Saanwal (means one with a brownish, fair complexion: a term of endearment -- typically for a Baluch man, having come down from highlands, and going back with his "daachi" -- she-camel); mor muhaaraan (trurn back the reins); tati (in scorching heat) ro, ro (crying, crying) waat guzaaran (I see the pathway longingly). The woman (in the plains) singing out to her beloved Baluch: O my fair (handsome) one, [do not leave] yet; turn back the reins [of your camel]. Can't really be translated :)
ustaad ji's range, feeling, expression, depth, and the total mastery of 'surs' is a feat one can never have enough of........it's a transcendental experience.....a spiritual ride on an emotionally charged roller coaster, astride all octaves and even beyond......love u ustaad ji.......only wish that giants like him keep on coming for our future generations....heaven forbid if we happen to be the last lucky ones to have witnessed such greatness....long live ustaad ji...
everything he said was fully in crisp and clear surrr... i know i am no one to say about this great singer but thats the i show love and respect toward his art.....
i have no for praying for such a legend because he is beyond our words and Allah gave him a beutifull and sureely voice.may ALLAH bless him and rest in peace.

What Einstein is to Physics, Ustad Salmat Ali Khan (It pains me to even think that he is no more and the word of Ustad seems to be small for him) is to Classical Music. Light years ahead of his time. I still remember seeing him perform at the 3rd death anniversary of Tabla Nawaz, Ustad Shaukat Hussain Khan Sb (Another legend in his own rite) along with his son Shafqat Ali Khan (Who is now a fully grown ustad himself now) and i had an out of body experience. I am so proud I listened to him live.
Kyaa baat hai ive heard this raag by the lengendary ustad salamat ali khan - sindhi bhairavi several times and i have never got bored of this! Truly amazing... My ustadji is sitting in the audience too himself who is the world reknowned tabla player ustad tari khan sahib ji sitting next to him is ghulam ali and in thia video my ustadji's mother is in the audience aswell and vaah ustad miyaan shaukat hussain on the tabla along with ustad salamat ali khan... What a beautiful mehfil... You know th
These are the notes and sound that stir me deep inside, causing a pain and torment that my soul starts fluttering to leave my body. I wish his son would know what his father was!
Kyaa Baat Hai! Ustad Salamat Ali Khan is spectacular and I must say Ustad Miyan Shaukat Hussain Khan is phenomenal. He keeps the serenity by playing theka very simple, then he politely and appropriately interjects his Laagis without drowning the creativity of Ustad Salamat Ji. Kyaa Baat!
thaats = concept of raag's origin & emanation, whereas tabla's sangat & theka, gat etc originates from essentially peshkara, qaidah based, of course, on gharana's regional styles. Raagas are stricltly accompanied with dhurat bilampat and relas with tehai's etc unlike
kaffi sufi kalam singing e.g this one is in sindhi bhainravi shakal, so the
theka can carry some variations including keherwa, aik taal, with swari
even jhaptal or bhajan theka as u have said earlier.
He is the legend of the legends .simlply the most skilled singer ever lived on this planet.you can research as much as you like but you wouldnt find another salamat ali khan RIP.
Matchless singer in this era. All the singers need to sing in search of beat but beat need to search Ustad Salamat Ali khan sb . I listened him many times and met him a great human a great performer and perfectionist and for me a greatest singer of this era. i have never listened so pure and so sweet voice in my life.He has sung almost 50 kafis this is one of those a master piece fabulous .
Ustad Salamat was a great legend. His ancesters defeated Tan San two times. His death is a great loss for Pakistan but his songs will remain alive forever. Bundle of thanks to ustad Salamat.
Nahi suna aisa kabhi gaana. every time I listen it brings tears in my eyes and goes in to meditation and do not know what happens to me. Later Rafi and suman Kalyanpur sang on same raaga "Ajhun naa aaye baalmaa saawan beeta jaye.but again no comaparasison to khan saheb. Thans msab for the great video.
