In my formal logic class, we were told that medieval logician would use the letters "P" and "Q" as their symbols of choice. The expression, therefore, arose as professors demanded their students be diligent in accounting for all arguments pertinent for a particular proof.
I'm not from the UK, but I think p's stands for pounds (money).... if you are still talking about type writers, you might need to change your diapers.
When printing was done on a letterpress, the type was "set" as individual letters, put together one at a time to form words and sentences. The letters were stored in a special case with a section dedicated to each letter. The lower part of the case was dedicated to the small letters of the alphabet thus "lowercase" and the upper part of the case to capital letters thus "uppercase". The p and q were very similar and easily confused, only the position of a small notch distinguished the letter.
as far as i know, the pint and quarts are the most widely accepted, and the saying was a warnig to pub customers who might be cheated by paying for quarts but recieving pints once they were too intoxicated to know the difference. but as the lovely lady said, the true origin is indeed uncertain.
Youngmic, sorry you will be old soon too,it comes faster than you think! Your shell will not look like your younger self but your mind stays young! If someone was going to play the worst joke ever on you, this is it! You look in the mirror and know you can never go back and wish that you had appreciated your beauty a lot more back then. So appreciate who you are now because after 50 is as bad as they say. Once ur over the hill,ur to tired to climb back over! Still love you! xox :)
I'm 52 yrs.old, and when I was a kid if you went over your friends house, went to the store,or was going to meet a new friend of your mom's,your mother would say "Mind your P's and Q's!" meaning "behave yourself !"
I kind of like the french one - even if it isn't the correct origin of the expression.
I haven't heard the phrase "mind your p's and q's" before (english is not my main language), but it think it harmonates nicely with the expression of (not) committing a "social faux pas".
If it is to mean being at your best behaviour, then a couple of "dance instruction" to avoid behaving like a bull in a china shop.
Postrationalizing expressions is always all too easy ;-P
I think it comes from the days when typesetters selected individual letters from drawers to hand set type. A p and a q are very easily confused when you look at them individually.
What I learned is that bartenders often used the phrase to break up crowds watching a bar fight, by telling them to 'Mind your pints and quarts', and that this phrase evolved from that.
i was toldbar tenders telling there patrons to watch there drinks MIND YOUR PINS AND QUARTS when a fight broke out like watch your drinks dont spill em!!
I heard it slightly different. When a fight would break out, the bartender would tell the participants to mind their ps and qs meaning to pay attention to their beers instead of fighting.
In logic P's and Q's are used as common place holders (like X's and Y's in algebra). Mind your P's and Q's is an expression coming out of Universities in the scholastic period (since logic was pretty much the only thing in philosophy that they seriously studied) as instructors would often say this to their students. It's the logical equivalent to "dot your i's and cross your t's."
do you do fitness or something like that, if not your are dieting pretty good,i see it with your abdominal fat you cannot get lean like this without hard diet, or you have a incredible genetic. see you babye
pints and quarts but i really think is the true definition is said by my a commenter named Kbird23 "i heard pints and quarts. when people got to arguing at the bar the bartender would tell them to mind their p's and q's; to stop fighting and get back to their drinks." honestly.. think about it
That is such a pretty dress. I always thought it was because of the lowercase p and q looking alike, and having to make sure you don't mix them up when writing. I just always thought that made sense, even when I was little...
When I was in the 7th grade, I had a rare opportunity to take a semester of typesetting. Mr. Boyd, our teacher, told us that the P's and Q's saying referred to when you broke down your type block after printing, returning the lower-case individual type pieces to their proper storage box in the typesetters type rack. One also had to watch your lower-case B's and D's, but it was P's and Q's that caught on as a saying. Was Mr. Boyd correct? Well, I like to think so.

