Sadao is unique. No greater compliment can be given to a jazzman. I hear Dick Oatts, Phil Woods, and even a little Art Pepper and Bird oozing out of him. Not that these are influences of his, but they share some DNA....
This is a beautiful rendition by Sadao. I had the opportunity to hear him live in Chicago years ago, and it was great. My friend James Williams on piano is laying down some wonderful harmonies as usual. He left us way to soon.
what would this kind of jazz be called? i dont know much about the historyu or anything i just listen to the artists ive found, but if what hes doing is a seprate subgenre i want to look up more people who play this kind of stuff. sorry if this is a dumb question lolol
Wow! Sadao Watanabe is simply beautiful! His phrasing is so elegant. The pianist reminds me of Bill Evans...very melodic with lots of gorgeous changes. This is a very enjoyable and moving tune.
I think you'll find that this song is by Jimmy Van Heusen, the great JM only wrote the lyrics, as he did for over a thousand songs before his death in 76

@tracksuitjim it doesn't really have a particular name. the style of song is a ballad though.
if you dig this check out some stuff by Dexter Gordon maybe? Especially his album 'Ballads'.

You're Right! Miles Davis was always the trumpet player and one of the best one too.

Love the laid-back bits. The amount of soul in it is just bad ass.