We are not going to have any such of these legends again. It just reminds me of several occasions when I had a chance to listen Ustad Salamat Ali Khan for hours during 1982 to 1992. He was a 'real perfectionist' as he once said about Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (marhoom, Sitar nawaz-pindi waley) while performing at Liaqat Hall-Rawalpindi on his barsi. He said, Ustad Fateh Ali "bohat Sureelay aur behtareen Laey Kaar tthey". In fact he himself was too. May Allah bless him!
antariks, gulam ali used to be a frequent fixture of the audience of PTV. incidentally ustad salamat ali considered gulam ali to be a lowly beginner in the field of music so only reluctantly allowed him to sing in his presence.there is one reported incidence when chhote gulam ali khan saheb requested ustad salamat ali to let his namesake gulam ali to sing in a mehfil.
@drnavinsingh You are right and this tells you how much of a perfectionist was Ustad Jee. Picasso of Classical Music, I wont even hesitate to call him Van Gough too.

main classical mausiqui ka dildada hoon, salamat ali khan saab ko keya hindu keya muslim sab suntey hain,un ka khaas muqaam hey... muslmaano ki mausiqui rooh ko hila kar rakh deti hey.. is main aik khaas jazbeyat aur unseyat ka rang hey... is ke bar aks,, hindu (classical) mausiqui main wo rachaao , rung aur mazaa nahi hey.. muslim Mousiqui ka ta'alaq rooh aur tasawwaf se zayaada gahra hey..aur is main nikhaar bhi is leye hey.. jabke hindu mausiqui main yeh bohut kum milta hey...
for your kind information, there is nothing like muslim mausiqui and hindu mausiqui... it is hindustani classical music, whose roots lie in Samaveda.. according to the Dagar brothers-Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar & Ustad Nasir Moinuddin Dagar... and most musicians believe in the religion of music, not hinudu/muslim...
First of all no one is perfect except God and no one and nothing is beyond criticism except His Prophets.
Listeners have every right to appreciate and criticise.
satyaesh.. I think some of the lyrics though sung by many legends yet are best delivered by One. I think Sanwal moor muharan..by ustd.slamat is unsurpassed.
I'm a Muslim but I believe that being a Hindu (if you are) you r better qualified to comment and criticise on classical music because it's a part of your faith system.
Every Gharana has some speciality, Patiala is known for there fast and powerful taans, patiala singer were great and had a royal feel in their singing, however sham chaurasi's beauty is the fludily of singing sharp and flat note i a way that they dont sound bad, shaam chaurasi is the master of kafi style, also there pieces in raga pahari are amazing :) salamat ali khan was an amazing singer and so is ustad fateh ali khan both are ver different in singing styles
I agree with Satyasheelrawal, that every one is entitled to his or her opinion but they Sham Ch.G may have good technique but lack the class of Ustad Fateh Ali Khan and Ustad Amanat Ali Khan.
I think we should listen to same kalam by Pathanay Khan or Zahida Parvin if you really want to enjoy Kofi and in my opinion he is the only one who sings like this and his son does even NFAK didn't try to kill the spirit of this music by imbeding it in ragaas unnecessarily and it is not a Hindu Muslim thing.
You do not become great by being related to someone. Although I doubt it very much if the two families were related. And as to Ust Salamat Ali Khan being great, did I ever doubt that? He was in his own way. I am merely pointing out my differences to his way of relating to spirituality and the sacred texts of the Sufis. Whats wrong in that and why get so hurt?
You may be right but that's me and I believe that despite many astounding qualities, his music and that of Sham Chaurasi lacks in reposefulness! In fact it isn't just the latter half of the group of musicians I have mentioned here who liked Ustad Salamat Ali Khan's music. As for as I know even Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali held an approving view as indeed did Ustad Vilayat Khan and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.
