  • I love how they looked. They were so hot while most women looked like my grandma even though they were 17.

  • It seems profoundly tragic that the newer generations can't find the inspiration to produce music of this calibur.

Raised by schools and media instead of parents. Want without purpose. Prideful and scornful. Lustful without knowing love. They forget family in favor of material gain or social standing.

Music like this speaks to the soul, because it comes from the soul. It is truth being poured out in music with the intent to express the beauty of such sentiments. Is this truth lost now?

  • all of a sudden im transported to a spring day many years ago and my first love.....

  • Breathtaking. This is one of my top-ten, all-time favourite songs. The power is incredible.

  • BIG HAIR!!

  • I saw Ronni sing this about 10 years ago. She stool on the edge of the stage and tears came down her face! WONDERFUL MOMENT!! You know how much she loved doing this!

  • Music was better back then, not like the crap we have today...That was singing.

  • I guess things were differant back then, I never called my girl a ho, I loved her, and had to much respect for her. My grand daughter tells me im out of touch with reality Maybe shes right, because I would never want to be brought up the way kids are today. Its sad America has degenerated to the point it has.

  • @angloamer123 : Take heart; old folks of that era and the era before that said the same thing. Every generation has its good and bad.

  • Hi kiforrey!

I just wanted to thank you for your kind words. I was hoping I wasn't trying to say too much. I return to this song often as it is dream-like, in a way metaphorical as it launches the imagination... a kind of ethereal quality to this piece. Perhaps I'm unconsciously reacting to its dissonance or augmented chordal qualities. At least that's what I think I'm hearing ha! I also find it in "Poor Side Of Town" by Johnny Rivers just to name another. Sincerely...

  • The Ronettes in white dresses around the piano. That illustrates the era perfectly.

Sorry Ronnie was going through such hell at the time with the future murderer Phil Spector.

  • Give thanks to 1 man as without Phil Spector we would never have had this music - thanks Phil! ! !

Every time i hear thi sthe hairs on my neck stand up and i get goose bumps all over

  • This is about as good as music can get. Totally irresistable. Thanks for all the photos too.

  • As a teenager in the sixties, I loved Ronnie Bennett.

  • Real nice video. Love the song. And the pics are stupendously great!

  • One of the greatest compositions of all time. Three of the most beautiful women. Great production. Timeless melody. Erotic. Sultry. Sensual. HRH Ronnie Spector. Thank God we heard her voice. Unique. The harmonies. This takes my breath away! krxn11

  • The Ronetts.........they were Fabulous!

  • Thanks Phil.

  • you think amy winehouse took a little bit of her style from the ronettes?? i do

  • @1highplains If she did so, then so did all the country singers of the late 60s/early 70s. I don't think the late Amy Winehouse copied Ronnie Bennett-Spector specifically; I think it was more an era thing.

  • these chicas were magical.

  • I may not be a teenager on the outside but listening to this...Im one inside.

  • I wonder if what I'm terming as ,call and response, is a technique originating from the roots of gospel music, like in the song “Amen” that Sydney Portier sang in the movie “Lillies of the Field”. It's so magical. Listen, just one example... “Johnny, no no he'll never do. Bobby, no it isn't him too.

  • @mwj5368 (see the other parts to this) They would never - no they'd never - never ever love...” and other phrases at times echoing between the lead singer and the other two girls. Is my observation right? What a beautiful song, and such a great treasure they are, The Ronettes....

  • @mwj5368 Yes! The Call & Response in gospel has its roots in what used to be called, "Negro Spirituals," which were preceded by field songs, aka work songs or slave songs. The polyrhythms & cadences originated in Africa, in the rituals and work songs of various cultures across the continent - slavery meant an erasure of language and lots of cultural traditions, but music endured.

