I'm for the anti-blasphemy laws. "God is a wanking cunt fucker smelly turd licking back of shit" is wrong to say ....... and death to those who say it.
My 2nd note on this subject concerns the Irish Blasphemy Law. which prohibits; "publishing or uttering matter that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters sacred by any religion, thereby intentionally causing outrage, with some defences permitted".
Which is absurdly vague & self discrediting. e.g. Book 8 of the Hadith 427: “May Allah curse the Jews and Christians.”
which nit wit came up with a law to prevent blasphemy & simultantiously outlaws the preaching of religious texts?
"Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience & religion-to such limitations as are prescribed by law-necessary-in the interests of public safety, for protection of public order."
"Everyone has the right of freedom of expression-to hold opinions, receive & impart information & ideas without inference by public authority."

We should have no qualm about scorning the self deluded, irrational, parasitic religious. They deserve no respect, only ridicule, disdain, and contempt. There ridicules beliefs are 1st century ignorance and fear at its worst. It is of the utmost importance for the health of civilization to eradicate the god virus. With information so easily available, being ignorant today is by choice.
Did their laws explain 'what blasphemy is'? Isn't it something like 'libel' against someone's Flying Spaghetti Monster? (I forget if that's the actual word, but it's what Henry Ford successfully sued a newspaper for it when the paper called him "uneducated" because he hadn't gone through all the schooling other businessmen had gone through, as described in "Think & Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill)
@drjackflash because they're ridiculous laws that should be abolished for the sake of free speech. I'm sure most of us don't live in Africa yet we're still worried about the Syrian/Libyan civil war, the prosecution of Gays and the constant conflict of religion;/
@Kyruis The UK does NOT have blasphemy laws, Ireland does. And please make the difference here, the UK is Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. The above are Atheist and multicultural countries. The rest of Ireland is the abortion hating, blasphemy crazy catholics.
And again, 9/11? Well what about 7/7? Do you even know what I'm talking about? If you do, congrats, if not, well, enough said.
"Blasphemy Laws" It's such a kinky law! Beyond idiotic and perverse! How could anyone make laws against "blasphemy"!? What does it mean anyway? How could you blaspheme against human imaginanations anyhow!? Religion is just a sick imagination! How are we supposed to give respect for psychotics!? It's beyond me!!! UN must wake up from their perverse dreams!!!
we have anti blasphemy laws in denmark. but they are not used. however a group of muslims tried to make a trial against jyllands posten after they printed the mohammed drawings. luckily they lost. we have a lot of outdated laws in denmark!
I have to call Bullshit here. As an Irish citizen I can safely say that this Blasphemy law wasn't passed recently. It has been in our Constitutoion since the founding of the Free Irish State. It has never been used... not in recent times anyways... and probably never will be. The law was brought up in Senate discusison recently where it garnered the attention of the political left. The Minister for Justice quite rightly stated that ammending the Iris Constitution cannot be done without ...cont
having a referendum on the ammendment being considered. This referendum will take place in November of next year 2011. It is my hope that the Irish people will vote against this law in the referendum, and if so ... it can then be removed from the Irish Constitution. ...the idea that this law was passed recently is ludicrous! ... in any case, the idea that people can go around making ammentments to any Countries Constitution without holding a referendum on it is ridiculous!
@rangergxi ... did I not just state that a referendum will be held concerning the validity of this law next year? Nobody in Irish society takes this law seriously. If anyone were to utilise it as a ''weapon'' against people they did not like ...there would be a massive public out cry. Such a utilisation would almost certainly back fire ...considering the cultural zeitgeist in Ireland at the moment...
I'm Irish and Ireland has a constitution, and it's unconstitutional to blaspheme any gods or religions, the original fine was £100,000, so the most recent legislation reduced the fine and clarifies the reason one would receive such a fine.
hahah these kind of law could never be brought in Balkan ... one of most common curse words here is "jebem ti boga" literally mean "fucking your god".

