my source is from certified bball refs. certainly coaches knows the rule but not like refs does. its them who interprets rules and apply to actual plays.
"It is legal to touch the ring or the net if the ball is above the ring and not touching the ring, even if the ball is in the imaginary cylinder above the ring." - this is from basketball officials. so its not goaltending.
mmmmmmm, who told you this? does it mean i can touch the ring if the ball isnot touching it or the ball is above it? if the ring move and it causes the ball to miss then what now???
I got that from IAABO's site. iaabo6. org/Interp/2005/misunderstood.htm yes you can touch the rim if ball is in air, regardless where it is at. only way to make it basket interference is that you grab ring, and pull and let it go so it would vibrate. or smash ring hard enough to vibrate it. referees wouldnt consider putting fingers on ring as vibrating the rim.
This is the NBA finals and he just caused Orlando any shot of winning it. However, it's perfectly ok with me since I'm rooting on L.A. and Kobe. I can't root against Hollywood.
Actually it was an illegal screen by lewis. you don't have to be stationary when you set a pick, but you cannot be moving laterally. if you are moving laterally, you have to get your feet flat and set before the offensive player is within one normal step of the defender setting the pick. Rashad lewis' feet are not even flat before contact let alone one step before contact. and he was clearly moving laterally. So if you want to get technical, the correct call was a foul on lewis

read part C? ball has to have chance of going in if u wanna call it basket interference. also you have no idea what vibrating rim means. NBA rule book doesnt clearly state what it is, but other rulebooks clearly state what vibrating rim means. ART. 4 . . . Pulls down a movable ring so that it contacts the ball before the ring returns to its original position.
ball has to have a chance of going in???? i think it really doesnt apply.. think of this, if i shoot the ball and it hits the board first and someone blocks it, will it be Goal Tending or not? i think it is.. ryt? even if we stil dont no if it have a chance to go in or not..
rule book says "e. During a field goal attempt, touch a ball after it has touched the backboard below the ring level and while the ball is on its upward flight. " so if someone touches the ball after ball touch the backboard is goaltending.
all goaltending/interference is based on this rule "c. For goaltending to occur, the ball, in the judgment of the official, must have a chance to score. "
lets say ball is still on the rim, but 3/4 out, u can tap it to put it in, it wont be goaltending.
Agreed, refs should have called a goaltend. The ball was coming off the backboard when Gaysol put his bear paws on the rim and rocked it and the backboard upward. If that is not a case of goaltending then why doesn't everyone just pull down on the rim before the ball contacts it?

Lakers coach Phil Jackson says that Pau Gasol should have been called for goaltending on Courtney Lee's potential game-winning layup in Game 2.
Jackson couldn't remember an NBA game that ended on a goaltending call, but believes Sunday's contest should have.
gnelson2001 2 years ago
Phil Jackson himself said it should have been called basket interference and that's good enough for me.

Gasol's right hand touched the rim. Refs should have called goaltend and counted the bucket. Game over. Refs blew the call.
gnelson2001 2 years ago 2
u are allowed to touch rim/net while ball is in air. u just cant touch rim when ball is on the rim.

this is from the official NBA rulebook:
Section I-A Player Shall Not:
i. Vibrate the rim or backboard so as to cause the ball to make an unnatural bounce.
that's a goaltend. sorry, i have to insist the refs blew the call