Whereas it is right that I am a Hindu, it is equally right that amongst my all time favorites are: 1) Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan 2) Ustad Faiyaz Khan 3) Ustad Amir Khan 4) Ustad Vilayat Khan 5) Ustad Ali Akbar Khan 6) Ustad Amjad Ali Khan 7) Ustad Imrat Khan 8) Ustad Fahim Rahimuddin Dagar 9) Ustad Moiuddin Dagar 10) Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan 11) Tufail Niazi Saab 12) Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali 13) Pathane Khan 14) Shaukat Ali 15) Zahoor Saeen 16) Sharif Ghaznavi 17) Ustad Ghulam Hussain Shaggan...
the latter half of the artists you mentioned praised Ustad Salamat ali Khan. You honestly just proved you have not understood the beauty of Khan Sahibs Music. May god shed some light on you.
hindu teri is liyay jalti hai ustad musalmaan hai. Aur tum hinduoon main aaj tak na koi ustad jaisa paida hua nahi ho ga......so chal salay hindu uchal zor say.teri aisay hi jalti rahai gi.
BTW if you go back into Ustad Salamat Ali's lineage, you will discover to your dismay that the family of the Ustad was a HINDU family. Originally. So what does it prove? That they were miserable singers while they were Hindus and became extraordinary singers the day they converted to Islam? Singing has nothing whatsoever to do with what religion you profess in private life. It has to do with how evolved a soul one is.
aap kay paas koi degree nahi kay aap ustaad salamat khan ko rating dai sakain....ok...is liyay aap kay liyay accha yehi rahai ga kay aap chup rahain kyoon kay bagair kisi degree ya bagair kuch show kiyay kisi legend ((((yani jisay duniya legend samjhti hai aap nahi))) par ungli uthana deewana pan hai.

Shafqat is an unbelievably mediocre singer. He too, like his father, sings semi-classical stuff. Classical music Sham Chaurasi ke bas ki baat nahin hai.
why dont you send me your email though a private message, and I will show you what shamachaurasi gharana is possible of, Im glad that you don't know yet. Soon enough you shall realize what you have been missing out on.
Dont worry bro this prick is hindu .Aur is hindu say bardasht nahi ho raha kay ,in kay mazhab main gaiki honay kay baawajood ustaad sab hindoon say aagay hai. balkay koi bhi hindu gaik ustad kay peeron ki khaak bhi nahi.Bas isi wajja say yeh hindu aisay likhta hai. warna pata isay bhi hai kay ustad ki barabri koi nahi kar sakta.
Salamat Ali Khan saheb was a treasure that few Pakistanis appreciated.
Now Shafqat Ali Khan is following in his footsteps. He is another shining start in the making. I pray that he will have more admirers who are actually able to come forward to support him.
msab73 aik baar phir aapko ko duain.yeh main 200vin baar daikh aur sun raha hoon.waha yaar kamal hai.Yaar aajkal kay logon ko pata nahi kya ho gaya hai pop suntay hai.wahid classical ki field hai to taraki ki bajai tanazul ki taraf ja rahi hai.Jis ki wajja log hain.
watch / listen @ 2:24 - 2:40 oops! he just rocked! What clarity and dexterity.msab73, do you have the full video recording of this. thanks for a great share.
this has become my favorite ..actually lots of thanks to msab73... i've been listening ustad salamat ali-nazaqat ali saheb for many years..now actually watching him sing is a privilege .
One of the best vocalist of this century. One trait that sets Ustad Salamat ali khan apart from rest of his contemporaries is the quality of " Laykari". He was a master of rhythm. He use to sing in the most difficult rhythmic cycles.
Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, the unrivaled and untouchable king of sur. The don hailing from Sham Chaurasi exhibits only an atoms worth of magic from his closet, Rab khair karey, imagine what would happen if he ever decided to unleash a bit more...Every sur he touches in this piece and the manner in which he does so is worthy of occupying a throne of its own in the kingdoms of music...