by doing what? aethiest are the exact same as people without religion just people with religion (statisticly) live longer, weigh less, donate more money to charities, start more charities, get higher grades in school, and go to jail less and they fight against the "values" we have NAME WHAT HORRIBLE THINGS YOU THINK WE ARE DOING
haha you have just called yourself stupid because you now obviously lack the intelligence to read my username correctly its it in the for of ya me stupid as in yes it is me stupid calling the other stupid you saying that it is correct call yourself stupid not me
@yamestupid What the fuck? Dude, you can take a shit on a piece of paper and call it a statistic, but still it will be just a pile of shit. Exactly like what you wrote.
where do i get those stats? Christians at least Mormons which i am part of can see our members ages and we take the average life expectancy to the average of (North america , US, Canada, all of world) and its higher than all of them thats where i get my stats
bombing/killing off other countries, repressing human rights, repressing freedom of speech, arguing that creationism should go anywhere near a classroom, brainwashing and scaring the pants off children (catholics a little more literal with the latter), giving people false hope in exchange for a limited life, general stupidity, lots of hypocrisy (both in terms of others as well as your supposed holy book), scamming millions of untaxed money from naive or desperate people... can i stop now?
ok name one counrty that my church as mormons has bombed we are in no way reppressing human rights because they have no conrtol over the people they come on own free will we allow people to speak what they will in our churches and there is no brainwashing involved only an idiot would believe it people give money on their own free will and it helps pay for schooling and aid to desperate countries general stupidity? the average IQ of Mormons is higher than north americas can i stop now?
2: not only is domestic violence down nearly 75% but marriages in our religion are 80% more likely to not get a divorce
3: People start random bullshit rumours about mormons like they wouldnt let blacks into our church we have in my own church many black inviduals many hispanic asian middle eastern and cacasiion people which one are we discriminating? we voted against gay marriages they started violent atacks on our temples? whos doing hate crime
3. Because individuals who have been struggling for equality and fair treatment have finally had enough with all the bullshit that people, especially religeon, have thrown at them and eventually when people have had enough (especially with proposition 8 and the money the mormon church threw at it to help make it pass) with your bullshit or anyone's bullshit, they resort to the biggest fuck you they can and that manifested in mormons getting attacked. Don't blame the gays, blame your church.
@yamestupid Why would you vote against gay marriage I am just asking because you say you are mormon and I no nothing of what a mormon believes. If you do respond please don't just say because I think it's wrong give me an actual comment from your religious veiws. Tell me how it would effect you or your anyone. Don't just simply say because god says it's wrong. If that is all you are going to say then don't respond. Peace
@putthisonmytab becuase we believe that marriage is a sacred bond held by a man and a women continues on after death and that god did not mean marriage to be between a man and a man or a women and a women. and we also believe that our children should not be raised accustomed to gays together so openly. You can be gay i dont care just stop rubbing it in our faces
@yamestupid So how would that harm your life if gays could marry? Or if a gay couple was raising a kid a couple houses down from yours? People challange your beliefs because they don't like someone telling them what they can or can't do. Based offa something that might not even exist. If someone told u. You can't do that it's against my religion u wouldn't agree. You'd prob do it anyway. If what you were doing was something you did every day. If people are told no! What do u think they will do?
@putthisonmytab becuase gay people have a gay rights parade thats how they harm us i dont have a straight rights parade? their shoving it in our face that thier gay so they should be different its not us making the laws if you believe that your an idiot its the government and the majority of the human population in the us that not our fualt. and "Stop trying to make rules for everyone else's life just because you think it's wrong." what do you think government do 24/7 idiot throughout history
@yamestupid Dude straight people wouldn't have parades for being straight cause straight people where never oppressed for the fact that they are straight. How the hell is having a gay rights parade harming you? Explain that to me. The government making rules about gay marraige still doesn't make it right and neither are you.
@putthisonmytab its annoying the gay people of the world think they have to push it into our face that their gay if they hadnt been showing us so much and bringing it up so much and saying about their rights so much the government wouldnt have made laws against it. and obviously the majority of the U.S agrees with it. The government has been making laws on whats right your an idiot for thinking otherwise
