ya know i hate this competition because it just comes down to tricks and twirls. i hear some really good grove beats here but no one cares because all they wanna see it who can throw the sticks around the most
question for drummers, like at 1:18 when these guys go crazy fast in solos, are they still keeping on the same tempo as the beat or are they speeding up and slowing down the tempo alot as they wish?
@yehboyjor88 To answer the question you had about tempo; If you try to listen and sorta count you can figure out that he acctually keeps the same tempo, he just plays faster. Instead of 4ths he can play 8ths or 16ths. You can always make what you're playing sound offbeat with different rythms. In a bad you definately want to be done with your solo before the band keeps playing the song, as you might have figured out. Hope this helped ^^
@yehboyjor88 Yeah, we tend to stay in the tempo we started the ''fast solo'' with, I try to get a little more complicated and cut down the tempo and find a way to drop into a 7/4 time signtature or a 5/4.
@yehboyjor88 copy and paste this and it may help answer your question......Jojo Mayer explaining and demonstrating polyrhythms [drumclinic 2011] in HD
@yehboyjor88 Well,it's supposed to be the same tempo. But i think you're right some of the guys performing on here can be a little 'rubato' with the fast chops. The real pro drummers, for example Tony Royster Jnr, Jojo Mayer, Aaron Spears, Benny Greb etc would make the stuff these guys do look like child's play. However,i admire both styles. The Tony Royster's and Benny Greb's of this world for being superhuman drummers/musicians and the Clyde Frasier's and Isaisas Gil's for being downright badass
this whole thing is full of gimmicks? how can be say it isnt, only reason people are saying it was more musical is because it had jazz and brushes at the start, this things full of tricks, then again, these are drum solos, its part of it, its not about playing to a song or anything
Just took time to stop through and look at the comments and I'm not saying this Cause ur my bro but....U SHOULDA WON. This was by far the most musical performance of those posted of the years competitors. I mean C'mon people It's a drumoff not a stick spinoff!!!
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WAY THAT THE GUY WHO WON COULD PLAY LIKE THIS. This is unmitigated tastefulness. If this solo were a meal, it would be filet mignon and starfruit, with some Don Perignon.
Easily the most impressive solo out of all in 2010.
Gosh, such an awesome solo. Seems more talented than Isaias, but he may not have received as many points on showmanship- not quite as lively as Isaias, the audience thing at the end most probably couldn't hear, and it looked like he almost dropped his stick during the solo. Maybe that counted against him. He was probably the best drummer though.
You should have been the winner of that competition man you really deserved. Your performance really inspired me to go to this year's competition but I know I wouldn't go as far as you did or Chris Coleman lol.
I AM PROUD TO SAY THT THIS MAN RITE HERE IS MY DRUM INSTRUCTOR !!!!!!!! TAUGHT ME EVERYTHING I KNW ABOUT DRUMS AND IM VERY PROUD OF HIM... HE SHUDDA WON BT HEY, U NEVA KNW WAT GOD HAS IN STORE 4 HIM ! KEEP UP DA GOOD WORK FRAZIER ! I LUV U MAN !!!!!
The more I watch this video the more I believe Clyde maybe the best drummer from the last 5 yrs. Flood being the only viable threat. But if Flood and Clyde came to a audition I was judge. it would be Clyde hands down. He is a veteran. He didn't cop out by using everybody else's material. To many of the Galaxy's very best drummers get eat up by all the idiot judges who can't spot a tour ready drummer right in their faces. WHATS UP WITH THE JUDGES.
Holy crap... Just watched this after watching all the others -- you were ROBBED! This was dang close to flawless -- beautiful and musical. Bless you man, and keep it up -- you deserve the success that WILL come!
I just don't understand how the judges can't tell the difference between a seasond drummer and a kid who learned some patterns mostly material seen by all, Is this really a kid contest. Hey GC contest there are several bad ass muther fuckers out there in the Galaxy that ain't early 20's or younger working hard hoping for a career opportunity also. The kind that go to big auditions and nail it. You can't tell at least a guy in his 30's and seasond can't compete with these KIDS. Whats up?
Man, you should've won. You have the skills that Isaias don't have- or at least show during this performance. The only thing i would've done differently, is I would've played a faster groove like the one that you did @ 2: 37 closer to the beginning of the performance. You want to start fast & get the people dancing first, THEN slow down & play something slower. Man, you did a great job!!!
@autodidactbreather and i think that's what it should be not some charade. sure you gotta please the crowd but seriously some of the crap they do in this competition is just rediculous stick flipping techniques now i think that's cool but damn it's just a charade now a-days
This guy was a clear cut winner this year... Don't know whats wrong w/ the judges...!!! He blazed in soooo many different genres... Probably one of the most versatile performances I've seen in awhile. And his showmanship was all brand new "to the competition"... Dude is bad ass...
The only reason you didn't win this competition is that your solo was too musical. The winners of the GC drum off just need to show off gimmicky techniques and flashy tricks to win. Your solo is hands down the most tasteful thing I've seen in the recent competitions. Thank you.
