If you notice, the theme tune was a sample from the top gun movie soundtrack. This brings back fond memories of the Amiga. Listening now, the stereo sound effects are pretty cool for such an old game. F29 Retaliator was epic also...then THX. I remember doing night missions in the F117 Nighthawk dropping JDAMs on targets.
I must have spent hours playing this game. I had my Amiga connected to our 25 inch Zenith TV. I would sit in the dark all night and play. It took some time but I beat the game. Great memories.
Still the BEST, most playable, most accessible yet in some way realistic flight sim i have EVER played! The only other games that came close would have been F29 Retaliator & Thunderhawk :)
I had a C64 and always wanted an Amiga after seeing the games in the magazines. But seeing F-18 made me determined to get (which I did) an A500. Played the heck out F-18. I remember Electronics Boutique in the mall had an Amiga (500 I think) set up on display in the store, running F-18.
Awesome game, havnt played it for about 15 years. I remember swapping it temporarily with a friend from school for 1 week for cannon fodder, and the bastard sold it.....never saw it again :0(
Commodore blew all its cash on stupid ideas and outright graft by its executives who demanded bonuses for their poor performance.
What could have made the Amiga great was proper expandability (RAM slots!), and better marketing. The gap between the A500 and the A2000 was too big pricewise, and Commodore took too long to upgrade the hardware in its models.
Yeh it's great to see that cockpit again after all these years; I really don't remember the graphics being this basic but hindsight comes with rose tinted glasses! Saying that I always much preferred the other one, I think it was Microprose M19 something, much more tactical than F-18 but two awesome games from the old days for sure.
...amazing..what graphics lacked back then was intensified bigtime by our own mind.. i played this game when is was 10 and still remember it vividly... those were great days in the beginning of gaming for me
@SlickWillieMcGoo But that's the thing though, the graphics for this game back then were mind blowing!! Sure our imagination played a big part but the Amiga was a graphics powerhouse and this had my jaw dragging on the floor when i first saw it running!
@ric84italy i have to agree...bucket loads of atmosphere and in that regard its never been equalled. Its only bad point is the relatively small amount of missions.
aCTUALLY THIS FLIGHT SIMULATOR WAS AVAILABLE BEFORE THE PLANES WERE PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE AND THE GAME WAS USED IN ACTUAL PILOT TRAINING. dAMON HILL PRACTICED RACING ON HIS AMIGA AS THE TRACKS HAD THE SAME SPECIFICS AS THE REAL RACING TRACKS!
I'm not this wasn't even meant too be a game! It was originally a flight sim, thats why it seems so boring they brought out a special control system like for plane sims and everything, the reason that amiga went bust was because everyone copied the games instead of buying them when the internet was born people would download the games before they were even released!
This is simply wrong. Where are you getting this? According to Bob Dinnerman (the guy who made the game), it was made on the request of some game developers he met at SIGGRAPH and he later signed a development agreement with Electronic Arts to complete this game. It was never meant to be a flight sim. The reason Commodore went bust was simply that they were unable (or unwilling) to develop new exciting hardware to keep up with the rest of the industry.
Firstly it may not have been this sim, it was a long time ago I owned an Amiga, but secondly Amiga was killed because of software piracy it wasn't worth a development team developing software for as before it was even released the software would have been leaked onto bulletin boards, I had a game 1 week before it was released anyware!(sorry Commodore), the Amiga was well ahead of it's time and was far and away the best home computer of it's time everyone else was playing catch up!
Piracy didn't kill it. At most it was a contributing factor. The main reason was mismanagement of the company which led to a lack of R&D and botched marketing. There is an enormous amount of piracy on the PC, yet that hasn't been a problem for the growth of the PC platform. You don't have to keep telling me how great the Amiga was because I know. I used to own one too :)
Whats R and D? Secoundly the pc industry is made up of lots of smaller companys, the piracy on the pc is dealt with better by means of not providing user support and software being harder to copy! Also the number of people who own a pc is much greater, so there will be bigger software sales anyway! Software is much cheaper and easier to develop, many factors I know, but piracy was the "biggie"! That and the fact there is no real rival most systems now can run most software!
This was a great game, it was nice that it had all the functions like hook, flares, afterburner, electronic disturb signal etc.
The music was great, but one thing that sucked was this wheel for entering the codes so you could play. Mine fell apart and it was hard to get the codes right to enter the game.
Ah, those were the days... Although it was only lots of polygons with not so many colors, it just rocked!
I used to shoot down the MiGs who tried to get Air Force One...and then I got bored and accidentally shot down Air Force One with my guns...whoops. Silly me!
An Amiga 2000 was my first computer and this was my first game, thanks for posting, brought back many memories.

My cousin, with whom I played this game during some summer vacation in the late 80s, actually became an F/A-18 pilot. Finland bought some in the 90s.
