@MN12BIRD That was no rare instance. Electronics in general are very expensive here, compared to the US and Asia.
For example: The new Radeon HD 7970 (From XFX) is around 600 bucks on newegg. The cheapest seller in Denmark currently sells it for 833 bucks. Depending on what you're going to buy, the margin could be smaller or bigger. But in general, it's always above the price in the US. And having it shipped is pretty much not an option. For such expensive parts... continued...
@MN12BIRD ... the government will add TAX/VAT + customs fees once it arrives in my country... And that additional cost usually makes shipping it from the US the worst attempt at saving money ever, since it could easily go above what it would initially cost to just buy the part in my country from the very beginning.
@MN12BIRD That hasn't stopped me from starting my very first gaming rig build, which will feature the i7-2700K + HD 7970 among other high-end things. It'll take a few months before I've got all the parts lined up though. It's expensive to be a hardcore PC gamer here =P
Well for those who ask how much it costs to make a ps3 it is around $200-210. What you pay extra is for the cable, controller and hdd that comes with it.
Damn i still got the first 60gb ps3 that came out in november 2006. However, on the first week of november 2011, i got the ylod.. lol. it died on me 5 yrs exactly! crazy! RIP piano finish ps3 :(. ima get the slim this black friday. anyways, nice vid.
Quick Question i plugged my PS3 into a standard CRT TV and i tried playing MGS4 but when i started up my PS3 the TV blew out. Anybody else had this problem?
wow 499 for the base at launch?? my budget gaming rig has less than 500 dollars worth of parts in it and that gets it 4gb of ram a 3.0ghz quad core cpu and 55nm gtx 260 sp216...
@psychoclown420 Sure but GTX260's didn't even exist in 2005! Geforce 8800GT's weren't even out yet! Not to mention the only way to get a 3.0GHZ quad core in 2005 was with expensive twin dual cores and a dual socket motherboard and that setup would cost you thousands! Things change fast. Even a BD-ROM drive in 2005 was half the price of a PS3! The PS3 was cheap for everything you got in 2005.
@MN12BIRD You're right, there is a short window right after the launch of a new generation of game consoles when they are the better buy, but that doesn't last very long. That window also coincides with the period of time after a launch when the manufacturer is actually losing money in order to keep the prices competitive. Once the product has been out for a while and in this case, they go from 90nm to 65nm to 45nm it gets cheaper to make and then the company is making lots of profit per unit..
@psychoclown420 Yep Sony doesn't care if they make any money of the console. The more consoles they sell the more games they'll sell and they make money off every game sold. You're right they do loose money sometimes selling the console just to get more out there. They can get cheper to make in the long run as the die size goes down and production goes up. But they also sell cheaper now I mean what's a PS3 now less than $299.99? How much does Sony really make off that I wonder?
@MN12BIRD well the strategy is to lose money the first year in order to keep the price down and sell a lot of consoles to get popularity and developers on board, but after that they regain profit to pay off that year and of course the cost of R/D. This current batch of consoles was a very expensive R/D and launch and are therefore going to be around for a while. The tech is very cheap after several die shrinks and mass production and the xbox has the gpu and cpu on one chip now lol
@MN12BIRD The PS3 was released on November 2006, not in 2005. And although quad-cores weren't popular yet (the Q6600 and Q6700 models were only released in January 2007), Conroe and Brisbane dual-core processors were already enough to outperform the PS3.
@NewLynxS Yeah that was my mistake in the comments here. Not sure why I thought it was 2005 but it was 2006 you're right. I do think it's funny how some people think that the PS3 has 7 cores so it outperforms any quad core PC. LOL once again you're right about performance. They're comparing apples to donkeys there.
By the way you can turn the PS3 on or off remotely from the controller. This uses the Bluetooth feature of the controller. To turn on the system, you simply tap the PS button. To turn off the system, hold down the PS button then go to "Turn off the system".I use this feature a lot.
If I had to choose between the 360 and the PS3,I'd go with the PS3.I mean it's great for multimedia,it's a powerhouse,XMB works great, and it now has a ton of awesome games.
The consoles are starting to have lower performance vs the modern gaming computer, I can get a radeon 5870 eyefinity with an asus rampage 3 motherboard, 6gigs of ddr3 1600 MHz and an amd phenom processor 975 x4 and a blueray drive for around 1000 USD I already have a hdd and with all of that I can play crysis warhead on max settings with playable framerates so you don't need a 5000 dollar computer to play bad company 2 with a little more graphics. You can pay 1000 to play the game with the bes
i just want to say that i have a slim and its actualy backwards compatiable its the 250 gb version got it about 1 year ago also the controlers actualy go up to 7 it will flash 3,4 for the 7th person
i still play with my ps3 20 gb and wont give in to ps3 slim cuz i feel it is better. got 250 gb hdd from western digital, i do have ps3 slim but i just dont like it.
