This is the better version. David is one of my favorite singers but he did not capture the feeling like Richard did plus The Andantes and The Monitors backing vocals on this is better. The only thing The Temps did better was let Melvin sing a line lets make plans for 2.
@jamar22100 The Andantes are not in this record. The MONITORS already had a girl in their group ,Sandra Fagin. That's her that you hear on the high notes in the background.
One more thing!. I have to say this! Richard Street is no David Ruffin~So to say This version is better than the Tempts is like saying Richard singing MY GIRL sounds better than Rufiin!~NOPE~ I've always wondered what fool decided to let Richard do My Girl when the Tempts would do live shows~WHO???? I'm thinking why not Dennis~ being he was the One Replacing Ruffin in the group! If Ruffins not there to sing it! what's the point!
thank God Richards no longer with them~he fucked that song up!
Okay! this is the original version same track the Tempts used~I must say ! after listening to this for a minute it's pretty good! but compared to the Tempts it seems to drags only because Richard drags his notes where David was tighter with a touch of that unique, Ruffin GRIT! with a more uptempo flavor~to his vocals and with Eddie,Otis Paul and Melvin backing it up! the Tempts doing background is untouchable and no group compares Vocally! The Tempts version pushed the tempo! !~GOLD!
Comparing the Tempts to the Monitors is like comparing apples to oranges. There is NO COMPARISON! The Tempts version is much more smoother; gotta love that tight, 5 part harmony!
Richard Street & The Monitors KILLED this song !! THIS IS THE ORIGINAL VERSION... And I like it better than The Temps version. (now, watch the fur fly from THAT comment . LOL.)
@williamg2552 I like The Monitors version too, if The Temptations version was better, then they would have got thesingle on this, lol, The Monitors version is THE BEST! there i said it
@MotownMaster I totally agree. Richard Street sang this song with more fire and passion than David. Plus ,Sandra's high voice in the background adds a fuller sound.
@MotownMaster ,not exactly, compared to what was being released on The Tempts, it would make no sense to release it because Get Ready and Aint Too Proud To Beg were the superior songs ont he album
@williamg2552: I totally agree!, Richard sang it with SOUL attached to it while David sang it with only soul attached to it because while Richard sang it with meaning david sang it as an afterthought with a "to hell with this attitude." So with that said The Monitors definately WIN this one over The Tempts by a mile.
i like this version but i love The Tempts version better

Ruff's and The Temps version was a lot better. Melvins parts really added to the song.

The Monitors released it as a single, maybe a years before the Temptations "Getting Ready" album was released.

To me this record encapsulates everything that made early Motown so great. Just magnificent.

The Temptations recorded this song as well - it is featured on their "Gettin Ready' album, and the very first track also!!
