He died on the runway in a passenger plane in which a fire had started in the waste bin in the rear washroom. He died of smoke inhalation along with many other passengers.
It was said that the last thing anyone saw of him before he died was him helping people to safety before he died of asphyxiation (smoke).
He was part of the tombstone engineering that is called "safety" in the airline industry. That flight is what put smoke detectors in the washrooms on planes.
I'm so thankful to have been able to see Stan perform, at the Sounding Board in West Hartford, Connecticut. I treasure that memory and my autographed copy of his songbook. His music will live forever in Canada and the rest of the world.
I was introduced to Stan Rogers a couple years ago by my best friend and I was blown away. He then told me that he had died! Man, what a tragic loss. R.I.P Mister Rogers, you and your beautiful music is sorely missed.
"The Jeannie C" comes close as does "White Squall." How about "Last Watch on The Midland," or "First Christmas Away From Home"? Stan was a genius. I am convinced his songs will still be played and sung 100 years from now.
@MiramichierA1 You'd be right. I play them. I'm in college now. My kids will learn them when I have kids. I am proud to have sung Stan Rogers' works and to have introduced them to others. What a wonderful performer and artist and man; here's to him, his family, and his legacy.
Hey folks - some know and others don't that Stan's son, Nathan Rogers, sounds an awful lot like him and is making quite a name for himself. Search Nathan Rogers, Summerfolk Finale or Nathan Rogers Home County Folk Festival on YouTube or google him. You won't be disappointed!
Just want to add to the above that Nathan's version of "Three Fishers" is stunning, and that you can listen to it and other songs on his MySpace page.
There is a stunning tribute song to Stan Rogers called 'Safe in the Harbor' by Eric Bogle. You can find it on youtube. I can virtually guarantee anyone who has been touched by Stan's music and voice will be in tears by the end of it. 'Mary Ellen Carter'is without doubt one of the very finest maritime songs ever written. What a loss!
I heard "The Mary Ellen Carter" for the first time today. How have I missed Stan Rogers, since I love folk music so much. What a wonderful voice and wonderful song.
Most singers would sell their soul to have a voice like that! Why did he have to die so young? Lord, if you had to take someone, why didn't you take Neil Young?
Three Fishers is such a haunting beautiful song.

It is such a tribute to a young man whose music is still played and heard across Canada, and around the world, apparently!
This past June 2 marked the 25th anniversary of his (in 1983), and still he is still here!
Wonderful!

And I can confirm that he is listened to in the United States. He's my favorite singer. Just wish he had not died so young.

Is that right? Awesome, Satyix; I talk to a few people in that part of the world and this is so nice to hear!
Those of us from the Maritimes are just so proud of our Celtic background. :)
