  • mine locks into the Secure EX sheath but doesen't come out so easy like its stuck in there.? any suggestions.?

  • that is my havey duty knife man its power full

  • I too love this knife, was my first real purchase of a good knife and has now been with me more that 11 years. Mine is a carbon V and I have made some of the changes you mentioned in this vid. I am working on ideas for adding survival gear to the knife.

  • Nice knife. The hilt of a sword or knife is, strictly speaking, the handle. The guard may be considered part of the handle, but the guard itself is not the hilt.

  • GRIPPY!!

  • Bruce Campbell, is that you? (I almost expected the video to end with "Shop smart, shop S-Mart.")

  • @adhair This is my boom stick!

  • Thank you very much for this great review. Maybe next time you can go to a besser location like a forest. That would be perfect for a knife review.

  • all my sog knives have that type of sheath

  • @thefishmanb95 sog is foreign

  • how can u tell if its a sk5 version? i dunno what version mine is...

  • @WarzoneMerc This is the SK-5 version.

  • @icychap Ibought mine in 2007 0r 2008 & it came with a cordura sheath I don't know if my knife is made out of SK-5 or not & I want to order the newer type Kydex sheet for my knife.? no one on line sells them except I have to go to Cold Steel co for it.?& they most likely charge the big bucks for them.?

  • @WarzoneMerc I know im just wondering if mine is the same version it does not haveing markings to tell me otherwise.

  • @WarzoneMerc only the model # would change. like a 38lrst. not the steal unless it is a early model

  • @WarzoneMerc I bought mine from CS back in 2007 & it has the codrura sheth also It did not come with a red label on it that says Carbon steel & will rust if not kept oiled.? My other CS knives like my Recon Tanto & the Bushman came with the red label warning on them & they were bought at the same time. So I will call CS & buy the newer Kydex sheth from them if they are not more than $25.00

  • @WarzoneMerc Does anyone know when the SK5 version came out vs the Carbon steel one .? I am going on the Cold Steel forum maybe some one there would know the answer.?

  • @COYOTE165A If ya find out let me know bro! also if yur there could u find out who made the carbon V there was a guy who worked for CS but he's with ontario now. Trying to find his name i am just wondering if he took the Carbon V forumla with him or its dead and gove with Camillis. Thanks bro

  • Nice review, as opposed to other reviews on the same blade, not so obviously done. I wish you to do more present day reviews based on your experience. You do it well!

  • I have a cordura sheath. How can I get a kydex for this recon scout?

  • @avapplication Cold Steel sells the sheath.

  • @icychap CAn you pass me the link cause I cannot find it?

  • @icychap HOW MUCH ANY IDEA,?

  • So if you buy it online from somewhere else then coldsteel website it will be the actual knife just cheaper?

  • @slowandpainless yes, CS put these high prices to "set" the knives higher, at first you see them in a CS catalouge for a high price but then you go online at they are way cheaper you are like wow! pretty good marketing trick

  • Where are you guys seeing it for $60 to $80? Amazon, almost always the cheapest, has it for $100. And nowhere else I've seen has it cheaper.

  • @WeSetOurMatesAblaze I purchased mine some time ago. Given the popularity and consistent demand for the knife, I doubt you'll find it any cheaper. Trust me, though, it is worth every penny.

  • Don't buy it! It is an amazing knife but wayyyyy overpriced. Have you ever seen the videos where they "test" them? I bought a fake one for $30 at a gun store, and it has the same performance and does all the things in the video, I tried already (Cut down a tree with it and it still shaves hair :D) So in conclusion, don't waste your money on an average knife that cost $170+ Just because it has "COLD STEEL" Stamped on it.

  • @PillzAreyummy I respectfully disagree. Since modified, this knife has become my go-to blade, and now accompanies me on every camping trip.

