In Bach's time, every serious organ student owned a pedal harpsichord. It was the only way to practice at home. Churches were cold, and finding (and paying for) a bellows pumper or two got to be expensive! Some musicologists believe the "Eight Little Preludes and Fugues" were written *specifically* for pedal harpsichord (practice pieces).

This is the first time I've of the instrument but, I think I'd like to own a pedal clavichord.