  • Their harmony, so precise the separations, so dream-like, and the stormy effect... wow! Whenever I heard this as a kid I froze, really listened. I think there might be a historic phenomenon going on here, among the many musical gems that harken back many generations from our African Americans of the deep South. Something's there, a captivating “call and response” element of its own rhythm, an astounding kind of haunting, reverberating, chordal dissonance.

  • @mwj5368 First, I agree with everything you said in your comment. Second, I just want to say how much I appreciate reading a comment that is well-said, grammatically correct, and also spelled correctly.

  • Beautiful

  • Well I love me some Supremes and their older stuff with the three of them singing instead of the studio girls doing the backup was the best. With Phil Spector sound with the R's he was focused fully on Ronnie and not Nedra and Estelle so I never knew who was doing the backup with their records. Overall I loved the R's records but The S's had that extra beat that sort of rode over Phil's production. MOTOWN was HOT baby!

  • The reverb on the background vocals is awesome, what makes me sad is how America turned into a piece of shit since then.

  • I'll agree that the Ronettes version trumps both Jay and the Americans and The Walker Brothers. Nothing like having the Spector wall of sound. What this says, though, is that it takes a great voice to sing this song with character and clarity. All versions have their merits.

  • God, I love this song!!!!!

  • I think this is their best.

  • I like a lot of the Supremes music, but I think too the Ronettes were far superior in quality of music and Phil's wall of sound - this music was not just good or great, - it was unbelievable....

  • @unclewalt56 Yes, yes, the Supremes seemed a little too Broadway with not enough soul. The Ronettes, pure soul even with the sound effects and famous wall of sound.

  • @Jugivadi Martha and the Vandellas had more soul than Ronettes and Supremes combined. The Velvelettes ("He Was Really Saying Something" & "Needle In a Haystack") were unsung but just as soulful as the Vandellas. I am fan of both Ronettes and Supremes. Supremes harmonies a bit closer to gospel style and soul music was really gospels secular sister.

  • is it just me or does beyonce look like she turning into a demon?

  • The Ronettes or Jay and the Americans? Tie.

  • @56richardcory Tie? Dude what are you smoking?....I happened to hear Jay and the Americans version of this recently on Sirius...sounded like Pat Boone and a backing group. Soul my man! Ronnie and the girls with Spector producing had soul blasting out of every crevice in the Great Wall of Sound. No contest!

  • so loving this!!! first heard this one when i was 6. waiting with my mom for my dad to get off work in their marquis. it came on and she cranked it and sang along. 46 now and i will never forget that 3 minutes in my life.

  • A lot of potentially great recordings by the Ronettes were never released due to Phil Spector's insecurities of being upstaged. These girls should have been bigger than the Supremes.

  • no words to say just silent memories of my life then..and a very small tear running down my cheek..thanks ronettes

  • @rudeman15 with you there my friend

  • This music gives me goose bumps and takes me back to a place that no longer exists, but lets me feel it. Superb.

  • Darn it Phil, why did you do it?? Your "little symphonies" for the kids with the wall of sound really got through to me. Now all I have are the memories and the music, and the knowing that you will never get out of prison. How could it end this way?

  • @starbroadcasting Mad genius. With talent comes a price. Van Gough was the same way.

  • I'm 61...and STILL have a crush on Ronnie....

  • these women are so beautiful and classy.....this is music history...thanks for posting...they will never be duplicated

  • 1st class, a great production

  • Spector is one of the best musicians ever

  • Great song! Great rendition! Ronnie is super!!!

  • I totally forgot they sing this song. Cool.

  • These Pictures Are Beyond Priceless! I've mentioned this before

but I've always noticed a "vacant" look in Estelles Eyes.

I now know it was "mental illness".....What Hell She Must of Gone through.

    RIP Estelle

  • umm Phil would have not as been as great without Ronnie and other groups

  • Sends chills up my spine. No time was ever as good or will ever be as good as the 60s.

  • There are many songs with this title, but this is the very best. Check out the 1972 one by Love Unlimited.

