i dont like it wen ppl say they love this song because it has upsetting lyrics and if you are happy about this kind of song it is wrong it is a song that reminds me of my frend who hung herself because noone liked her other then me and my other frends we played this at her funeral RIP (not mentioning her name it is not needed) frends for life miss you xoxo

Well... I'm not saying that everyone else's theory on what the song is about is wrong, I just see the song in another way. Greg and Mary are classmates of this quiet, smart and nice boy that nobody knows who is. "With his fathers nine and a broken fuse" is simply a way of saying that he has a gun and is out of control. So basically this song is about school shootings. Both Mary and Greg end up being killed and the nice and quiet boy ends up in prison ("...and his legs in chains.")

mary doesn't die. In the music video, her life was stolen in a different way. Her youth was taken because she was pregnant. She is alive in the end and on the mural under the boy who had the gun, think before you act. I cried.

Remember the video wasn't created by the person who wrote the song. The lyrics seem to clearly suggest it's about a boy who killed his classmates. I don't think everybody would know the name of someone just because he killed himself.