Fateh ali khan saab and amanat ali khan saab are also there...the singing is nothing special but the explanation of the philosophy of multani kafi is gr8.....In fact this is plain punjabi harkat ras...very ordinary.....though in general Ustad Salamat (and Nazakat both) were gr8 exponents of harkat ras which is being now copied by Parveen Sultana
My friend hammerguy...see the point is that hindustani classical is not all about harkat....salamat ali khansaab has sung this song to show is vocal prowess more than to bring out the nuances of the raaga....hindustani classical is more about bhaavras....especially thumri or such lighter classical forms....you must listen to bade ghulam ali khan saab....and more over have you listened to salamat ali khan saab's classical renditions...in terms of vocal prowess they are 100 times better
My freind this is Kafi which is a different form of music alltogether which has its roots in folk. Ustad salamat ali khan was a pioneer in the genre for he flowered the lines of the kafi with raag ras technique. How do you know he is'nt getting the inspiration from the words. I too have seen Salmat ali khan in better raag form. But my friend you have to understand Raaga isn't the most important aspect in Kafi singing. It is the kafi that is the most important aspect in Kafi Singing.
you say "salamat ali khansaab has sung this...." This has been the style of Kafi singing forever the words must be sang with as much beauty as you sing them, Again the Raga is secondary to the words, you must make yourself more familiar with this style, it is comparable to bhajans, qawallis, shabads. The inspiratins does not come from the raag but the words. I disargree with you on all accounts this is by far the greatest expression through kafi I have heard.
You talk about sur....in terms of the purity of sur...why am i trying to convince you?shit this is a wastage of time....you want sur? ok...listen to ustad abdul karim khaan saab...especially his thumri in mishra tilang "sajan tum kaheko neha lagaye"...you want more sur? listen to faiyaz khan saab's lalit....do you even know that lalit has two komal rishabhs...atikomal and anuchcha komal....ustad faiyaaz khaan saab used the notes in taankari in halak taan's my friend...
You dont need to bring any other masters into this, I dont see the masters you mentioned with a very different eye then I see ustad Salmat ali khan, You dont need to inform me of their genius. Ustad salamat ali khan is comparable to all the classical greats, they all have their own andaz, and we can sit here and argue which is better but we can leave that for you or the musicologists, I just enjoy brilliant music, and moreover ustad salamat ali khans pioneering andaz.
I am more interested in beauty, and this music offers one a look into the brilliant thoughts of indian classical saints, and the beautiful sochni of the elder masters who have passed their wisdom on. I understand that all these technicalities are important, but in my opinion ustad salmat ali khan delivered a masterpeice here. I think you need to explain your definition of music to me first before we can have any further discussion. No offense taken.
Dost..Do not take me wrongly. You actually hit the nail on the head.I appreciate a different facet of music. But please, ask any really knowledgeable person and they will tell you that the greatest exponent of bhaavras ever..and i mean ever was Ustaad Abdul Karim Khan..You have not heard him i suppose to try and put Ustaad Salamat Ali Khan saab with him at the same seat.Please.Listen to Karim Khan Saab.Let me see.Are you available on gtalk. The problem is that the pieces i have are all LPrecords.
I have heard of Ustad Abdul Karim khan, I have many records of his aswell. He was a giant, and I agree he was one of the greatest exponents of bhaavras. But what I am saying is all gayaks paint with different paintbrushes, and I justly see the beauty in all paint brushes, of mostly all the great masters. By no means was Ustad salamat ali khan's paintbrush or gayaki of any less quality that Ustad abdul Karim Khans, you can disagree all you want.
I congratulate that artist, who expresses himself with sincerity, and sincerity does not have to be in question, if the musician uses techinicalities. It is about the beauty that is presented through the emphasis in the sound. An artist has a license which allows him to define and emphasize his thoughts through whatever technicalities he may be able to express the thought through.
Karim khan saab's sur was the greatest ever...Please do not put Salamat ali saab with him on the same seat...Even khaansaab himself would've been embarrassed by it.And by no means am i saying that salamat ali khaan saab was a poor singer.I mean who the fuck am i to say that. But i just meant that if you listen to other thumris in bhairavi by say Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali khan Saab, then you and anybody who has listned to classical music would say that it was nothing out of this world kind.
brother again you continue to talk about seats, who are we to put anyone in seats. Music to me is about sincerity, art to me is about sincerity. Unfortunately we cannot be the judge of such a thing, it is only he who is the knower of all hearts that can be the judge of such a thing. All we can see is the love put fourth by an artist to understand even .000000000001% of what this music means. I have love for even a child who trys to sing in taal and sur.