@yamestupid That isn't at all why it is illegal to get married if your gay the gov didn'tmake it illegal because they kept on pushing it. It has been illegal for ever in America. U think back in the 50, 60 and so on even before then they pushed for gay rights as now no if they did then they woulda been killed or beaten. They were to scared so they never really pushed it to the gov. It's all religion. U think gays are not equal to straights. Even tho majority rules does not alwess make it right.
@yamestupid So two straight people who hate each other can get married but two people who love each other can't. And that makes sense to you? WoW sad the sanctity of marriage. Whats so sacred about someone getting married when that person is only trying to get cash out of it. That doesn't sound to sacred to me.
@putthisonmytab that isnt sacred thats not in a true temple that is most likely just legal also ive grown tired of idiotic conversation iwill no longer reply
That's argument from history. Just because that's the way it has happened or does happen doesn't make it right. You'll find that it works exactly opposite because society is far more progressive than our distant past.
A gay right's parade does not harm you. Homosexuals are a minority and feel the need to demonstrate. It is a beacon of morale and a rallying point, and also a strong element of democracy.
But you would put the power into the elite wouldn't you? And sacrifice your voice?
no, theyre not asking you to come to the parade, theyre having it for themselves not you.does the columbus day parades piss you off too? that is "they" are pushing their columbus agenda on you right? its that rediculous. lighten up
You can be intolerant, but stop rubbing it in other people's faces.
Do you see how facetious that is? If you don't like gay marriage, just don't get one!
But more importantly the fact of the matter is, your church wont be *mandated* to give such marriages. They could if they wanted to or allowed it, but if they objected to a marriage there's no reason in the world for them to give it out.
It's that simple. The only thing standing in the way is bigotry and arrogance.
Yeah. It is wrong to try and ban gay marriage whether you like it or not. I am against organized religion but I'm not trying to pass a bill to get it banned am I? I will debate people over it, but I'm not trying to get illegalize it, as that would go against everything I believe in.
@yamestupid In no way repressing human right? Dude it should be the right for anyone to live how they wan't if it isn't harming your life. Stop trying to make rules for everyone else's life just because you think it's wrong. You aren't that person and you don't know what is best for them.
The scarry thing is, I can see that shit happening here in America. I hope not, but the fact is, we already have laws that are based soley on religon. Such as Sunday laws, no alcohol sales, gays not being allowed to get married. With all the religious politicians we have I can see a law getting passed here that would violate our rights to free speech. You know the religious right wants that shit. They would love to see free speech taken away as long as it benefits them.
For the moment, the First Amendment's freedom of speech provisions are still widely supported. Consider also that without the first amendment, the extremists don't have a legal leg to stand on. Neo-Nazis, Klansmen, radical environmentalists, militia nuts, and many others may meet and talk freely here, so long as they don't advocate direct violence or criminality. An anti-blasphemy law is such an obvious contradiction of any reading of the Bill of Rights that it's inconceivable right now.
The worst ones would make nonbelief a capital crime. Just look at Fischer, Terry, and Falwell, none of whom are politicians but would win if they ran.
TO ALL AMERICAN ATHEIST: Silent protest... all you paper currency.. use a sharpie and just cross out where it says GOD on all bills... (this is not defacing per US laws)
@Chaostiger357 Wow that is a very good idea, has that idea been around for a while? I'd do it I would be an American.. I'm lucky enough to live in a country that "god" hates (Sweden) so I don't have to cut anything from our bills, but I would if we had god in it =)
I wonder... do those laws encompass tourists as well?
I've been to ireland once on a school trip, and i would love to come back just to enjoy the countryside some more, and of course nip at a few drinks, but if i'll get fined 25k euros for voicing my opinions and views then i think i'll stay home and consider ireland a nation in a downwards spiral of oppressive religious politics like many others i know :s
I wonder about that as well - what's going to happen when the next high school class goes over there and half the class gets hit will 25K fines....
....or is this one of those laws that will only be enforced if the officials need to hold a suspect in order to get more evidence so they charge them with blaspheme and lock them up for 48 hours. (because that is what god would do)
I'm in Ireland and we do have a constitution, the problem is it was written at a time when the Catholic Church was still a political Megalith in the country. Blasphemy is mentioned in it, along with sedition and other crimes of speech, in fact it is the constitution that is being used as an excuse as to why we 'need' this law. The relevent minister apparently doesn't think that saying he got the idea from a bunch of jumped up mullahs will have the same effect.
AMERICANS please read. Having lived in Ireland (Belfast) for a period I noticed that being protestant or catholic was MORE of a statement of a persons political persuasion. Is there a similarity in America? As an Australian citizen, religion just DOES NOT rate whatsoever in any political argument whatsoever. In Ireland protestant = keep north and south segregated, Catholic = reunite the nation.
