I cry every time I hear it too. I heard Shuly sing this in a coffeehouse in a church basement in Richmond VA when I was an 18 year old college freshman in 1972. It never ceases to move me to tears.
@rpvee Idon't think anyone recorded it.. I remember it was St James Episcopal Church and they had a coffeehouse with live acoustic music for college students every weekend. I remember we ate falafel. I remember she was beautiful and this song was embedded in my soul. She also sang a beautiful folk song, Roger Whittaker's "New World In the Morning", the most beautiful version of that song I've ever heard. She was wonderful
@apsouthernchick That sounds so magical! I wish people would record things like that, it's a shame so many music treasures of history are lost to time.
Thank you so much for this video! You did an amazing job mixing the photos (which fit the lyrics perfectly) with all the clips of Shuly singing... I'm seriously impressed and everything flowed perfectly! That can't have been easy. I also love that you incorporated some of the iconic photos from Jerusalem's history, such as at 3:18. I can never hear this song without visualizing those images. I'm glad you went with Shuly's version. Other versions are great too but Shuly was the original.
@Nacha255 Thanks so much for your comment! It really means a lot. Indeed, Shuly's version is a classic. I actually met her one-on-one and heard her sing the song just a week ago today!!
@Nacha255 She is SO friendly! She was performing at a local gala that the gala runners let me attend just for the concert. They took me to her backstage room, introduced me, then LEFT, leaving the two of us literally alone. She asked me to sit down, we talked, I told her how much the song means to me... she was so, so friendly. And after the concert, she stayed around the gala crowd freely meeting with people, as if she wasn't famous at all. A genuine, kind soul, and very talented at that!
@rpvee OMG that's so cool! I was lucky enough to see her perform once but never anything as awesome as meeting her one-on-one. I'm so happy to hear she's so kind and unpretentious. I think she's amazingly talented and apparently an amazing person as well.
@rpvee A few years ago she performed at the Bible Lands museum in Jerusalem while I was on vacation there. She sang "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav" as well as several other songs. It was amazing, and I also bought a CD at the end.
@IamaZionistGoy Yes, Ofra Haza's version is wonderful. But I wanted to create something dedicated to the woman who brought us the song in the first place, thus this video.
Now is the time for a song for peace and fulfillment for all the people of Israel and the Middle East. We are all one.