It is the music that is truly living and never dies, and is most beautiful. Artists come and go, it is the art that lives on forever. I love all these artists you have mentioned too, but it is the music that has made them gold. Again we are no one to put anyone in seats, lets just love anyone who feels the depth of the ocean of raag sangeet, they are all worth it.
I honestly can say that I do enjoy listening to Ustad Abdul karim Khan's Bhaavraas, but I can honestly also say that I enjoy Ustad Salamat ali khan's vocal organ more. He had a more full voice than Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, and his paintbrush which was was his throat had more overtones. They were both beautiful though.
Ok man hands up because this is not going anywhere. It is just that you extract a different ras from music than me...i'll share a secret with you...i am a mathematician and hence appreciate the technicalities a bit more maybe...but no offenses...especially my last message was over the top and disgracefully rude..but honestly you must have only heard karim khan saab from his last days' records. There is no comparison. He was called the Tansen of modern times.
Brother its ok I don't mind if you were rude, you love Indian classical music, for me that was more than joy to witness. It doesn't matter what you said and what you didnt, just the fact that you love indian classical music so much, made my day.
I had to look up the definition, I have no virtues at all my friend. I dont have orkut, nor any other social network, I never felt like they are something worthy of participation. I take no joy in useless social networks, even though I hear they can be useful.
mr patbusy you are digrace if you can't do a better performance then this youself, please let me hear you sing a multani kafi, and let all judge what is "ordinary" and not. I think you have got overly excited thinking you are some kind of musicologist to be criticize Ustad salamat ali khan.
Come on do not make it a personal fight....first of all who the hell told you that you need to be able to sing as good to analyse music...the greatest ever musicologist in the history of the subcontinent was Pndt. Bhatkhande...i am sure that he could not impress your great sense of aesthetics with his singing....the point is that what you find very unique i do not find as unique...i said that it was good but nothing extraordinary....and you talk about sur...
You want to analyze, analyze his laikari in this presentation, analyze his expression giving even more depth to his unmatchable laikari, and then analyze depth of the feeling he had reciting Khawaja Ghulam farid's kafi, then anlayze the perfection of the sur painting the words of the kafi into your soul. Are you watching the same video?, are you delirious?.
See, if you are saying that this is the greatest multani kaafi you have ever heard i must take it on your face value. But i am really analysing it in terms of a type of thumri and the various aspects that you expect in a thumri.Bol-baant,chalan,bhaav etc. And beauty of expressions is not the same for you and me.But if you ask me,and i have heard a lot of classical music, the greatest virtue of salamat ali khaan saab was taankari and that is it.Ald'best. Excuse me if i have offended you personally.
My freind you can be as techincal as you want, you can take it to the core where all music just become is mathematics. That is what musicologists are so great at, breaking a piece down to where theres nothing left in it, they completely strip the soul out of the music.
I am no musicologist.I sing classical myself and belong to a musical family as i said.I mean nothing bad.The point is that for me, music should primarily be technically astute and simultaneously beautiful and not a place to show your vocal prowess. That is why Ustaad Faiyaaz Khan Saab was the greatest singer ever.Because he sung without doing vocal gymnastics.I mean do you really think that music is all about reaching the tough notes easily. Then ustad aashiq ali khan saab was the greatest ever.
No I dont think that music is about reaching tough notes easily, that just sounds more techinal then anything. I just finished telling you that music for me is about love. And about the beauty of thoughts. I could care less for technicalities aswell but see an artist may choose just as a poet can to use very difficult words and difficult analogys in his poetry, the same way a gayak may choose to express his idea or lay emphasis on an idea through use of very technical sound.
In fact for me no thumri can even come close to Bade Ghulam ali khan saab's aaye na balam in terms of expression and no thumri more beautiful than Karim Khan saab's sajan tum kaheko.