There are certainly political trends within religious denominations in the US. It seems to me like the Evangelical Protestant denominations are aligned with conservative politics while more progressive denominations (Quakers, UUs and oddly enough Catholics) are aligned with liberal or at least centrist politics.
lol. Our politicians constantly use god as a way to attract certain demographics. The belief in a christian god is nothing more than a marketing tool to earn the favor of those like minded, brain washed, christian people. They will even go as far as to claim significant people as christian, even though that person may have never spoken about their personal beliefs in the first place. Certainly you have even seen some of our entertainers thanking god for everything. Its honestly disgusting!!
To a lesser extent...well sort of, you can make an assumption based on someones denomination where they are from but its really not cut and dry. I come from New England (northeast) which is predominantly catholic, but certainly not limited to catholicism, and it certainly isnt as polarized as it is where you come from, Christians dont discriminate against each other based on sect.
I am just wondering why these guys aren't in the studio I've seen them in so often. I haven't seen them in their studio since one of the earlier episodes. Just curious.
The tv studio they normally work out of is, i think, closed for the summer months. I think they're revamping it, so they're currently just running the show out of Matt's home until the studio reopens with new equipment.
Mental Note. Do not visit Ireland. Any country that gets their butt kicked by England is pretty much fail anyways. IRA got totally stomped. FAIL Ireland pure fail.
Haha, what? Ireland (at least the southern part) is an independent Republic - nothing to do with England. The North has devolved Government, in much the same way Wales and Scotland does. Is this your attempt at trolling, or are you really this stupid?
I live in Ireland and im not gona stop speakin out against religion ever ,the courts will have to stick me in jail and even then i still wont stop.FUCK THIS DARK AGE LAW!!
While watching this video i read the Irish Constitution and it has a right to free speech enumerated. However, it is qualified by the duty not to rock the boat( in so many words) by denigrating any religion or state institution or disturbing the public order. Typical of former religious oligarchies now afraid of losing relevance and power to secular institutions. We got them scared!
I like this song. Anyone know what it is? Guerrilla Atheist Experience doesn't have opening credits like regular Atheist Experience does. Though I'm glad to see the FSM has once again made his noodly presence known on the show.
Don't worry fellas we are fighting that new "law" with whatever we have. Recently the church was involved in a huge abuse case and then they bring this law in(Some neck)... It's a joke and we will disolve it. We appreciate the support!
I know where the word "god" repeated over and over: porn movies (so they are religious ppl), So, does this mean the ABL will be used against them too?
If so, I guess that makes the ABL doesn't only an issue for atheist's concern ...
Our constitution was made in such as way to give the Catholic church extra power in our government. It is far from secular and totaly not in favour of free speech.
2:52 I love that he says "I bet someone from Ireland calls or messages us before the day's over." because their first caller from that episode was from Ireland.
I am against because it comes off as if we are ALL believers. If you are an atheist, you cannot be blasphemous given that you do not believe in god. "Holy cow!" is blasphemous toward Hindus but people shout it. How is it considered blasphemous if I am not a part of that religion? I think this law's purpose to further prevent religious discussing because it would mean that we cannot say what we want in regards to any deity to prove or disprove them. Christians say blasphemous things ALL the time
Blasphemous ejaculations such as "Oh lord." "Oh my god" "Jesus Christ!" If you are a Christian, you are basically taking your god's name in vain. Not only that but those crosses, the Last Supper, all those images of a perceived Christ, those stupid "WWJD" shirts are blasphemous so why should the WORLD suffer under a law when those desiring that same law are hypocrites themselves.
This all goes back to the main problem with religion. The belief that god is unquestionable. That's how religions keep people in line. They make it impossible for people to question god. In mass you are made to say "Glory to God in the highest" and "Oh Lord I am not worthy to receive you" and all this bullshit about god being better than you (It's sick really). Now its illegal to step out of line.
We need to change the Constitution but that would take a referendum.
I doubt it. The fact that people make fun of Christ, deny him, use Satanic imagery etc. is enough to keep people in line. In fact, the harder people push, the more stronger some people believe it is a test of their faith. Because feelings and god are both vague in definition, Reason, due to simplifying them both, make people ignore WHAT IS for WHAT COULD BE because they believe it is more complex than that. It always must be more complex than what it seems.
I don't think the artist has released an album with this song on it yet. so it is not likely available on iTunes yet. But I know you can hear the whole song on his Myspace page & contact the artist directly there too.