"It took some time to catch on" Are you talking about America or Europe and Japan? Because in Europe and Japan this thing flew off the shelves and still is now.
@Simplemindedgenius Hrm I didn't know that it was flying off the shelves in Europe on launch. Surprising really. I can understand Japan heck the PS2 flew off shelves in Japan just because it was a DVD player! But yeah over here in NA the launch year was pretty slow!
@MN12BIRD It's understandable really, The xbox is always going to be the favourite with NA because of who makes it, It's an "institution". Good piece of kit also, I have had both xbox's so far, and all 3 PS's. I really can't wait for the new generation now though. How much longer do you think it will be until the next xbox or PS is announced?
Ya but what if i dont want a blueray player? Its not like they can take it out so that shot the price up for no reason. Plus the blueray part is such a waste i can walk into walmart and get one now for 20$ that works just as well! They shouldnt have assumed people wanted that feature if the price would be so hi. And besides i never use my consoles to play movies i always have a seperate dvd or blueray player. Great video !
They used bluray thinking about the future, Killzone 3 will have 40 gbs, Uncharted 2 had 25, god of war 3 had 35, multiple CD's tone down the experience, make the games more expensive and lower the textures quality. And besides, there are very few bluray players better than the ones on the ps3.
I have a slim PS3 and I must say that I like the original model better. I notice that my slim runs a lot hotter than the original PS3's and I always make sure my gaming computer and consoles have good airflow. I think the only difference between the two is the fact that it's smaller.
@sonic3243 You are terribly wrong, the slim is cooler, more efficient and less expensive then the older model, if you touch the furniture or wall next to the ps3 and it's hot, that's a good thing, it means that the fans are doing their jobs. Besides, the ps3 slim is praticly ylod free...
The ps3 is more like a compact pc rather than a simple console, the xbox is a console because it has a lack of functionality, and it doesn't have a blue-ray reader.
@Zain844 Most PCs don't have Blu-Ray players because it's not something relevant for computers yet, since nothing but movies use Blu-Ray discs. But if someone needs a Blu-Ray drive, they can get one for $50.
As for games, unlike consoles, PCs only use the disc to install the game. After that one-time process, the game runs entirely from the hard drive. On PC, whether the game comes on a Blu-Ray, a DVD or a CD is irrelevant.
Ryuuken24 is trying to argue that the PS3 is more like a PC then a console. He implies that PS3 is somehow more advanced then the 360 because it has a blu ray player. Yet PC hardware is way more advanced then PS3 or 360 hardware and they don''t use blu ray for their games. and even on 360 you can install the games on your hard drive to. Futhermore, extra storage with blu ray is nice, but it takes literally 2 seconds to swap a disk.
Blu ray can store up to 50 gbs and it's faster than an HD DVD, so when it comes down to it, bluray is one of the strongest features in the ps3. And PC's aren't better than consoles, some PC's are better than consoles, but those will cost you 5 or 6 times more than the console itself....
@NewLynxChannel Whether or not the PS3 has more advanced hardware then the 360 is not the point. It's just that saying "PS3 is better because it has blu ray" is not a good argument. Since PC is apparently "top of the line" when it comes to hardware and they don't use blu ray. That's all I was trying to say.
@Zain844 I see. My mistake, it seems my comment was better off directed to him instead.
But just to clear one thing up, the consoles do copy files to the hard drive, but it's not the same as the installation process on a PC. Consoles only do it partially and still need the disc to run the games, while on PC, even though some developers require the disc to be in the drive, nothing is actually read from the disc.
I hate people who say PC's are superior to consoles. In 2005 I bought a Pentium 4 for 900 euros, and I can't run crysis in it(jk I can at 5fps with minimum graphics quality). So no, PC is not a better gaming platform than a console, you can buy a 5000 euros PC and run Battlefield BC2 maxed out in it and it may look better than it does on ps3 or xbox360, but the difference will be minimal. And btw, you will have to continue upgrading until you finally decide to buy a console
It's the exact oposite... The xbox hardware is like a modified computer...The ps3 on the other hand has a cpu with totally different architecture and a gpu specificly designed for the ps3...
@RapturousDemise Neither Sony or Toshiba have development facilities for microchips like Cell. They didn't "make their own CPU", they comissioned IBM to do it. Which is why the "Cell" brand is owned by IBM only and not by Sony or Toshiba.