I respect both artists as amongst the greatest masters, but you have to believe me when I say Ustad Slamat Ali khans Andaz shines amongst Raagis, it is evergeen like all the great masters you have mentioned.
bienvenido compadre al mundo magico de combinacion de musica mistica y raaga.
Ustad Salamat Ali Khan Sb. was undoubtedly a maestro of classical music, but the justice he has done to the poetry of Khwaja Ghulam Fareed sb. is absolutely amazing
yes ustad ghulam ali khan sahab is in the audience, and sitting beside him is ustad tari khan sahab. i believe ustad fateh ali khan sahab is also in the audience sitting on a chair.
Thank you so much msab73.This youtube is probably the best thing since sliced bread. Being from India I had a hard time getting even audio records for these great Ustads from Pakistan ,now I can even watch them in their prime thanks to people like you who post these videos.
is that ustad fateh ali khan of patiala gharana at 3.22. any way a true classic multani kaafi. welldone msab73. please upload more of khan sahabs pieces. god bless u.

thaats = concept of raag's origin & emanation, whereas tabla's sangat & theka, gat etc originates from essentially peshkara, qaidah based, of course, on gharana's regional styles.

May Allah bless him!

antariks, gulam ali used to be a frequent fixture of the audience of PTV. incidentally ustad salamat ali considered gulam ali to be a lowly beginner in the field of music so only reluctantly allowed him to sing in his presence.there is one reported incidence when chhote gulam ali khan saheb requested ustad salamat ali to let his namesake gulam ali to sing in a mehfil.

for your kind information, there is nothing like muslim mausiqui and hindu mausiqui... it is hindustani classical music, whose roots lie in Samaveda.. according to the Dagar brothers-Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar & Ustad Nasir Moinuddin Dagar... and most musicians believe in the religion of music, not hinudu/muslim...

Every Gharana has some speciality, Patiala is known for there fast and powerful taans, patiala singer were great and had a royal feel in their singing, however sham chaurasi's beauty is the fludily of singing sharp and flat note i a way that they dont sound bad, shaam chaurasi is the master of kafi style, also there pieces in raga pahari are amazing :) salamat ali khan was an amazing singer and so is ustad fateh ali khan both are ver different in singing styles
aakfan 2 years ago

Satyasheelrawal 3 years ago
You may be right but that's me and I believe that despite many astounding qualities, his music and that of Sham Chaurasi lacks in reposefulness! In fact it isn't just the latter half of the group of musicians I have mentioned here who liked Ustad Salamat Ali Khan's music. As for as I know even Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali held an approving view as indeed did Ustad Vilayat Khan and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan.

ShahSher 3 years ago 9
Fateh ali khan saab and amanat ali khan saab are also there...the singing is nothing special but the explanation of the philosophy of multani kafi is gr8.....In fact this is plain punjabi harkat ras...very ordinary.....though in general Ustad Salamat (and Nazakat both) were gr8 exponents of harkat ras which is being now copied by Parveen Sultana
patbusy 3 years ago
How is this singing nothing special?
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
My friend hammerguy...see the point is that hindustani classical is not all about harkat....salamat ali khansaab has sung this song to show is vocal prowess more than to bring out the nuances of the raaga....hindustani classical is more about bhaavras....especially thumri or such lighter classical forms....you must listen to bade ghulam ali khan saab....and more over have you listened to salamat ali khan saab's classical renditions...in terms of vocal prowess they are 100 times better
patbusy 3 years ago
My freind this is Kafi which is a different form of music alltogether which has its roots in folk. Ustad salamat ali khan was a pioneer in the genre for he flowered the lines of the kafi with raag ras technique. How do you know he is'nt getting the inspiration from the words. I too have seen Salmat ali khan in better raag form. But my friend you have to understand Raaga isn't the most important aspect in Kafi singing. It is the kafi that is the most important aspect in Kafi Singing.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
you say "salamat ali khansaab has sung this...." This has been the style of Kafi singing forever the words must be sang with as much beauty as you sing them, Again the Raga is secondary to the words, you must make yourself more familiar with this style, it is comparable to bhajans, qawallis, shabads. The inspiratins does not come from the raag but the words. I disargree with you on all accounts this is by far the greatest expression through kafi I have heard.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
You talk about sur....in terms of the purity of sur...why am i trying to convince you?shit this is a wastage of time....you want sur? ok...listen to ustad abdul karim khaan saab...especially his thumri in mishra tilang "sajan tum kaheko neha lagaye"...you want more sur? listen to faiyaz khan saab's lalit....do you even know that lalit has two komal rishabhs...atikomal and anuchcha komal....ustad faiyaaz khaan saab used the notes in taankari in halak taan's my friend...