Phil was really firing on all cylinders when he did this. Not overproduced - but hardly skimped on. What a beautiful song. Phil won his only Grammy award for this, for sound effects. I play stuff like this for friends, and they're blown away. It is so sad stuff like this has gotten lost, and not played on oldies radio. When I finally heard He's A Rebel, my neck hair actually stood on end!

  • Sorry to hear of Estelle's death here. The Ronettes induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was in Rolling Stone, but I missed the obituary they must have had? The article didn't mention her not performing. Ironic both she and Phil had schizophrenia.

I had Nedra Talley's 1978 gospel album, Full Circle. Also a DJ copy of Born to Be Together, with the oft-repeated comment :"WHAT A GREAT RECORD - WHY ISN'T IT A HIT?"

See Phil in the Teddy Bears video! He didn't like stereo. This is excellent.

  • Wow!

  • The lead singers....style like frankie lyman..I love it.

  • @FrenchieCorona Funny you should say that, '. . style like frankie lyman' because that's exactly who she was influenced by. I believe you can still find an interview clip of Ronnie Spector here on youtube in which she mentions this.

  • I love it!

  • If I can't hear the Ronettes in heaven then count me out. Absolutely beautiful

  • @andyrw100

Well, in heaven we worship Jesus only. If that's not enough for you you don' t belong in heaven in the first place.

  • @ZLUGGO Kind of missing the point but never mind :-)

  • @andyrw100

I' m approaching your statement from a strictly theological point of view.

  • @ZLUGGO Oh well......if I "don't belong in heaven in the first place" then maybe I'll end up wherever John Lennon is for stating that The Beatles were "more popular than Jesus now" and it being taken out of context......or maybe where the Pythons will end up for making "Life Of Brian".......... or even in Philip Pullman's "Republic of Heaven". Guess I'll have to take my chances.

  • @andyrw100

Lennon didn' t end up there for saying that but for not believeing in Jesus, för refusing to accept His offer.

It would be cruel of God to force someone into heaven if that person doesn' t wish to be there.

"Life of Brian" is ridiculous in a way. You don' t sing and whistle when you're crucified. If someone would make a movie suggesting that Auschwitz was a Broadway musical he would face opposition. And rightly so.

  • Beautiful Pictures, however the original MONO recording is corrupted by the attempt to convert to stereo. The Wall of sound was engineered to play out of a single speaker system and that's all cars had back then. Also thunder is not left/right but envelops everything and the Ronettes performing as a trio were never far apart so voice separation is not accurate. Sometimes it is best not to tamper with perfection, as there was no "ORIGINAL Stereo Version". Sounds great but....

  • @Gwhitebeard the instrumentals, lead vocal, and backing vocals were all recorded seperately, so the song was originally in stereo until phil spector combined all the tracks to one mono mix. it's nice to hear them separated because you notice little details that would've been drowned out in mono

  • i loved all of the girl groups! I'm suprized that England didn't produce a female vocal group to tour with the beatles.

  • Jimlea72: Thank you for your wondeful video montage. You've captured the grace, charm, and class of the Ronettes. This is a vanished world in music.

And yes Phil Spector looks scary even then.

    Fred

  • so beautiful

  • This song gives me chills all down my spine, every time I listen to it.

    A gem.

  • Awesome video to an already great song. Two thumbs up. Ricky!

  • The Ronettes are unequaled when it comes to beauty, sound and charisma.

  • can't listen just once

  • I no longer watch the grammys..as there is no one who could touch these girls of the 60's..sad.. even today no one can come near there stunning voices capeable of touching anyone who has a soul.

  • My God, where has the music gone. This is a great example of how much better music was back then when people could really sing. It's hard to believe this gorgious woman could fall for Phil Spector....she should have been with me all along. Teriffic singer.

  • TERRIFIC VIDEO "STILLS"! TOM D. BRICK,NJ. {AT THE SHORE}.

