Amazing to see how well little Bassets have their "people" trained. Just one little whimper and.. sure enough, another doggie biscuit on the way. They're geniuses at this game. You just can't resist. But there's nothing quite like getting a Basset pup (like I did) at age 7. They're proof there must be a God out there. And boy do they love their families. Especially kids... the smaller the kid the better - and they do become very protective - watch out if they're with a small child.

I am getting my first basset hound on the 2nd April. A little male called Oscar.

After seeing this vid, I rang several breeders, as mine had no females left. I finally found a little 2 day old female basset 8hrs drive away, ready to be picked up in 8 weeks time. Oscar needs a little sister. Thanks a lot! lol.

@desertrat1111 Good question. The breed is of French origin. "Basset" actually means 'lowish'. They are hunting dogs.. no seriously. They were bred to be low to the ground, with great noses, and ears that would kick up a scent. The French have several varieties of Bassets, e.g. Basset d'Artois, Basset Griffon.... and a couple of others. The difference usually has to do with the length of their legs. They are still used as hunting dogs in Europe, but they make great pets. Great with kids.

You got that right. My family has had several. When they're pups, it's especially hard to resist because they're so friggen cute. This is a major reason so many bassets are obese. Owners have to be disciplined. I remember seeing a basset outside Natl Zoo in Washington. He was in great shape, thin and full of energy. His owner had him do all kinds of tricks.. soon there was a crowd of like 100 or so. People remember, these were bred to be hunting dogs. They need excercise and proper diet. !