patbusy 3 years ago
You dont need to bring any other masters into this, I dont see the masters you mentioned with a very different eye then I see ustad Salmat ali khan, You dont need to inform me of their genius. Ustad salamat ali khan is comparable to all the classical greats, they all have their own andaz, and we can sit here and argue which is better but we can leave that for you or the musicologists, I just enjoy brilliant music, and moreover ustad salamat ali khans pioneering andaz.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
I am more interested in beauty, and this music offers one a look into the brilliant thoughts of indian classical saints, and the beautiful sochni of the elder masters who have passed their wisdom on. I understand that all these technicalities are important, but in my opinion ustad salmat ali khan delivered a masterpeice here. I think you need to explain your definition of music to me first before we can have any further discussion. No offense taken.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
Dost..Do not take me wrongly. You actually hit the nail on the head.I appreciate a different facet of music. But please, ask any really knowledgeable person and they will tell you that the greatest exponent of bhaavras ever..and i mean ever was Ustaad Abdul Karim Khan..You have not heard him i suppose to try and put Ustaad Salamat Ali Khan saab with him at the same seat.Please.Listen to Karim Khan Saab.Let me see.Are you available on gtalk. The problem is that the pieces i have are all LPrecords.
patbusy 3 years ago
I have heard of Ustad Abdul Karim khan, I have many records of his aswell. He was a giant, and I agree he was one of the greatest exponents of bhaavras. But what I am saying is all gayaks paint with different paintbrushes, and I justly see the beauty in all paint brushes, of mostly all the great masters. By no means was Ustad salamat ali khan's paintbrush or gayaki of any less quality that Ustad abdul Karim Khans, you can disagree all you want.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
I congratulate that artist, who expresses himself with sincerity, and sincerity does not have to be in question, if the musician uses techinicalities. It is about the beauty that is presented through the emphasis in the sound. An artist has a license which allows him to define and emphasize his thoughts through whatever technicalities he may be able to express the thought through.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
Karim khan saab's sur was the greatest ever...Please do not put Salamat ali saab with him on the same seat...Even khaansaab himself would've been embarrassed by it.And by no means am i saying that salamat ali khaan saab was a poor singer.I mean who the fuck am i to say that. But i just meant that if you listen to other thumris in bhairavi by say Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali khan Saab, then you and anybody who has listned to classical music would say that it was nothing out of this world kind.
patbusy 3 years ago
brother again you continue to talk about seats, who are we to put anyone in seats. Music to me is about sincerity, art to me is about sincerity. Unfortunately we cannot be the judge of such a thing, it is only he who is the knower of all hearts that can be the judge of such a thing. All we can see is the love put fourth by an artist to understand even .000000000001% of what this music means. I have love for even a child who trys to sing in taal and sur.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
It is the music that is truly living and never dies, and is most beautiful. Artists come and go, it is the art that lives on forever. I love all these artists you have mentioned too, but it is the music that has made them gold. Again we are no one to put anyone in seats, lets just love anyone who feels the depth of the ocean of raag sangeet, they are all worth it.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
I honestly can say that I do enjoy listening to Ustad Abdul karim Khan's Bhaavraas, but I can honestly also say that I enjoy Ustad Salamat ali khan's vocal organ more. He had a more full voice than Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, and his paintbrush which was was his throat had more overtones. They were both beautiful though.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
Ok man hands up because this is not going anywhere. It is just that you extract a different ras from music than me...i'll share a secret with you...i am a mathematician and hence appreciate the technicalities a bit more maybe...but no offenses...especially my last message was over the top and disgracefully rude..but honestly you must have only heard karim khan saab from his last days' records. There is no comparison. He was called the Tansen of modern times.