  • @icychap I too bring it on every trip, it is an excellent knife, but is way over priced. I compare Cold Steel to Prada. It's only expensive because it's name is on it. It's the same in reality as anything else

  • What do you mean they could use slightly better steel? For $100? You gotta be kidding?! Want better steel go for San Mai for over $200. I'll buy a pare of these.

  • Just ordered mine. Thanks for the review!!!

  • i agree chap its a awsome knife cant wait 4 mine

  • Great vid bud. Thanks!

It only makes my decision between the SRK and the Recon Scout that much harder though.

  • I dont buy cold steel products. They are hyped way too much. I seen the knife tests and they dont hold up. I have seen some vids and their have been some handle issues. The handle wobbles on the tang. They are also made by little kids. And lynn thompson is a dumb ass fake. This is a good review though!

  • ill buy it.

  • Does it have a full tang?

Also, exactly how would one attach to

molle?? Doesn't appear to have molle/pals attachments.

  • @MrTangent Yes the knife is full tang. The tang is concealed within the kraton. As for attaching the knife to MOLLE webbing, because of the grommets and slots, webbing and/or cordage can be used to affix the sheath to just about anything.

  • Yep, your right. I should own this knife.

    Thanks for the great review.

  • Great knife! I love mine.

  • Nice toothpick!

  • I ordered one today, along with a Trail Master, both in SK5 steel. I have several fixed blade knives from RAT and Ontario but none with blade steel as thick. I am a wood splitting fool!

    Thanks for the great video!

  • I know nothing about knives and steels. Is there any reason to buy the San Mai III version for double the SK-5's price? I'm thinking SK-5, but I really have no idea. This is a great design, and I appreciate your response so I can get to buying this knife.

  • @45calibermedic San Mai III is a laminated steel which combines a hard core to form a resilient edge, and softer outer layers to absorb shock and add flexibility. SK-5 is one steel throughout. I prefer the SK-5 because: 1) it is very easy to sharpen and takes a fine edge; 2) it is very tough; 3) I prefer a V-grind for working with wood.

  • wonder if I should sell my brand new SOG Gov Tac and buy this one? (cold steel)

  • @urkingod In a word, YES. There is no comparison. I don't like the Gov Tac's steel, and its capabilities pale in comparison to the Recon Scout.

  • WHAT A BLADE

  • i love this knife overall, however i dislike the finger guard. i had mine pop loos and slide around a bit, i managed to put it back to the way it was but its still a little loose. this was from throwing it though, all the other stress i subjected it to caused no dammage other than wrecking the finish

  • i like the secure ex sheath too igot the trail master and i was disapointed that it didnt come with it but since the recon scout has a secure ex sheath i will get it. i agree it is very very well designed and i agree on all your critisim on the knife and your r right they could use better steel

  • urbansurvivaloutfitters sells these knives for a great price. I just ordered one and cant wait to get it ive done alot of research on these. Awesome review man

  • Thank you for this awesome review!

I do a lot of bushcraft and am amenable to the Recon scout's tactical capability. I just purchased one in their new high carbon version, which is SK-5, and it is yet to arrive. Was still wondering if I did the right thing to purchase it and, well let's just say that after your excellent review I await with baited breath!

    Keep it up Icy Chap,

    Cheers!

  • "baited" breath comes from eating worms.

BATED breath comes from having your breath taken away...or "abated".

  • @ayokay123 I believe you are baiting me!

  • You would be correct! Thought I'd fool you. :D

  • @ayokay123 Cheers!

  • Ordered mine today. Great review!

  • Hey nice review thanks! I have been looking into getting a good multi purpose knife. I like this one. I noticed that you said they could have used better steal. What would you recomend for someone looking to spend the extra to really get a long lasting and durable purchase?

  • I really like the Ontario-made RAT knives, and the RAT7 in D2 is an excellent choice. The RC6 is a fine knife in 1095. If you want a knife more geared towards outdoors activity and less tactical, and you're willing to spend a little more, try a Bark River.

There are too many other options to list, but check out a local dealer who may have actual examples for you to handle and feel to see what you like best. Good luck!