@RapturousDemise They helped financing the project, and probably helped with the design as well, since as a comissioner they were allowed to set their own goals for the microchip. In other words, they did the thinking, while IBM did the "manual work".
@RapturousDemise They did take part in the project. But the development and manufacturing process of the microchips was handled by IBM only, since Sony doesn't make processors and Toshiba only makes portable, low-power ones.
It goes further. IBM, just like Intel, doesn't have the facilities to manufacture processors in large scale, only small quantities to use as prototypes and engineering samples. So the actual manufacturing is done by a semiconductor foundry like TSMC or GlobalFoundries (which is owned by AMD, making it a nice scenario where IBM hires AMD to manufacture their own competition).
It's just like Microsoft hiring a Japanese company (ATI) to develop their GPU and Sony hiring an American company (nVidia) to develop their gpu... The world is funny lol...
FINAL FANTASY FTW! that the main reason besides say metal gear solid / kingdom hearts 3 that i would buy a ps3 right now its all abouth the xbox 360 and gears of war series man that and cal of duty but that not exclusive ...i just prefer the xbox controller over ps2 for those games
I like what they did with the L2 and R2 buttons, but I wish they had a claw shaped contour to them. I find my finger slipping off if i'm trying to be quick.
If you're using the controller in a shooter game, the xbox triggers are more usefull than the ps3's, because they look more like...triggers...
But if you play racing games, the ps3 controller triggers give you more sensitivity than the xbox triggers. And besides, you can use R1 and L1 on the ps3 as triggers...
You're absolutely right about the vibration lawsuit Sony had with a company called Immersion who claimed to have designed the vibration technology that Sony had used in Dualshock pads 1 and 2. Even more interesting, Sony claimed that they removed vibration for the PS3 pads due to it interfering with the six axis function. This of course is not true but it did sound plausible at the time.
@ModernRelik I was really bummed when sony opted not to put rumble in the ps3 controller. I was so happy when they finally started making dualshock 3 sixaxis controllers and imported one of the first black ones from japan and still use it daily. Love the ps3.
From a hardware point of view, both PS3 and 360 are very interesting. 360 with its custom tri-core Power CPU with SMT (6 threads) and PS3 with the Cell BE which took an approach similar to GPGPU today with its SPEs.
Funny that Microsoft and IBM beat AMD/Intel to creating the first "APU" too, with the 45nm Vejle chip powering the 360 Slim
It's a shame we live in a world ruled by x86 on the PC!!
@Aaronage1, x86 being so prevalent is a shame indeed, but, I'm not much of a POWER and PowerPC fan either. I had an IBM POWER4 (semi-recent) system and I absolutely hated it. I find PPC bloated, to be honest. With huge amounts of cache memories and at insane clock frequencies, barely beating much lower-clocked Itaniums.
MIPS is also a great architecture (as in the PSX, N64, PS2, PSP, etc.) and still capable, as seen in high-end switches and routers (which employ multi-core MIPS64 CPUs).
I had to buy one of the original 60gb versions shortly after launch for $599.99. I felt like I owed sony since the PS2 brought me so much enjoyment over the years and I knew the ps3 would eventually be worth the money. Now after 4 years I think the ps3 has the best library of games available as did the ps2 did last gen. It has tons of games for every genre. I've since upgraded my hdd to a 500gb wd scorpio blue and system is going strong. For the record I'm now on my 4th 360.
@wasapamati Yeah, that's what bothers me about ALL of Sony consoles. To tell you the truth, Sony doesn't like to think outside the box, IMO.
All the stuff they've made were sort of ripped off of other companies. (with the rare exception of gaming experience fiasco, EyeToy) They rush into things a lot and don't concentrate on what truly matters: gamers.
Nonetheless, PS3: decent graphics, free online. Sounds good to me.
@zomgcontraishard i just wish there was a decent 3rd party alternative for controllers. The Afterglow one is about the best it gets unfortunately. It doesn't have wireless and the cable is about 2 feet long so you have to get some kind of extender just to use the thing w/o having to sit right in front of the TV which is dumb. I just wish Sony would make a new controller. Something a bit larger and more substantial with better triggers, etc.
@wasapamati Yes, it should be bigger, BUT they should might as well change everything.
I would like them to change the controller entirely, maybe have less buttons. If they could put more, that's okay, as long as it's simple and isn't like the original Xbox controller. That was a freak show.
interesting look at the PS3. Must completely disagree abut the controller though. It is absolutely horrible. A controller that was used for the PS1 still being used today is not a positive. They have to update it, times change yet Sony hasn't changed their controller at all along the way. It is way too small, so small that I can barely use it for any length of time without my hands hurting. The triggers need to be concave b/c as of now my fingers just slip off them when playing GT5.