There should be a anti-blasphemy law...Depending on what was said should fit the crime. I say we should do more then that. Like saying and meaning there is no God ("I'm a atheist.") should result in a life time of being committed to a mental institution. Or at the vary lest, until cured of atheism.
Ireland has an anti-blasphemy clause in its constitution. What they need to do is revise their constitution to bring it more in line with the modern, secular European nation Ireland has become since winning independence. The difficulty is, so much of the Irish identity is bound up with Catholicism and the history of being persecuted (by the English) for their Catholicism. If the Republic were to become more secular, it could ease tension in N.I. as well. Eire needs a better constitution.
I think The Netherlands passed a sort of anti-blasphemy law.I mean if those fucking liberals continue to take our diminish our right, just so some people don't get offended,we can see islam extremist taking over Europe, just like the Nazis did.
These people are insulted when someone makes fun of their childish beliefs but they feel free to throw around the threat of eternal torture. Hell is the most immoral concept ever created by humanity. I know which is the more insulting.
I would go around every street corner blaspheming constantly. The minute they let me out, I'd go do it again. I would then make sure the news organizations around the world made it public globally; the bad press would be horrible for Ireland and I think they would change the law back.
Ireland has freedom of speech in their constitution. But is the dumbest constitution in Europe because it also prohibits abortion (Hope the EU fixes that soon!). And it has also fucked up the Lisbon treaty the first time, lets all hope that the Irish actually make the right choice in October and not just blindly follow the misleading information from the (abortion hating, god cock sucking whores) anti-EU idiots spreading BS propaganda left and right.
Freedom of speech: Guaranteed by Article 40.6.1. However, this may not be used to undermine "public order or morality or the authority of the State". Furthermore, the constitution explicitly requires that the publication of "blasphemous, seditious, or indecent matter" be a criminal offence (although in practice, this is widely ignored and unpunished[citation needed]). Well that's very interesting isn't it? Silly old laws come to bite you in the but.
We didn't "let" it happen, it wasn't even put to a public vote or referendum. Dermot Ahernn was like "it's been debated non-stop for three years, it's time to make a decision". NO. It was not discussed because it was never possible to charge people for it. Unfortuanitely he has just now changed the definition of blasphemy to make it a punishable law. Fuckwads... Tune into The Atheist Experience this Sunday. I'll be doing a full-recap of the events.
Freedom of speech is one of the most important rights ANYONE could have. So what if they says some mean stuff about somebody's religion? Get over it and don't be a pussy.
Its strange to think of the Irish taking this anti-speech BS... they do tend to have a "shove it" sort of stereotype, take ass, kick names, that sort of thing.
Ireland, we're rooting for you.
As for me and mine here in the US, and not to be overly dramatic, but... they'll take our free speech from our cold dead hands. They pass anti-blasphemy laws here, guess what a lot of Americans will do? Thats right... make it a point to blaspheme all over federal properties.
It's really just the incompetence of our government that allowed such a stupid law to pass but it's against European law and the declaration of human rights so it's unlikely to stand for very long.
I think there will be a few writers and comedians etc. competing to be the first to be prosecuted under this new law.
I'm competing as well to be prosecuted, though I doubt even one will get past. If they where told about the true nature of the law, and that a possible 25,000€ was involved, I doubt many would back it though to be honest. Even fundies realise 25k is a lot for anyone.
Good luck with the competition. It'll be interesting to watch the first trial for blasphemy, my hope is that Ian O'Doherty will be the first charged.
On your second point ""If they where told about the true nature of the law", I think you have a lot more faith in the Irish electorate than I do. Fianna Fail have been re-elected again and again despite it being well known to anyone who pays attention that they are corrupt, incompetent and extremely wasteful of our wealth.
Before the last election bertie was up in front of the tribunals spinning all sorts of silly stories and still he was re-elected so I think it's obvious that the Irish electorate don't care enough about politics to pay attention.
If they're not willing to pay attention to all the other rubbish, what makes you think they'd care about blasphemy?
In the uk we recently got rid of all anti-blasphemy laws (as they said). Its strang to think that the country that sits right next to us, and has a very similar culture, has gone the complete opposite way.
i'm embarrassed to be irish today!Dermot Ahern's Blasphemy Law makes the Irish people a laughing stock around the world. We have returned to the middle ages. How can we stand back and have the right to free speach taken from us?
My Atheist Experience clips where ALL votebotted on the 21st July 2009. Please check out the playlist below, of clips from their episodes 500 and back.
UPDATE BEFORE I CALL THE SHOW ON SUNDAY On July 23rd 2009, The President of Ireland has now signed in the Blasphemy Law. All that remains to be done is for the "Minister For Justice" Dermott Ahernn (the asshat that started the whole shitstorm) - to confirm it and sign it in... which is more than likely going to happen. I'll be calling in on Sunday to give the latest details. Search "Blasphemy Ireland" for more details in any engine.
Article 44 remains in the Constitution [of Ireland]. It begins:
The State acknowledges that the homage of public worship is due to Almighty God. It shall hold His Name in reverence, and shall respect and honour religion.
So if I say that gawd(oops, I just blasphemed) doesn't exist(oops, again) and that the scriptures are fairytales(oops, again) and that holy books are not gawd's(oops) words but ancient human writings, and if I say that Jeebus(oops) and the Holy Freakin Pigeon(oops) I would be in contravention of this law??
I think the FSM(oops) is much more holy and loving than all other gods. What are they going to do when someone swears, Jesus Christ ALmighty, or Jesus Fucking Christ, or Goddamn??
I'm for the anti-blasphemy laws. "God is a wanking cunt fucker smelly turd licking back of shit" is wrong to say ....... and death to those who say it.