  • I have thinking on to buy a recon scout knife from cold steel :)

  • the new SK-5 version is $151.99 straight from Coldsteel , it does not have a satin finish or brass guard hes confusing it with the SAN MAI version , the REAL REASON its more expensive now is because its MAR TEMPERED now , giving it even more strength and durability !!!

  • @davinicus1727 Yea but there is also one called the trail master with a brass guard and a satin finish....not made from san mai.....but there is a san mai as well....3 different types of this blade.

  • on yourcornerstore th $100

  • can you do a s&w 820B boot knife preview plzz

  • I don't own it as of yet - if someone wants to lend me one I can do the review, otherwise it will have to wait.

  • Should i buy this one or recon tanto

  • What's your end use?

  • @stealthowns1304 , depends on ur weight preference and use of the steel, the recon tanto is AUS8A stainless steel and works great tactically without the hassle of lubricating or being heavy , the Recon Scout is strong , stout and capable of any outdoor task but its a little heavy 2 carry as an urban self defense knife so again it depends on ur use , if ur going outdoors and want strength then get the Recon Scout , if ur going around town get the Tanto

  • Yet again, I want one.

  • Have you ever tried batoning with this knife? If so, how does it hold up?

  • It holds up tremendously well. I have had nothing but great experiences with it. It holds its edge very well and sharpens easily, and the steel is extremely tough. I am confident bringing it with me into the back country even in freezing temperatures.

  • where did u get the cold steel recon scout 4 60 to 80 $??? when i look it up its at least 120. ones even 200

  • When I purchased my black-coated SK-5 version, that's what I paid. It's been a while, and Cold Steel now makes it with a satin finish and brass guard, and charges a lot more for the frills.

  • yeah i thought u might have bought it a while ago. i heard they stopped making this version of it. yeah they do charge out the ass 4 the new one. its only 200 on amazon. the regular retail prize on amazon says over 300

  • another great review, icy. kudos.

  • hmm this or the trail master? How does one decide? I am a poor broke b*tch so i need all i can get from one blade with little or no upgrades (including sheath). I lean more tword a survival knife not a tactical knife and i think this is it, what do you think?

  • one knife ,this is it ,sheath is more practical although the trial master is larger ther are more uses for this blade

  • Wow great video man!

  • nice vid i just subscribed u im about to get this knife but i was thinking about getting the srk to

  • Hey what website did you buy your recon scout at?

  • Sorry, it's been so long I don't recall.

  • well i really want one and i have been unable to find one:(

  • go to google shopping and type cold steel recon scout in

  • awesome review! but a response to theknifeattic..taiwan = china

  • it is still being made but production is being moved from china to taiwan so the price has increased. i emailed cold steel to get that information

  • Thank you for the update!

  • Just got my order. Mine came from Japan. But it was the San Mai III.

  • awasome review great knive thanks.

  • Thanks!

  • nice review ,im gonna get one.

  • do you have the rat 7?

  • Your so luck you have one because like i said it so hard to find one at a good price. i wanted one so bad!

  • Another great review. keep em coming.

  • You know your stuff, dude. I got an idea for a future vid- since your steel knowledge is so extensive, why not show a few knives of different materials and explain the differences? If you've already rated the knives, it'd be cool to see how the steel type played into that.

  • Not a bad idea! Might be a future video...

  • Did the hilt on your knife ever come a little loose because that was one of the things people didnt like about it.

  • Absolutely not - it's rock solid.

  • Also from maybe seeing reviews or pictures what knife do you think is better the Becker BK-7 or the ontario RAT 7?

  • It really depends upon how you want to use the knife. For tactical utility I would side with the Becker, since it's lighter, faster, and can be made sharper due to the broad, flat grind. For outdoor use, I would probably take the RAT7 for its tough steel and robust construction.

    Hope that helps!

  • Comment removed

  • But the Becker is heavyer than the rat 7 and the becker does not have a full flat grind. i'm going to use the knife for outdoor use.