It's possible to have up to 7 controllers connected to a PS3, utilising the LEDs in the controllers (4+3). But hardly any games support more than 4....
@MaxB1195 Interesting. I remember hearing that when it came out because I thought it was really strange it would use 7 controllers and not 8 or even 6. So odd it takes 7.
@MN12BIRD, maybe 7 with zero-based numbering? (Like in the C language, for example the integers: 0 = 1, 1 = 2, ... etc. ... 7 = 8.) Perhaps, like with SCSI, 0 (= 1) is reserved for the system controller?
Serious Bird the PS3 is the biggest mistake in gaming since I don't even know. All they had to do was tripple the specs on the ps2 and add a way to block ps2 pirates and they would have being in the running but nooooo. they had to go with a new IBM processor. FAIL!
@owensoft Developers groaned about the Emotion Engine too you know, but that didn't stop PS2 from becoming the best selling console of all time. Cell was/is a challenge, but development tools have improved, developers now have a feel for the platform etc. I'm sure developing games that can efficiently use 6 threads on the 360 was a challenge at first too.
@Aaronage1 if they groaned about the emotion engine then why change it? why not just make it faster? Its a win-lose situation but a upgrade would have been more win since EVERYBODY KNOWS THE PS2 already.
@owensoft It wouldn't be possible to just beef up EE. The only option was to use a much more powerful modern design. Cell wasn't the safe option by any means, but it's a seriously powerful chip. Cell CPUs used in IBM supers have been benched at 100GFlops linpack, by comparison an Intel Core i7 quads are usually <60GFlops.
@thegamemuseum Are you sure about that? I know original BD-ROM specs are 25GB per layer (50GB dual layer) BUT recent upgrades to the spec are talking about new 66GB DL disks. From what I've seen a new directors cut version of MGS4 is coming out and that might be on one of these newer 66GB disks? Also some files are compressed on the disk so it's possible that uncompressed the entire game is 66GB or more but on the disk itself it's still under 50GB. ISO rips of the DL disk are apx 33GB.
My PS3's controller has the vibration function AND SIXAXIS function. Maybe that's because mine is an 80gb late fat models. But there was nothing saying PS1 games not working on even the new slim models. I wonder if it ran them off the PS2 chip or emulation.
Another great vid!!! I've been waiting a long time for this video. Is thisPS3 yours or your GF's? Either way, i look forward to some PS3 reviews now. Thanks
the 6axis controller without the dual shock is kinda a blessing in disguise,, as i use it more,, its lighter,, and im a bit over vibration... i dont even use the vibration anymore in the dreamcast,,, so im really glad they made they did that,,,
Thats true about the rumble feature lawsuit, although Sony said @ e3 when they announced it that force feedback was 'so last generation'. Funny how they changed their mind?! lol
I was one of the few people crazy enough to buy the 60GB model for $600 in the store. But I love it it works really well and I'm happy I can still play my PS2 games on it
The Xbox 360 isn't made with off-the-shelf parts. You're thinking of the Xbox which is made of a mobile Celeron and a GeForce 2/3 sort of hybrid chip. The Xbox 360 is made of a custom IBM PowerPC processor(which isn't too different from the Cell), and a custom ATI GPU. Also, I personally prefer Xbox 360, although I do have an 80GB non BC model. LastHour1 on both Live, and PSN, if anyone reads this...
@LastHour1 Damn now why was I thinking the 360 had an AMD CPU? My bad! Seriously I didn't realize it was PowerPC based too. So the Wii, 360 and PS3 are all PPC based! IBM must be lovin' it.
@MN12BIRD Nah it's a mistake a lot of people make. That's also why the Xbox 360 isn't fully backwards compatible; The Xbox 360 contains none of the original Xbox hardware because NVidia ceased production of the GPU after Microsoft asked for some huge discount on another run of chips. So, not only is the 360 PPC based, but the GPU's architecture is totally different too! Software FTL. Sad that Nintendo is the only one who got backwards compatibility right this generation. On their first try, too.
@LastHour1 Xbox 360's processor is indeed not commercially available, but its GPU is very similar to the Radeon X1K series. It's basically a R520-based GPU, only with unified shaders and 10 MB of embedded RAM on a secondary die.
