holographic Mewtwo card is suppose to be rare, correct? Probably wrong.
I like the pokemon tcg and i'm 17 lol. Pokemons not very expensive at all for me because everyone used to play it and they don't mind selling their old collections for like 5 bucks ^^
I absolutely LOVE Magic, but I am not like dropping 300$ on decks. Me and my friend just drop 30-50 every 3 months to get the theme decks from every set and occasionally boosters to draft.
Well with virtual cards, you don't need to be concerned with cards being damaged, stolen ect. But I think the real seller with M:TG Online is always being able to find someone to play against. In my local area I could count the number of people who play the game on one hand.
If you love the card game, but have nobody to play it with, you really have to play online... though duels of the plainswalkers on the 360 is a pretty good deal.
I used to love Magic in my early to late teens. The obsession died off when fewer and fewer friends were playing it and I didn't feel like like driving to the mall or tournaments just to play a casual game. That and the money pit aspect of it was getting insane. Still good times while it lasted.
I play YuGiOh. Technically. I haven't actually played in months. I'd never save up for a car, I get carsick. There's no use in buying boxes of cards, buying singles will save money. I'd only buy if it's for my deck, I never collect cards. I use what I buy. I do go to tournaments, but that's because they're the only players I can find near me in Ireland, I prefer playing for fun.
Here's what I think about all that you've said: any hobby is acceptable, when it's done in moderation.
Any time you become consumed with pursuing any one kind of non-athletic entertainment or gaming, you're a nerd and you're getting into "dangerous" territory. I've cut back immensely on my gaming over the past few years and I'm to the point where if I play continuously for more than 2 hours, I feel disgusted with myself or like I'm wasting the day.
i played magic from the start the alpha series i had all the rares but after a while you really notice that damn im spending alot of money on this game sold my complete set for 3k but i must wasted around 6k+ on it. was a fun game. I play on my 360 to reminisce
I play Magic on the 360, mostly because me and some friends used to be really big on it and the scene here died off. Good time waster but I won't shell out hundreds on it.
I am a Magic gamer and I have yu-gi-oh card just for collection (i dont play with them anymore) I dont like Magic Online i prefer to face my oponents face-to-face just to see the tears when i put a good card in game :D
@neverchris I played Duel Masters for awhile until I realized that nobody else played it but I will say it was pretty cool with some nice monsters and an easy way to play.
@neverchris I actually really enjoyed it, was very Yu-Gi inspired but because it was made by the same guys as Magic it played alot more like that.
It obviously didn't catch on and I only played it for like 4 months but I really dont remember ever losing a game and most of my friends who were into card games had it.
I remember back in primary school (middle school for you assuming your american) When me and my friends use to play Yu gi oh during lunch breaks and we used to trade cards. Good times.
man i know what you mean. online card games are bs. i was playing yugioh online for a few days till they told me i had to paid every time i wanted to play a game...yeah no thx ill stick to the real thing
I loved Magic: The Gathering. I tried Yu-Gi-Oh! But I couldn't get into it. Luckily I had a store I could go to, and find each specific card that I wanted in my deck... 5 cents for commons, 10 cents for uncommons, and a set price on specific rares. But that was years ago. Good stuff, I still like Magic, and probably always will. (the actual card game)

I prefer playing in stores, but here are two good reasons to play online:
#1 Freedom to relax. You can sit around in your boxers and t-shirt, smoke a bong, and put on some music.
#2 People, the worst of which include cheaters, kids, and the socially inept.

Also, why do you think having a physical card is so amazing? Does it do dishes? Or the laundry? No. It's a paper card that degrades and forces you to subject yourself to legions of nerds in a card shop in order to see any use. Notnx
weyoung 1 year ago 4

Pitraptor 1 year ago
Also I would like to agree with you, magic the gathering is a trading card game. If you want to waste $300 on the game, just spend them on real cards, don't get into the online game. Every town has a card shop you can compete at if you just look them up, the online version of this game however is a huge rip off in my opinion.

I liked the Yu-Gi-Oh card game, but its marketing and TV series were TERRIBLE.
PuppetMasterIX 1 year ago 2
@PuppetMasterIX well, the first seasons of the Yu-Gi-Oh show weren't that bad. But when it got into GX and 5 D's, thats when it started to get really outrageous. Tch, playing a card game while risking your life on a bike, no thanks man.
GamerX89X 1 year ago

JLCL01 1 year ago
I like the pokemon tcg and i'm 17 lol. Pokemons not very expensive at all for me because everyone used to play it and they don't mind selling their old collections for like 5 bucks ^^

I absolutely LOVE Magic, but I am not like dropping 300$ on decks. Me and my friend just drop 30-50 every 3 months to get the theme decks from every set and occasionally boosters to draft.
And we have FUN.

Well with virtual cards, you don't need to be concerned with cards being damaged, stolen ect. But I think the real seller with M:TG Online is always being able to find someone to play against. In my local area I could count the number of people who play the game on one hand.

If you love the card game, but have nobody to play it with, you really have to play online... though duels of the plainswalkers on the 360 is a pretty good deal.
hagridandfang 1 year ago
I used to love Magic in my early to late teens. The obsession died off when fewer and fewer friends were playing it and I didn't feel like like driving to the mall or tournaments just to play a casual game. That and the money pit aspect of it was getting insane. Still good times while it lasted.
ThaduisMallowmare 1 year ago

Also all those card games that are out now can thank Magic the gathering they started the whole card game craze

i played magic from the start the alpha series i had all the rares but after a while you really notice that damn im spending alot of money on this game sold my complete set for 3k but i must wasted around 6k+ on it. was a fun game. I play on my 360 to reminisce
Torxan 1 year ago
I play Magic on the 360, mostly because me and some friends used to be really big on it and the scene here died off. Good time waster but I won't shell out hundreds on it.

Personally.... I prefer Magic over something like Yugioh or Pokemon. I used to play magic with my brothers and their friends a lot. Great rant,

Call me superficial, but I've never been able to get into Yu-Gi-Oh because the art is just too fugly.

At least the Yu-Gi-Oh games let you unlock all of the cards and trade for them or whatever.

@64films The DS games are great although they all seem to miss random older cards that would be useful.

I used to love Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh and even Duel Masters. God damn I was a wiz at them.

@MatthiusSama How was Duel Masters? I read through the instruction manual once out of boredom but never actually tried.
neverchris 1 year ago
@neverchris Quite fun for awhile but get's pretty boring
madboy5566 1 year ago
@neverchris I played Duel Masters for awhile until I realized that nobody else played it but I will say it was pretty cool with some nice monsters and an easy way to play.
Believe me my mom used to play me in that game
roronoablade 1 year ago
@neverchris I actually really enjoyed it, was very Yu-Gi inspired but because it was made by the same guys as Magic it played alot more like that.
It obviously didn't catch on and I only played it for like 4 months but I really dont remember ever losing a game and most of my friends who were into card games had it.
MatthiusSama 1 year ago
I remember back in primary school (middle school for you assuming your american) When me and my friends use to play Yu gi oh during lunch breaks and we used to trade cards. Good times.

Never actually heard of this card game.
