  • sounds like that teacher off south park, mmmm kay?

  • can you play slide with a pick????

  • @yourman1234567890 You can, but I don't like to.

  • I'm a begginer slide student/ Do you think any of the 'ring slides' or other slides are of allman value ? - could you tell me what you like if any? ie: do I have to be abler to cover x number of strings with the slide?

  • @007gumshoe I use a Mr B's Bottleneck slide. My favorite. It's all personal preference. Go try some out.

  • To the guys talking about string guage, try using a heavier string on your high e. If you have a spare b throw that on. A little lighter is better. That extra tension makes it easier to play leads on that string. And as always the bigger the string the fatter the tone, so play em as heavy as you can stand.

  • Love it specially your statement " in guitar playing there's no rule" nothing can be more true than that ! Thanks for sharing this nice lesson !

  • actually, Duane used an old Coricidin-D green aspirin bottle.....ok, now play "Dreams"!!!

  • what strings gauge would you recommend on a gibson for the open E tuning? 0.10?

  • @chojinkid I use .011 GHS Boomers.

  • @chojinkid you got all figured it out except the string gauge???

Why do most of guitar players dig only the secondary things in guitar playing like guitar model, speed, string gauge and effects? What about melody and feel? It seems pretty hard to me to play like that , specially to master that right hand technique.

    Nice lesson John!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • @Masterallmighty well I've been playing slide guitar for almost 20 years, but mostly with loose open tunings such as open D and G on a telecaster and 011 gauge, I seldom played open E too with 09 again on a telecaster, a little lose but not that bad. I'm now playing in a southern rock band and got gibson guitars, so yeah I got all figured out as for the playing, I just asked for a suggestion since gibsons have a shorter scale, therefore thicker gauge are normally recommended....

  • @Masterallmighty ....yet open E is a tight tuning so I guess the gauge mustn't be too thick either, on internet I found controversial info about Duane's guage, some say it used 010 in open E, some 011, however most people believe he used 010. For this reason I asked John, since he really caught Duane's tone and knows all his tricks, so if he says 011 on a les paul is the right gauge I'll go for it.

  • Really enjoy and appreciate the lessons. Would like to know how to execute the raking technique can you explain?

  • Hi . My faded SG's 1st birthday was, 2 days ago. An obviously great guitar for playing anysound / anytime. Thanks for the informative lesson.

    Cheers.

  • Hey John, how do you get that rake technique? i know it involves your thumb but if you could just walk me through what your hand does i'd appreciate it...

  • do you play the pentatonik or what scales are here?

  • Duane used an old Coricidin bottle. If you search on the internet, you will find lots of places that make replicas. I think Dunlop makes one. Originals go pretty high on ebay.

  • what kind of slide is that. looks like an old aspirin bottle. Where can i get one like this.

  • I set my SG to with the action at the upper end of the factory specs, or just slightly above, and I use Ernie Ball Power Slinkies. These strings have a heavier upper end relative to the lower end. This combination makes it nice for slide, plus its not so aggressively setup that it is hard to play fretted notes. So its not hard to go back and forth between slide and non-slide. Also it helps to play slide on a guitar with a flatter fretboard radius, such as a SG.

  • great lesson and great touch, man. what are your string guages for open-E?

  • You play great, but your voice sounds like you're drunk. Cool lesson still.

  • An SG to me is THE perfect slide guitar.

  • Awsome

  • Hi John, is the tube screamer the TS9, 808,9xD or?

and do you address the tone etc. in your lessons?

    Thank you again.

  • @ibberman TS9 There will be a tone video lesson on the bonus disc in the 6 DVD package that will be re-released soon. Thanks!

  • @johntuggle Where can i get a slide like you have. Looks like an old aspirin bottle.

  • do i have to raise the strings when playing slide or is it just preference?

  • @fendershed33 Makes it a lot easier if you raise the strings. I raise the action on all my guitars I play slide on. It's best to have a dedicated guitar for slide.

  • @fendershed33 flat radius and high action makes it waaay easier.

  • do i have to raise the strings when playing slide or is it just preference?

  • Hey I'm just getting into slide playing. Should I set my strings higher when using the slide?

  • @onlyonetigger Yes.