patbusy 3 years ago
Brother its ok I don't mind if you were rude, you love Indian classical music, for me that was more than joy to witness. It doesn't matter what you said and what you didnt, just the fact that you love indian classical music so much, made my day.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
That is truly magnanimous of you...Are you on Orkut?
patbusy 3 years ago
I had to look up the definition, I have no virtues at all my friend. I dont have orkut, nor any other social network, I never felt like they are something worthy of participation. I take no joy in useless social networks, even though I hear they can be useful.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
mr patbusy you are digrace if you can't do a better performance then this youself, please let me hear you sing a multani kafi, and let all judge what is "ordinary" and not. I think you have got overly excited thinking you are some kind of musicologist to be criticize Ustad salamat ali khan.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
Come on do not make it a personal fight....first of all who the hell told you that you need to be able to sing as good to analyse music...the greatest ever musicologist in the history of the subcontinent was Pndt. Bhatkhande...i am sure that he could not impress your great sense of aesthetics with his singing....the point is that what you find very unique i do not find as unique...i said that it was good but nothing extraordinary....and you talk about sur...
patbusy 3 years ago
if this music cant effect you or your musicologists, I dont know what sublime world you belong too, in fact you may just be a deity yourself.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
You want to analyze, analyze his laikari in this presentation, analyze his expression giving even more depth to his unmatchable laikari, and then analyze depth of the feeling he had reciting Khawaja Ghulam farid's kafi, then anlayze the perfection of the sur painting the words of the kafi into your soul. Are you watching the same video?, are you delirious?.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
See, if you are saying that this is the greatest multani kaafi you have ever heard i must take it on your face value. But i am really analysing it in terms of a type of thumri and the various aspects that you expect in a thumri.Bol-baant,chalan,bhaav etc. And beauty of expressions is not the same for you and me.But if you ask me,and i have heard a lot of classical music, the greatest virtue of salamat ali khaan saab was taankari and that is it.Ald'best. Excuse me if i have offended you personally.
patbusy 3 years ago
My freind you can be as techincal as you want, you can take it to the core where all music just become is mathematics. That is what musicologists are so great at, breaking a piece down to where theres nothing left in it, they completely strip the soul out of the music.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
I am no musicologist.I sing classical myself and belong to a musical family as i said.I mean nothing bad.The point is that for me, music should primarily be technically astute and simultaneously beautiful and not a place to show your vocal prowess. That is why Ustaad Faiyaaz Khan Saab was the greatest singer ever.Because he sung without doing vocal gymnastics.I mean do you really think that music is all about reaching the tough notes easily. Then ustad aashiq ali khan saab was the greatest ever.
patbusy 3 years ago
No I dont think that music is about reaching tough notes easily, that just sounds more techinal then anything. I just finished telling you that music for me is about love. And about the beauty of thoughts. I could care less for technicalities aswell but see an artist may choose just as a poet can to use very difficult words and difficult analogys in his poetry, the same way a gayak may choose to express his idea or lay emphasis on an idea through use of very technical sound.
hammerguy1512 3 years ago
In fact for me no thumri can even come close to Bade Ghulam ali khan saab's aaye na balam in terms of expression and no thumri more beautiful than Karim Khan saab's sajan tum kaheko.
patbusy 3 years ago
I respect both artists as amongst the greatest masters, but you have to believe me when I say Ustad Slamat Ali khans Andaz shines amongst Raagis, it is evergeen like all the great masters you have mentioned.

Thank you so much msab73.This youtube is probably the best thing since sliced bread. Being from India I had a hard time getting even audio records for these great Ustads from Pakistan ,now I can even watch them in their prime thanks to people like you who post these videos.