The Minister for Justice quite rightly stated that ammending the Iris Constitution cannot be done without ...cont
ndjm00 1 year ago
having a referendum on the ammendment being considered. This referendum will take place in November of next year 2011. It is my hope that the Irish people will vote against this law in the referendum, and if so ... it can then be removed from the Irish Constitution. ...the idea that this law was passed recently is ludicrous! ... in any case, the idea that people can go around making ammentments to any Countries Constitution without holding a referendum on it is ridiculous!
ndjm00 1 year ago
@ndjm00 Its still a law....
Christianity/politicans could use that as a weapon against people they don't like.
rangergxi 1 year ago

Mormons (compared to atheists)
1) have a higher perpetration of violent crime rate than atheists.
2) have a higher incidence of domestic violence disputes.
3) have a higher incidence of hate-based crimes
Furthermore, Mormons routinely vote in favor of discrimination based religious and culture-based propaganda
MrTouchShriek 2 years ago
1: it is the opposite i researched it thuoroghly

@putthisonmytab becuase we believe that marriage is a sacred bond held by a man and a women continues on after death and that god did not mean marriage to be between a man and a man or a women and a women. and we also believe that our children should not be raised accustomed to gays together so openly. You can be gay i dont care just stop rubbing it in our faces
yamestupid 2 years ago

