@TheJan8421 He is still living and just celebrated his 85th birthday. Great Performances on PBS just broadcast his special performance of Duets II, this past Friday evening.
How can anyone dislike this song enough to actually publicly declare it. I know we are all entitled to our own opinions, but come on... how could a song about how the world should be ruled be disliked by anyone?!
@birdoben50 Obvious troll is painfully obvious... The stereotypical American ignorance gave it away (not that all Americans are ignorant, just the trolls)
boy does this song have a great message--I love everything about it--the words, melody, tender bridge,==and of course Mr. B--there is nobody like him-he FEELS his songs--like Judy G.
If i ruled the world...No racism, no hatred, no war, no famine, no world hunger, no diseases, no bad...my world would embrace peace, love, and happiness..it would flourish everywhere and anywhere man could walk upon...if i ruled the world..
@ItsDaPhenom01 DREAM ON! Human Nature would never allow this! The "great creator" didn't have this in his infinite plan. Sinatra will always be no. 1, and this guy is a far 2nd.(I'll hear about this?)
Who hasn't tried to sing this song? I remember the first time I heard this song play on the radio growing up in Hoffman Estates, Illinois some 50 years ago or so, and soon after, I had to add it to my growing list of 45's of which at the time I only had only 2 and they were Elvis's" Don't Be Cruel" and "Hound Dog. "

@yakuza488 Yes. In English. But in most other languages it doesn't. :)
For instance, in German it's called Weinachten and it has the word "wein" in it, which means wine. And "acht" means eight.
In Hungarian it's called "karácsony", which has "kar" (meaning arm), and "ács" (meaning carpenter) in it, but it has obviously nothing to do with them, and these words arent't the roots of the word karácsony, or in German, Weinachten. :)
Every morning, the satellite cafe, at the nevins exit of the subway, with a cup of coffee and a toasted corn muffins. How could you leave the cafe with nothing but a smile. great song!
Tony Bennett is a legend and it puts my generation to shame.
Sinatra, Dean Martin, Louis Armstrong, Fred Astaire, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, Hank Williams (He's a legend of country music for all those who don't know), etc.
These are the immortals that will stay with us forever. God Bless every single one of these masters of their genre.
wouldn't that be insane if Tony Bennett and Metallica did a show together with Tony Bennett singing Metallica songs with his style than Metallica doing metal versions of Tony Bennett songs, I think that would be insanely nutty and I think it could be pulled off well.
The comment about 'not liking songs of my generation' cos its all crap is stupid, cos every generation/decade has had bad music - or music to just enjoy in the moment, but once you leave that decade it's the really good songs you always remember.
@Ytaker You're an idiot. the metaphor is obviously beyond your junior high capacity. You put the dick in dictator. Listen to the words, moron, not the title. The dumbing down of Murka continues.... jeez.
@slownoman If I ruled the world, everything would be awesome? As a british university student, I perfectly understand the metaphor. Democrat party members like him have a long history of believing everything would be amazing and full of dancing if they could just do what they know in their hearts is right.
Understand- he has a simplistic, republicans are evil, democrats are awesome political view, and he wants to make everything better by just changing things. That is bad.
@Ytaker Dear wanker: have you actually listened to the song? It's not about politics, you fascist freak. Yeah, change is terrible. Let's go back to the middle ages, you old wanker you. Up yours.
@slownoman The song was originally an election manifesto in a musical. His utter lack of any regard for anyone who doesn't want to do what he wants pisses me off. If I ruled the world, I'd stick with the freedom bit, and not the behavour control.
You're using fascist as a term for, political person you dislike, I presume? By Godwin's law, you just lost this argument.
The sort of change he wants half of people hate. As such, I dislike him singing this song even more.
@Ytaker You have your head up your ass. This song, by any sane interpretation, was an evocation of a world of equality, peace, and all those things you hate. Piss off.
@slownoman Er, no it's not. There's nothing much about peace, or equality. It's basically a song saying, if he ruled the world, everyone would sing and dance with him, and it would be so awesome. This sort of simplistic interpretation of the world is endearing to some, and creepy to others- like me. To get actual peace and equality, the main impediment is the whole, dictatorship thing.
You know. The whole reason we lack peace and equality is because people rule the world.
@Ytaker Whatever substance you're on isn't working for you. Read the lyric- you can Google it. It is NOT about dick-taters, or about governmental principles at all. Of course, in jr. high they didn't teach you that. But, you know, the resolution is simple enough even for you to grasp: don't listen to the song. I shudder to think what might constitute your musical "taste". The Clash? Fugazi? Probably the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus. What. Ever.
@slownoman I did read the lyric and listen to it. That's where I got my impression of it. You disagree, but you're not giving me any reason to change my mind. The opposite, rather.
There is another solution. I continue saying the song is bad. I prefer that solution.
I'm not into your sort of music. I hate Miley Cyrus and Jonas Brothers. Bird and the bee, Goldfrapp, and Imogen Heap for me.
@slownoman Second year, not freshman. You have a lot of stereotypes, and rage. You should get help. I'm not quite sure how you read this song as a metaphor. He's pretty straightforward on what he wants to do. You seem like a typical person who doesn't understand what a metaphor actually is. There is no analogy here.
@Ytaker wow. thus, sophomoric. Yet, there's hope, that the years might bring you beyond one dimensional thinking, if you can glorify what you blurt as thinking. What does the lyric "ever day would be the first day of spring" mean to you, twit? Does it mean that the singer or writer actually thought that he/she/it could, but force, make each day the vernal equinox? If not, how is that not a metaphor, you simpleton? God gave better brains to a rubber duck. My eight year old grandson is past you.
@slownoman You're the one being a retard. Ok, there's a metaphor in the song. How is that at all related to what we were talking about. How does that challenge my point that the song has rather sickening undertones? I thought you meant that the whole song was a metaphor for something, thus negating the bad undertones. Not that you were just randomly saying that there's metaphors in the songs.
I get what you're saying, I just don't see how it's relevent to anything.
@slownoman Yes, but most goofy songs don't wish for really bad things. There are many songs. Most wish for things like drugs, or sex, or love, not world dominance.

'If I Ruled the World' is by the British composer, Cyril Ornadel. "Pickwick" is a wonderful musical, but he also won Best British Musical awards for his "Great Expectations" and "Treasure Island". (Bing Crosby made a wonderful recording of "At My Time of Life" from "Great Expectations".) For many years, Cyril Ornandel was Musical Director of BBC TV's "Sunday Night at the London Palladium". He now retired and lives in Tel Aviv. His autobiography "Reach For The Moon" was published last year.

Always loved this song. I once heard a snippet of this sung by Sammy Davis Jr, but I can't seem to find it. Does it exist?
