Actually it is a good thing...boggling happens when they are bruxing...Bruxing is them grinding down their teeth which never stop growing...The jaw is connected to muscles in the head which cause theyes to go in and out of the socket..It is a totally healthy and important part of being a rat...
i always thought my Toby was stressed when she did that! i thought she was grinding her teeth and i would always try to calm her down and tell her to stop grinding her teeth but the more i tried to soothe her the more she did it!
what's the difference between bruxing and boggling? i know bruxing is when they grind their teeth to make a chittering sound, my rat does it alot. but what is boggling?
It can happen while they are stressed too, but you are much more likely to see it when they are happy or relaxed. It's all about judging their mood really.
I had a pet rat in high school and it knew it's name and took orders like a dog. I would let it run around my bed and it would pick and clean my hair like I was one of them.
Thank you. He was a great pet. He got to be so good I could let him free roam and he would respond to his name when it was time to put him away. I miss him.
making a female have a litter does does do any good whatsoever, and it tends to make them worse anyways, especially if they are young. i had a girl who i bought from a petshop (before i knew better) who was pregnant and she was a bloody bitch after having her babies, still loved her though, shame it was not returned lol.
I know, I keep selling that point, but my parents are completely against it. I try to play with her as much as I can, but she really seems to hate fingers and fingertips. She just bit me so hard I bled like a stuck pig and heard a crunch. Do you have any ideas of how to fix this behaviour?
I had also female rat with this behaviour, somebody told me to try let her give birth, sometimes it helps, sometimes not. If even this didn't help then it is hopeless, she will never change her mind. I have scars on my fingers now, and she is dead :(. Sometimes it happens and you can't change it... you have her from baby or you got her grown-up? (sorry for my english)
When rats are comfortable with you they don't bite, they are very affectionate! you'll have to teach her that hands = friends! I suggest spending at LEAST an hour with her a day, or more if you can. Just leave your hand in the cage for a while, she'll get curious and check it out. Food rewards are a very good idea because rats respond very well to them. The more you interact with your rat the more she'll become relaxed with you and hopefully the nipping will stop :D