@putthisonmytab its annoying the gay people of the world think they have to push it into our face that their gay if they hadnt been showing us so much and bringing it up so much and saying about their rights so much the government wouldnt have made laws against it. and obviously the majority of the U.S agrees with it. The government has been making laws on whats right your an idiot for thinking otherwise
yamestupid 2 years ago
@yamestupid That isn't at all why it is illegal to get married if your gay the gov didn'tmake it illegal because they kept on pushing it. It has been illegal for ever in America. U think back in the 50, 60 and so on even before then they pushed for gay rights as now no if they did then they woulda been killed or beaten. They were to scared so they never really pushed it to the gov. It's all religion. U think gays are not equal to straights. Even tho majority rules does not alwess make it right.
putthisonmytab 2 years ago 6
@yamestupid So two straight people who hate each other can get married but two people who love each other can't. And that makes sense to you? WoW sad the sanctity of marriage.

And sacrifice your voice?
snoman99991 2 years ago 5
no, theyre not asking you to come to the parade, theyre having it for themselves not you.does the columbus day parades piss you off too? that is "they" are pushing their columbus agenda on you right? its that rediculous. lighten up
adzug 2 years ago 4
You can be intolerant, but stop rubbing it in other people's faces.
Do you see how facetious that is? If you don't like gay marriage, just don't get one!
But more importantly the fact of the matter is, your church wont be *mandated* to give such marriages. They could if they wanted to or allowed it, but if they objected to a marriage there's no reason in the world for them to give it out.
It's that simple. The only thing standing in the way is bigotry and arrogance.
snoman99991 2 years ago 4
Yeah. It is wrong to try and ban gay marriage whether you like it or not. I am against organized religion but I'm not trying to pass a bill to get it banned am I? I will debate people over it, but I'm not trying to get illegalize it, as that would go against everything I believe in.

Macrochenia 2 years ago 6
The scarry thing is, I can see that shit happening here in America. I hope not, but the fact is, we already have laws that are based soley on religon. Such as Sunday laws, no alcohol sales, gays not being allowed to get married. With all the religious politicians we have I can see a law getting passed here that would violate our rights to free speech. You know the religious right wants that shit. They would love to see free speech taken away as long as it benefits them.
MyCatMischief 2 years ago 35
And they'd claim that they're "protecting" free speech when they do it.
Macrochenia 2 years ago 5
For the moment, the First Amendment's freedom of speech provisions are still widely supported. Consider also that without the first amendment, the extremists don't have a legal leg to stand on. Neo-Nazis, Klansmen, radical environmentalists, militia nuts, and many others may meet and talk freely here, so long as they don't advocate direct violence or criminality. An anti-blasphemy law is such an obvious contradiction of any reading of the Bill of Rights that it's inconceivable right now.