  • estelle was so beautiful,such a shame she's gone,R.I.P gal

  • This song was covered by two of the most powerful male vocalists, Jay Black and the Americans and Scott Walker, Walker Brothers. Ronnie does it better. Spector's wall of sound makes the difference.

  • NOTHING will ever beat this music!!!

  • Can't stop looking at Ronette's photo's, all 3 so beautiful, especially Estelle.

Say what you want about Phil Spector, one strange, neurotic Jew,.........

but no one can ever dispute his musical genius.

  • phil spector was bat shit. love this song

  • Ah! Veronica.... a latin beauty. She seems a philippine girl. Great Phil Spector's sound!!!!

  • no words to describe what this song means to me but hairs stand on end everytime i hear it

  • RONNY AND THE RONETTES THAT WAS THEIR NAME, WHEN THEY SANG THEY REALLY BOUGHT THE TEARS OUT OF MY EYES. ESPIECLY WALKING IN THE RAIN, THAT WAS MY FAVORITE SONG BY THEM, CUZ IT SOUND LIKE RONNY WAS REALLY SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT GUY.NEVER WILL THEL BE A GROUP LIKE THE RONETTES. QUE VIVA SU MUSICA.

  • This was my very favorite song by them, I still get chills in my skin when I hear it!!!

  • Back to Mono!

  • Larry Levine the engineer won a grammy in 64 for best use of sound effect!!

  • Estelles passing makes me think of Amy Winehouse. Sad, sad, sad

  • Kind of neat seeing a much younger Phil Spector. Not quite as freaky looking as he is in his old age. I have to agree with philipromeo .

  • Although Phil Spector may have cracked up, he was a genius and true visionary.

  • oh yea those good old days,SUPER

  • The Ronettes were the kind of girls you probably couldn t handle on your first date

  • This is SO magnificent Thank you!!!! So Glorious in stereo!!

  • Hal Blaine...brilliant drummer.

  • talent and class all in one package..Sweet :-)

  • The Ronettes set the bar for all of the female rock and roll acts that followed in the 70's , 80's and 90's.

  • I forgot all about this song, thanks for sharing..........great song !!!!!!

  • This is just INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL! I have not heard this song in years!

    Thanks so much for posting!

  • Yeah, my right arm used to have a big bicep muscle in it because of all that teasing (back-combing) our hair.

  • These photos are priceless! Thank you SO MUCH for putting all of this together! I think that the Ronettes are by fare the most underrated girl group in history.

  • @LesbianVampireLover

totaly agree with your great comment :)

  • @LesbianVampireLover You got that right.Rock On

  • Just great. THANKS It took hours to get our hair that high. The bangs had to be 'just right.' What a time that was. All precious. Ronnie's music kept us so happy. (although we always thought Phil was rather scary--even then). Appreciate you sharing this.

  • Best sound of all for this song!!! Thanks for letting us hear this so wonderful music. Just hearing it reminds me of those days when there was so much hope and no one would ever go out looking deliberately like a homeless person and Wall Street was still regulated! Thanks!

  • This song has been covered by many, but NO ONE sang it better than Ronnie Spector.

  • Beautiful, and the photo montage is great!! Thanks! I wish I could go back too.

  • Wow, I sure like this version since it includes assorted pictures of the Ronettes. The other version is also fine. I just know I love this song as much as I did when I was 13 yrs of age!! My compliments and thanks for this wonderful video. God, I wish I could go back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for this. I just checked another stereo version of this and it wasn't nearly as well separated. The background vocals on this are clear and sublime!

  • You don't hear the backup track as clearly in Mono; I like it.

  • This song is just sooooooooooooooooo sweet.... aw!

  • Bravo & merci!!!

  • Outstanding!! Thanks "Jimea72" for keeping this classic music alive..Hope you get lots of views!

  • you're welcome, thanks

  • superb,thank you for posting.