  • @onlyonetigger its not neccesairy.

i have a ibanez jem with a very low action.even on the 24th fret there is max0.75 mm space between the strings and the frets, and i can play slide on it, so its not nessacairy.

    sorry for my bad english

  • When I play slide I like to raise my bridge up higher than normal. It help me out with playability. great vids!

  • @nosdog136 what kind of bridge do you have? how do you raise your action?

  • @rch1407 I have a tune-o-matic bridge . and I simply raise up my tail piece.

  • @rch1407 I meant to say I raise my tail piece up higher lol. I have an Sg.

  • i tried like hell to be irritated until i saw how good you really are, and realized that a little kid might google Duane because of it. thanks man.

  • Is this narrated by Louis Tulley from ghostbusters!?

  • excellent. what more do you need.

    rock on

    the hawk

  • what tuning is this?

  • Excellent video! Thanks!

  • no shit....play the blues

  • This is great. Been playing for thirty years, slide for the last eight. Some neat tips. Sweet tone and utterly authentic phrasing. Thanks from the UK !

  • Great playing I have been playing this song for years you really teach it well I think all aspiring slide players could learn from you a really great lesson!

  • This is awesome dude! thanks for posting this!

  • great vid man :]

  • Perfect, clear lesson! Awesome 5*****!

  • Backwards slide = Air horn.

  • is that an sg 61 reissue?

i really want one, for a cool 60's rock/blues sound u think i should get one of these or the p90 sg Classics?

  • @prophetdude2 Yes. I like the 57 classics better than the p90s.

  • Great video. How is this in the key of D when the notes are mostly between fret 8-10? I typically think of the as the Key of C "box".

  • @tstabno Open e tuning is different. Key of D is 10th fret. Thanks!

  • @johntuggle is thanks really mean...I disagree????

  • how high do you keep your action? thanks

  • He's playing in the KEY of D and in the TUNING of E, come on pay attention

  • your a fucking idiot

  • tuning is open e, but you can play in any key schmuck.

  • does anyone know how to get the guitar tone from ramblin man?

  • Awesome lesson man. This is exactly what I've been looking for to get a head start on some of Duane's technique. Not to copy him, just to incorporate some of his style into my slide playing. And this video revealed a lot in just a few minutes. Thanks!

  • You are a good player. I learn so much from you. Best part about your instruction: no attitude. You just teach and do it well.

  • great tone man, ive got an angus young SG and they have similar pickups, im lookin to get that sound (distortion wise) what amp do you use? peddles? thanks man

  • How do you EQ you're amp? Thanks, great playing too.

  • Thanks for the comments everyone! It's appreciated.

  • yo bro

    i love the vid

i took your suggestion and want to set a guitar up for just slide

it has an h-s-h combination (as is my preference for my guitars)

i was wondering, what pickups do you think i should put in?

    also

anything else i need for my guitar setup?

i was going to have it tuned to open e

    thanks!

  • I like 57 Classic Gibson. Really warm sound. I have 2 guitars with those pickups.

  • your really helped me out on raking. with a pick raking is nothing but in slide using your fingers raking can be difficult cause you have to mute the strings. gotta use a sorta thumb and index finger rotation.

  • great job man...

  • You're awesome man. Those licks are sweet, you make the guitar come alive!

  • John - great lessons. I've trying to find something like this for a long time to get going on slide. I actually got some decent sounds after watching a couple of your vids. - Thanks

  • Yeah, slide guitar is all about feeling and expression. Duane Allman played the middle of the neck were all of the resonant sounds are naturally occur.

  • Straight in Fender Twin - 74? Master volume model?

  • Tubescreamer for gain, Master Volume model.

The model everyone thinks is no good. :)

  • awsome stuff are u in open E? also if played in open g could i just move everything up a step so inted of playing on the 10 fret i'd be playing on the 12th fret

  • Thanks! It's open E. Open G is totally different. Those licks won't sound the same in Open G.

  • Are you using the same amp you identified in your opening slide lesson?

    Tube brand?

  • I'm using the fender 74 Twin Reverb. Thanks!

  • John, Excellent! your tone sounds like a harmonica's honk. Beautiful observation and interpretation on Duane's technique.