The relevent minister apparently doesn't think that saying he got the idea from a bunch of jumped up mullahs will have the same effect.
godofgoogle 2 years ago
AMERICANS please read. Having lived in Ireland (Belfast) for a period I noticed that being protestant or catholic was MORE of a statement of a persons political persuasion. Is there a similarity in America? As an Australian citizen, religion just DOES NOT rate whatsoever in any political argument whatsoever. In Ireland protestant = keep north and south segregated, Catholic = reunite the nation.
burkeyatm 2 years ago
There are certainly political trends within religious denominations in the US. It seems to me like the Evangelical Protestant denominations are aligned with conservative politics while more progressive denominations (Quakers, UUs and oddly enough Catholics) are aligned with liberal or at least centrist politics.
grobe42 2 years ago
IblisTheDefiant 2 years ago
To a lesser extent...well sort of, you can make an assumption based on someones denomination where they are from but its really not cut and dry. I come from New England (northeast) which is predominantly catholic, but certainly not limited to catholicism, and it certainly isnt as polarized as it is where you come from, Christians dont discriminate against each other based on sect.

Christians say blasphemous things ALL the time
HammandClov 2 years ago 2
Blasphemous ejaculations such as "Oh lord." "Oh my god" "Jesus Christ!" If you are a Christian, you are basically taking your god's name in vain. Not only that but those crosses, the Last Supper, all those images of a perceived Christ, those stupid "WWJD" shirts are blasphemous so why should the WORLD suffer under a law when those desiring that same law are hypocrites themselves.
HammandClov 2 years ago 2
... not to mention the idolatry represented in crosses, the Last Supper, communion, images of Christ, the Bible, etc.
Good point. Thanks.
graemhoek 2 years ago
This all goes back to the main problem with religion. The belief that god is unquestionable. That's how religions keep people in line. They make it impossible for people to question god. In mass you are made to say "Glory to God in the highest" and "Oh Lord I am not worthy to receive you" and all this bullshit about god being better than you (It's sick really). Now its illegal to step out of line.
We need to change the Constitution but that would take a referendum.
Kopper08 2 years ago 3

There should be a anti-blasphemy law...Depending on what was said should fit the crime. I say we should do more then that. Like saying and meaning there is no God ("I'm a atheist.") should result in a life time of being committed to a mental institution. Or at the vary lest, until cured of atheism.
1975DannyB 2 years ago
Ireland has an anti-blasphemy clause in its constitution. What they need to do is revise their constitution to bring it more in line with the modern, secular European nation Ireland has become since winning independence. The difficulty is, so much of the Irish identity is bound up with Catholicism and the history of being persecuted (by the English) for their Catholicism. If the Republic were to become more secular, it could ease tension in N.I. as well. Eire needs a better constitution.

Fianna Fail have been re-elected again and again despite it being well known to anyone who pays attention that they are corrupt, incompetent and extremely wasteful of our wealth.

continued....

Fuck religion.

i'm embarrassed to be irish today!Dermot Ahern's Blasphemy Law makes the Irish people a laughing stock around the world. We have returned to the middle ages. How can we stand back and have the right to free speach taken from us?
BillBergin 2 years ago
Seriously........ How could they just let that happen? I say everyone in Ireland blasphemes as a protest. They can't arrest the whole country.

Irish blasphemy law. Surprised? Not me!
robzrob 2 years ago
So is this law specific to the Abrahamic god or any god such as Zeus, Apollo, Thor, FSM, Ra, etc??
saxmanchiro 2 years ago
So if I say that gawd(oops, I just blasphemed) doesn't exist(oops, again) and that the scriptures are fairytales(oops, again) and that holy books are not gawd's(oops) words but ancient human writings, and if I say that Jeebus(oops) and the Holy Freakin Pigeon(oops) I would be in contravention of this law??
I think the FSM(oops) is much more holy and loving than all other gods. What are they going to do when someone swears, Jesus Christ ALmighty, or Jesus Fucking Christ, or Goddamn??