Tis not a big mystery for us Irish. My paternal grandmother explained the phrase was used in Ireland in the 19th century. "Mind your Ps and Qs" meant to mind your pints & quarts. It MIGHT have originated for barkeeps, but quickly became used to tell drinkers to watch their sobriety and/or language in pubs. A drink was a pint, a tall ale was a quart. Tis no blarney!
From an old printer's axiom. Back in the early days of printing presses, each line of text had to be set up one letter at a time. Since the letters in the press were reversed (so they'd print forward), the printmaker (or typographer) needed to be careful not to confuse one letter for the other.
Reminding someone to "watch his p's and q's" means to pay attention to the details.
"Minding your p's and q's" is no mystery at all.... its a term from logic. They will teach logic like this... "If p, then q", hence if not p, then not q", etc. Its a method of teaching logic that teaches the student to detect fallacies, like fallacy of denying the consequent, or fallacy of affirming the antecedent, etc. The "teacher" probably knows this, but is just being entertaining with her "theories", but I thought I'd point it out anyway.
How about this take on Ps & Qs? In the broadcast media from days of radio the pronouncing of any word beginning with a P could cause the microphone to "pop" so one needed to be mindful to soften the pronunciation of a P. Live broadcast media also relied heavily on timing so one had to pay attention not to miss one's cues.
Hold up. Mind your p is and q is? Incorrect apostrophe. Please check your grammar before talking about etymologies - the two actually go quite well together.
I like the bartender origin, makes sense if you're in a hurry that you might mix them up when it came to recording which was on someone's tab.I LOVE MARINA!!!
As for the bartender argument presented in the video, no bartender in his right mind would ever mix up a pint and a quart. The difference between such measurements is so vast, a quart (32 oz) is TWICE the size of a pint (16 oz), that only an inept bartender who had dipped into the ale one to many times would ever make that mistake.
i think she meant when they were keeping a tab not to mark quarts in pints column, not when actually pouring the beer.
That is if you even accept this explanation
The Logic guys make a good argument for the logic thing, but I discount this because the people who usually say mind your P's & Q's aren't usually mathematicians. It is a common saying and the common man explanation sounds the most likely, to me.
Mind your p's and q's actually comes from Aristotelean Logic. The original symbols used for representing premises would start at P and continue through the alphabet. It was a shorthand way to represent an argument as well as determine its validity, in deductive arguments, or strength, in inductive arguments.
P
If P then Q
if Q then R
if R then S
-----------
C: Therefore S.
Minding your p's and q's is simply keeping your argument, ideas, and actions in order.
This can be as simple as... If the grass is wet, it has rained. the grass is wet. ----------------- C: Therefore it has rained. or as odd as... If dinosaurs are purple then 2 and 2 is 6 If 2 and 2 is 6 then I am the king of France Dinosaurs are purple -------------------- C: Therefore, I am the king of France.
I'll go with the English Navy theory. Much of our slang came from the English Navy. The sailors ate off a square board with wood strip side. "a square meal" They were promised 3 squares a day.
Two of these are half right. Late 19th, early 20th Century, shipmasters had to cover tavern debts of crews in port. Port bartenders tallied pints/quarts by ship under P and Q. If sailors couldn't pay, the tavern collected from the ship.
So, officers releasing crews for liberty advised, "Mind your 'Ps' and 'Qs.'"
As a footnote, in Puget Sound today beer drinking inherently relates to sailing. Pints are just called "Pounders" 1(16oz), but smaller glassses are called "Schooners".
Well I prefer the typesetter theory. But many years ago I had heard the "pints and quarts" from my crazy 5th grade teacher who would also brag about her days as Catholic missionary in China. Her favorite song was "Cassions Go Rolling Along" It is strangely annoying to find she might have been right. About anything. She did NOT however at any time mention 'beer'.
None of the above. I believe it stands for products and quotients. Although "to Hot" can call itany way she wants as long as she keeps linguistically so well informed
At Anne Hathaway's Cottage in Victoria BC they say "ps and qs" came from "pints and quarts". They also explained such English phrases as "bum's rush", "chew the fat", and "sleep tight."
"...This regionalization is in keeping with the Tri-Lateral Plan which calls for a gradual convergence of East and West, ultimately leading toward the goal of "one world government'....National sovereignty is no longer a viable concept..." Zbigniew Brzezinski, National Security Advisor to President Jimmy Carter.
Its be alert (watch your dollar and food) and its east london talk. Big G style.

Sorry the correct way to represent the argument above is
If P then Q
if Q then R
if R then S
P is true
----------
C: Therefore S.

I thought bartenders in English pubs told that to their patrons when they were getting rowdy, to "mind their pints and quarts".

I thought that the origin came from people who used typewriters and often mixed the two letters while typing.

I like the pints and quarts theory, but I always thought it meant watch your alcohol consumption.

Well I've never heard the term before, but since I'm not american, I guess that's not so odd.
