i think you did a great job on that video, besides eye-archy - which i hadn´t noticed if it wasn´t in the comments - and the waste of paper in the first place :D
Making it simple was what Maslow was not about. He was in revolt to simpleton's like this. He was raising legitimate questions to psychological problems that classic psychology, the behaviorists, could not answer and at the same time was so optimistic of (every) human beings identity, hence worth. What makes Maslow brilliant is his philisophical grounding in wanting to know the truth to all things and not counting out the element of facination and love. These kinds of people are just ignorant.
Stick with 'eye-archy', and whenever anyone corrects you, nod, smile and acknowledge that what they say is quite right... and ensure that you get the word 'eye-archy' in the very next sentence.
Pronounce "hire-ar- kee" I don't know what this post WWII material has to do with anything today. So, you took Psych 101 and came to class that day. Not exactly state of the art.
I think a more appropriate name for this is the Hierarchy of Human Needs and Wants.
In my opinion there needs to be one tier before physiological needs: drive to live. Perhaps his hierarchy presupposes that?
I also disagree with the placement of esteem; it should be placed before love and belonging. I personally have found that I cannot achieve love and belonging before I can accept and give worth to myself.
Maslow's hierarchy is spot on. There are instances where humans have avoided or altered the pyramid, such as when an anorexic does not eat for the sake of social acceptance. Although after not eating for long enough, you will die. Ultimately, I feel the pyramid is an excellent theory and may very well be an inescapable fact, although we will probably never know. No matter what you are doing, if you suddenly can't breathe, nothing else matters. Stunning in its simplicty and common sense.
maslow is no match for herzberg. in fact i would go as far to say that if both were cereals maslow would be bran flakes and herzberg would be coco pops. thats how much i rate herzberg.
You couldnt help me locate Wahba and Bridgewells paper "Maslow reconsidered: A review of research on the need hierarchy theory" could you? I'm writting a peper on Maslow's hierarchy and that paper is rather vital! Any help would be most apreciative! Thankyou!
No need to apologize. He is a theorist and there are many others out there with different views on human needs and the behaviors associated to fulfilling those needs.
Armchair research. In 1962 Maslow wrote, "My motivational theory was published 20 years ago and in all that time nobody repeated it, or really analyzed it, or criticized it. They just used it, swallowed it whole with only the minor modifications". Great theory but...thanx for the vid.
Well, the biggest problem with many of the earlier psychological theories, especially human needs theories, is the fact they do not meet falsifiability criterion. How do you prove a person needs self-actualization? How do you prove there is an unconscious mind? You can't.. same as you cannot disprove it. The theories are logical but practically impossible to research further than the theory presented.
Maslow also belived very few people attain the self-actualization need. Why? It requires complete objectivity in ones beliefs. Now that's hard in today's society. Personally I believe that humans struggle to achieve self-actualization, just as animals struggle to achieve just the need of safety and sometime peer into the needs for love/belonging. Just think about it :)
Normally I wouldn't mention pronunciation in a comment but were you prounouncing Hierarchy correctly? I've always made the "H" sound at the beginning of the word and you were pronouncing it like the H was silent. It's not a word I often hear, so I could easily be wrong. I figure you've probably heard it many times recently in your classes so you're probably doing it right, but it does surprise me that the H is silent.
I actually do say it funny *gets embarrassed* the correct pronunciation is hi-er-are-key - it is just one of those things I have never overcome when casually talking (which is what I do for these videos). When there is an H as the first letter, I generally read right over it :( Dunno if its my french training or my bodies refusal to conform :P
lol why the fuck do you have so much trouble drawing a pyramid bitch

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology:
(1) How do flying and piloting relates to self-actualization?
(2) How does sky and flying relate to religion?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)

Couple things, you're audience isn't stupid so that bit about drawing the pyramid.... No. Yeah it's comical but... no.
This was informational so kudos for that.
But yeah... you lost me on the comedy. I'm just lookin to learn. Good job other wise! =)

The issue that I have with the hierarchy of needs is it's application to the workplace.
My problem is how anyone could be so patronising as to assume that anyone (especially me!) may reach self actualisation at work.
No way! Don't get me wrong, I have a good job etc etc etc, it COULD tick all of the boxes for some people, but we aren't all the model person!