@Contradouchion You're speaking the truth. This guy has a strong musical taste. The guy who ended up winning was some kinda boy band pre teen marketing ploy.
@Contradouchion indeed they like silly face's and a bunch silly spinnin stick stuff im not sure why. this nigga shows off with taste and musicality not just trying to be face
You were by far the most tour ready drummer in the contest. Well rounded. You hide your marching band roots well. Usually can spot those guys a mile away. I also believe you learn the smoking stuff and develope your own material, not the stuff everyone else does. Use rudiments to make music. Not to demonstrait a pattern. I don't think GC understand there are professional drummers in this contest who could play for the biggest names in the industry. The pattern geeks keep winning though!
@badmotorscooter1000 I dnt know about hiding "marching band" roots... The whole hi hat solo in the 6/8 sections was a snare solo we made up in 2005 at South Carolina State University (The Marching 101)... I don't know why people constitute CHOPS with MARCHING BAND... Some of the hardest percussive music is in CONCERT/SYMPHONIC BAND... But preciate it...
Not bad at all Clyde but don't it bother you that Isaias came in with a formula of cheesy material and got the nod. Thats my complaint about this contest, everyone is talented but some guys have figured out that there is a formula to this thing. Glad to see you didn't sell out and even do a latin beat just to cover your bases. Good luck and hope to see you this year.
@badmotorscooter1000 Nah, it doesnt bother me. My goal was to make it there (Finals)... That was bare minimum for me... Ofcourse winning was on my mind, but there are some things at Finals that are super different than any other round... And I did go Latin (Afro Cuban)... Politics are in everything, but out of sight, out of mind... This video is contributing to my career... We'll see how next year pans out... Preciate it doc.
This dude should've won. He played more styles, better transitions, and brought more to the table than the rest of the competition... Guitar Center judges are slack...
Haha yeah I don't know how Isaias Gil beat Anthony Burns (beaded dreads) and Clyde Frasier. Either Anthony Burns or Clyde should've won, but Clyde did drop his stick, though.
This is the winner in my opinion. He had my attention the whole time. I like that he used different groves and played in a nice chop for each. That is versatility
@FVDrums- Preciate that sir... U retarded... We'll have to do a Satterfield/FreeVerse show together...
@ EVERYONE ELSE- I appreciate the comments... All in All, I(cuz I cant speak for the other contestants) had a great time there. I went there 2 network, and spread my gift. Mind was set that if I didnt win, then I atleast wanted to do well enuff to get alot of notariety/publicity... Alot of work came from this. Preciate the words of wisdom, keeps me humbled...!!!
Its great that South Carolina, and more specifically "Orangeburg, SC" has now gained some notoriety in a nationally recognized event. There's definitely more light that will be shed on this "diamond in the rough" of the music industry. Clyde, you killed it man!!! See you in Brazil!! LOL
I dont think race has anything to do with who won. What makes you good on the drums is practice. Just saying that race has anything to do with it doesnt hold up.
I dont understand why this cat didnt win though. I know who was on the judges panel but I still dont get it. He used brushes, he swung, had some great licks, looked in control, had a great groove, had the crowd into what he was doing......
Hopefully the right people hear of this guy and he gets a great gig. He inspired me.
@neilxpeart Yea I plan on it, unless my music career wont allow me to... It was a fun competition. The prizes, the network, paid vacation ect ect. Finals were TOTALLY different, but I can say if I make it back I'll be more prepared for the things that will hinder your performance...
I'm so confused why he didn't win. Just feels like these drum offs are now just based on how flashy a drummer can play. Not the feel and groove the drummer provides. Pity
@Leheno- Yea the tech barely put the cowbell on for me. I guess he didnt screw it on tight enuff. When it fell off, it was hooked over my foot for a lil bit... LOL Had to play thru it tho...
@SpaCityThe judges were all well accomplished drummers... Kenny Arnoff, Dave Elitch, Keith Harris, Taylor Hawkins, Rich Latham, Trevor Lawrence Jr, Tony Royster Jr, Jason Sutter, John Tempesta, and Atom Willard....
I'm trying to figure out why Clyde didn't win. He showed more creativity, emotion, dynamics, and better groove than anyone there - including the winner. Anyone know who the judges were?
@Muzikmaker77 its been black guys since 07 drum off ....they had to let another race win so they dont look like they just vote for black guys...but clyde did kill gil
The 4-3-2-1 was a warm-up I came up w/ to show 2 of my friends different hand/foot passages. It just so happens that if you play a 5pc kit and play 4321, it evenly takes up 64 (16th Notes) which evenly divides into 4 measures w/ the crash ending on beat 1 of next measure. Pretty dope. I shocked myself when I was just playing it... lolol
Uhhhh Geez they spelled my name wrong... Clyde Frazier III... Great footage tho... Preciate everone's comments. I might need 2 be a stunt double for all these famous names ppl throwing out (Mike Tomlin, Cedric The Entertainer, Randy Jackson) Sheesh smh LOL... And my snare is not a 13x8 Pearl Master's Series... Its a Limited Edition 13x9 Pearl Anniversary African Mahogany Wood Snare. Evans HD Dry on the batter side... All the contestants did a heck of a great job...Had a BLAST there...

