While this wasn't the last "Muppet Show" episode to air - in fact, it was the *first* episode of the fifth and final season - it was the last one to be produced.
I've always thought it was the perfect swan song for the show. And for Mr. Kelly, of course.
I have this episode on DVD. (Along with Elton John and Julie Andrews) This was my favorite show growing up- even though I watched the reruns on Nickelodeon. (I grew up in the late 80's and early 90's)
Last time he ever performed it...Made me cry. The slow dolly in when he first starts singing just gets me. The way he leaves the set with the song in the background is like he's leaving us.
really wish that they would bring back stuff like this on TV instead of the crap they have now. they don't make and good tv shows or great music anymore.
When Gene Kelly was filming Singing in the Rain, the famous scene of him was done with a 103 degree fever. That shows how much of an amazing actor he is.
Bull, it's not true that Gene will never sing it better than how he did in the movie. However well he sang it then, and however much I love it. Gene was greater than the greatest of the greatest, he simply sang it better each and every time he did.
I love Gene Kelly, I remember watching this episode on T.V. I was SO excited to see him on t.v and singing this song. when i was little I wanted to tap dance just like him...but of course that didn't work out but i tried.
im 18 and im crazy about Gene Kelly!!!his face and his voice always makes me smile..When I got into problems or sad..I always open youtube search for Gene Kelly..and guess what??It heals my mood and suddenly I smile again..RIP Gene..I wish u were in my generation..^^
i'm 18 and have been in love with Gene Kelly since i was about 8! He really is truly amazing and this is showing him at his most vulrenable and best :) x
I love how he accepts that the past is in the past. And trying to fit all those other songs to that vamp is cute. And yet... I love watching his face when he starts "Singing in the rain". He almost looks transformed... He looks so HAPPY, I can't help but grin like an idiot. Thank you Gene, for bringing smiles to so many people.
There's no man like Gene and there never will be, he's the ultimate dancer, choreographer and artist! I've been in love with him for 40 years now and will still love him the day I die!
Darn ,it makes me cry -- such grace of spirit, refusing to try to hang on the the past. He doesn't pretend to be that old Kelly any more. I cried watching this on The Muppets the first time, as Sopontop says.
And so many greats from my past who have gone over the Rainbow Bridge.
On the third hand, there's one heck of a music hall on that other side!!
Even as an old guy, he sure does make me swoon! I am 16... and completely in love. What a wonderful, classy man. They sure don't make them like that anymore.
I love how he looks directly into the camera (omg!, melting!) No fluff, no fake scenes, no pretense, just pure class! This is how I want to remember his last days in show biz. Hella cool, man- well done.
i love that they recreated the street scene for just a few beautiful seconds of film. you don't find that kind of detail anymore. what an incredible tribute.
I don't know if it's just me, but when he starts to sing 'I'm Singin' in the Rain', and then he walks down the sidewalk with his umbrella, it's a bitter-sweet moment.
He had such a kind face, and even as he got older, he was still full of life. This made me cry so much, the world would be a better place if he was still with us. I love you Gene Kelly. What an Idol to dancers, singers and actors everywhere.
This made me cry. So sad, so sweet, so beautiful. Thank you for everything, Gene - What would my teens (in the 1950s !) have been without you and all the musicals? And, from what i read below, I am apparently not the only one who was moved to tears. My love to all who loved this!
X Factor competitors pay attention. This was talent. I posted a small tribute to Gene Kelly featuring the group Republica. Titled: Nothing's feeling new. It show how his dance and prescence transfers to modern music. A beautiful clip, many thanks for posting.
this clip makes me want to cry... :-( I love gene kelly...and singing in the rain was one of my favs...they just don't make them like him anymore...a true legend
You have to admire the man for singing then. At his advanced age, his singing voice had started to go, hence why he sang so softly to get the notes right.
I'm only 20 and I'm also inlove with classic movies, they're just great!! i always call them "feel good movies", when im down i put on a classic.. and everything feels just fine :)
Then he smiles and walks off, I figure it symbolies that he dies. (I'm so sentimental!) Like the happiset man in the world. Was 4 when he died, but love him still. May you dance with Angels Gene Kelly.
Then he put down the umbrella, shurg his shoulderin his own why-bother-way and thinks: "I made the rain stop, I made all the troubles go away, or at least made you forget them just for a while. I reached my goal, and now I can leave you. You can sing in the rain on your own now, cus I teached you how to do it."
I have this idea: When he walks out on the street, with the umbrella on the shoulder, he stops, looks at the sky: He thinks: Well see! It stopped raining!
geeeeene! i love gene, it really annoys me that a lot of people these days (these days, what am i saying, i'm like 16, lol) don't know who he is. :( i have all his movies :D:D <3
God when he walked down that street in the end, smiling and strutting, I started to cry. Don't know why. That little piano tune and him, the umbrella on the shoulder and everything - - - He just looks like the happiest man in the whole wide world.
and the funny thing is, he is debonair and wonderful-- and totally at home with the muppets. some actors are a little awkward with them, but he manages to be as smooth with them as with everything else. <3
An American Superclassic. ... ugh ! there are no words! what a privelage and an honor for us to see him on the muppet show. and the set looking so much like the movie ... and when he closes the umbrella and smiles....
I feel the same way. I know that he couldn't dance forever, but it's hard to get my heart to believe it. It's even tougher now knowing that he's left this world. Thank God for preserving his movies and all the other footage so that we can enjoy Gene in the present day!
he was incredible, great actor, he is missed. look in the background and the blue thing with green hair is mulch from muppets tonight, the one that hangs out with dr. phil van neuter, your friendly vetrinarian. there is also a muppet that is a seal.
The first song was "S'Wonderful" from "An American in Paris," the second "You Were Meant for Me" from "Singin' in the Rain," and the last one was "For Me and My Gal" from "For Me and My Gal."
What a great way to introduce kids to the classics! I see what you mean, though. Now that Gene's gone, watching this is a little bittersweet, but what a way to honor him also!
