I think modern architecture would go a lot faster than that. Consider the abandoned wash house in Byrnesville, Pennsylvania USA - the walls are still sturdy, yet the roof is half caved in, and thats after less than 20 years of abandonment. There are plenty of other examples.
Yeah, I wonder how long a standard European house would last. I have seen lots of rotting abandoned houses in the US, but I've never seen a European building coming that much apart.
this is a good idea.. but alot of it is incorrect and the process would be faster. although you were right about the natural causes, you forgot about the affects of the inadiment objects and the chemicals. wouldnt the pipes blow up from some natural cause? would the water supply flood out?

Bad science, very amateurish, and structurally speaking, utterly bass-ackwards. Perhaps the little greenie-wannabes who drew this could take a few courses at the vo-tech on how building materials actually FUNCTION, before they go presuming as to how they ROT. Could've been much more effective if they'd done any actual RESEARCH. And it wouldn't take half as long as they presume, that's the pity.
I don't think the author will say this is the point he's trying to make; however, I believe he's implying that mankind shouldn't tamper with nature or that the world would be better of without us, and that very little from humans really matters. I'm not talking religion, just facts: God created us for a purpose, and we are supposed to have dominion over the whole earth, not the other way around.
You made me laughing. You AREN'T talking about religion? Does your god want us to destroy the world with our f*cking chemicals and everything? The Earth would be a perfect paradise without us!
I suspect this video is massively optimistic. There was a cute little empty house in the country where I lived in the late 70s. Over 25 years I watched it go from renovatable to just a chimney standing, with no help from anyone except Mom Nature. The last time I went past, all there was was a hole with a collapsed mess in it.
even painted pipes rust so much quicker than this. This person never grew up in the country around abandoned houses. THe internal metal stuff decays while the walls still stand. It's only the big old mansions / institutions that have stuff inside that holds out.
Framkly I am more concerned about the stuff we do leave behind, than about the stuff that would disappear.
Although appearantly a lot of people have this inexplicable need to leave something behind after they die, I don't think the influence human kind has on earth is anything to be proud of.
The only thing I find hopeful about the whole issue is the fact that nature will always find its way back, even after mankind's reign over the earth.
I don't know about anyone else, but I find the video very hopeful. Even after hundreds of years, there would still be evidence of our existence. If all humans disappeared, we'd still leave some of ourselves behind.
I've always wondered what it would be like if we were not here. Anyway, I'm reading the book right now, and I find the book interesting, yet incredibly depressing.
Never in my life have I wondered what the world would be like without us or before us. This book was interesting and thought provoking, but, like you said, depressing at the same time.
Ok, people.... you obviosly don't get it. If all humans were to suddenly vanish.... we would not be here to care for any thing. Then things would begin to rott, crumble and vegetation would begin to grow. The man who made this video is writing a book. He has done tons of research on the subject. The book is calle d" The world wth out us ". So, he obviously knew what he was thinking when he made this video.
This dude is obviously a planet of the apes fan, Or Blue Oyster Cult fan(HISTORY SHOWS AGAIN AND AGAIN HOW NATURE POINTS OUT THE FALLING OF MAN, "GODZILLA")!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is one of the most uneducated videos I have seen in a while. So, just let me understand. If it rains then gets hot and rains again our current world will be destroyed in less than 100 years... So tell me then wizard of the future, what about 80 story structures.
Fascinating, excellent! I have often thought about this subject, especially when contemplating ruins that are hundreds and even thousands of years old.

There was an error. The House wouldnt last for 200 years considering skyscrapers dont last that long unnatended.

It's not a "how to" film.
It's a broad expression of the views proposed in the book.
Stuff decays when humans don't repair it. That's the point.

A representation of the Buddhist idea of physical impermanence. "Existence" is dependent on many factors (causes & conditions).

One question:
What would happen to farm animals? I believe they would miss us, but i have some vegan friends that just wont believe that.

I suspect that almost everything mankind created would be gone without a trace in a few thousand years...back into the earth where it came from.
Don't forget...human beings WILL DEFINITELY become extinct at some time. Definitely.

Why are the trees the same size after 240 odd years?
As was said by others, it would be far far quicker than that.
And it needs a narration so we know what's going on.