RAW. shoulda won
dothefoti9 11 months ago
Usually I agree with who wins, but not this year. Gil is good, but this guy blows him out of the water. I don't understand how he didn't win.
idrumfofun1100 11 months ago
@idrumfofun1100 he dropped a stick... thats all it took im guessin
ZebraBear88 11 months ago
@ZebraBear88 If it's anything like I&E, recovery is worth just about as many points as not dropping it at all.
idrumfofun1100 11 months ago
4,3,2,1 ftw. This should have won.
LHDRUMMER2012 11 months ago
This is the winner in my opinion. He had my attention the whole time. I like that he used different groves and played in a nice chop for each. That is versatility
TrevWILL79 11 months ago
Clyde you rock man. Keep on with your funky grooves. If you're ever playing in GA hit me up.

@calberg123 gotcha doc...

LOL
FVDrums 11 months ago
So good to see a solo with some dynamic range!
Justcardona 11 months ago
I dont think race has anything to do with who won. What makes you good on the drums is practice. Just saying that race has anything to do with it doesnt hold up.
I dont understand why this cat didnt win though. I know who was on the judges panel but I still dont get it. He used brushes, he swung, had some great licks, looked in control, had a great groove, had the crowd into what he was doing......
Hopefully the right people hear of this guy and he gets a great gig. He inspired me.
romp6969 11 months ago
@neilxpeart Yea I plan on it, unless my music career wont allow me to... It was a fun competition. The prizes, the network, paid vacation ect ect. Finals were TOTALLY different, but I can say if I make it back I'll be more prepared for the things that will hinder your performance...
isopanisad3 11 months ago
you should have won
tylerorozco32 11 months ago
I'm so confused why he didn't win. Just feels like these drum offs are now just based on how flashy a drummer can play. Not the feel and groove the drummer provides. Pity
neilxpeart 11 months ago
y didnt he win? he was great!

isaias gil did not impress me one bit but this guy def did! he should of won hands down

@Leheno- Yea the tech barely put the cowbell on for me. I guess he didnt screw it on tight enuff. When it fell off, it was hooked over my foot for a lil bit... LOL Had to play thru it tho...
@SpaCityThe judges were all well accomplished drummers... Kenny Arnoff, Dave Elitch, Keith Harris, Taylor Hawkins, Rich Latham, Trevor Lawrence Jr, Tony Royster Jr, Jason Sutter, John Tempesta, and Atom Willard....
isopanisad3 11 months ago
I'm trying to figure out why Clyde didn't win. He showed more creativity, emotion, dynamics, and better groove than anyone there - including the winner. Anyone know who the judges were?
spacitydrummer4JC 11 months ago
Cowbell falls off at 2:00 lol
Leheno 11 months ago

The 4-3-2-1 was a warm-up I came up w/ to show 2 of my friends different hand/foot passages. It just so happens that if you play a 5pc kit and play 4321, it evenly takes up 64 (16th Notes) which evenly divides into 4 measures w/ the crash ending on beat 1 of next measure. Pretty dope. I shocked myself when I was just playing it... lolol
isopanisad3 11 months ago
@isopanisad3 really u shocked urself ...omg..!!
khandice06 11 months ago
@khandice06 LOLOL i did... I didnt really realize that the 4321 warm-up could be a great drum lick...
isopanisad3 11 months ago

Uhhhh Geez they spelled my name wrong... Clyde Frazier III... Great footage tho... Preciate everone's comments. I might need 2 be a stunt double for all these famous names ppl throwing out (Mike Tomlin, Cedric The Entertainer, Randy Jackson) Sheesh smh LOL... And my snare is not a 13x8 Pearl Master's Series... Its a Limited Edition 13x9 Pearl Anniversary African Mahogany Wood Snare. Evans HD Dry on the batter side... All the contestants did a heck of a great job...Had a BLAST there...
isopanisad3 11 months ago 43