@NewLynxChannel Huh. Never knew that. Thanks for the info! Either way, the GPU in all three systems can use a real kick in the pants. Games that look truly incredible look simply "meh" on Xbox 360 and PS3. Only upside to 360 over PC is the universal system, so no matter what game I buy, it'll play perfectly, and Xbox Live, which is worth it just to scream at the little kids who think they're tough shit cause they killed me once in CoD. I love Live!
XD review the slim version.1st the slim is aloooot lighter and smaller it is also better built and doesn't have a slight over heating issue(ohh Xbox in yo face RROD(red rings of death). oh yes and the buttons are now press buttons. and i think (if i remember correctly) the slim has faster wireless now(n)(8 cores nobody realy knows what the 8th one does)also you can connect up to 7 controllers at the same time(the only game that does (i know off) is the fifa series
@TheOverkill102 It doesn't have eight cores, it has one core (PPE) and seven SIMD units (SPEs). And the seventh SIMD unit is reverved for XMB, so no, people do know what it does.
I got my PlayStation back in Nov. 2007. I got the 80GB model that played PS2, PS1 games, has 4 USB ports, and chrome finish... im really glad i got mine when i did after i see all these other PS3s and what they cant do.
Glad to see you finally did the PS3 hardware review because feel you are one of the most informative console reviewers on youtube. Looking forward to the xbox360 review.
I want the original model of the PS3. I never knew it had more features than the version that's out now. You would think that it would be better now, but they downgraded the system since then...
@zillzultraboy Blame the people wineing "The ps3 is too expensive, wah wah wah" Sony responded by cutting out Backwards compatibility entirely, ie removing the emotion engine chip
Thanks man. Very helpfull. About to buy one and you had some good info in there. I got a Logitech G27 for Christmas so I can't wait to get it goin with GT5 on the PS3.
Connection speeds on a console are kind of a moot point once you start getting into the higher numbers but I just thought I would point out that the PS3 Slim has wireless N not G.
I find that the fact that most people will typically regard PS3/Xbox360 as "powerful" and their respective games as having impressive graphics to be very sad.
These are >= 4 years old systems, they are completely obsolete compared to a modern PC. These consoles hold back the gaming industry as a whole -- game engines are designed within the bounds set by the consoles, and then merely improved and adjusted somewhat for the PC. Obviously due to marketing/profit reasons.
@ioctlvoid well, some people don't want to pay hundreds of dollars and keep updating their buggy-ass pc to play a limmited amount of games with a shitty keybord and mouse, only so the graphics are unnoticeably better cause that is not what gaming is about. Who cares how powerful the consoles are, they play game perfectly fine and I think it is minds like yours that are holding back gaming
I'm a programmer and I mostly play games written for DOS from the early 90s, so please don't lecture me on that graphics is not the most important quality in a game.
Fact is that there are certain types of games that are impossible to create on the limited hardware that the PS3/Xbox360 offers, games that utilize GPGPU to do e.g. large scale fluid dynamics or demanding physics for things such as large, destructible worlds.
@ioctlvoid those things you mentioned tie in with graphics, don't they? i think it's better to buy a console and be set with great games for years instead of freaquently updating a PC and playing with the horrendous keybord and mouse, just to have better graphics. the stuff they do on consoles is pretty damn impressive, how much more do you need. and it doesn't matter for gaming, the best game I have played this year is donkey kong country returns on the least powerful console
The best games I have played are for DOS and third/fourth generation game consoles. That doesn't change the fact that development is good and that incredible graphics and completely new game mechanics are fascinating.
This generation of game consoles are holding back development on a scale that is unprecedented, mostly due to how capitalism works.
I'm not talking about optimal value for money in gaming, I'm talking about progress on a more general basis.
To be Fair, the 1st Gen 360's did have HDMI, but it was added later in it's life around Summer 07, beginning with the Xbox360 Elite and Halo 3 editions (such as my 360).
Add on top of that the failure rate of early 360's, I'd imagine there aren't many non-HDMI 1st Gen 360's left...
I was subscribed to egm or game pro and if i recall correct the reason the controllers didn't launch with rumble was because they said it interfered with the six axis function aside from the legal stuff
Jake i would highly recommend UNCHARTED: Drakes Fortune and UNCHARTED: Among Thieve. both are really great games and show off what the ps3 can do. they are developed by Naughty Dog, the creators of Crash Bandicoot 1, 2, 3, and CTR so the games are beautiful and extremely enjoyable.
I have the 60GB PS3 and I can sort of inform you of what Ports its got hidden in its door, theres a Compact Flash card slot, a normal SD Card slot and a Type 2 Microdrive. 60GB consoles can also be told apart by the front panel, that has a polished chrome finish rather than the matt grey.
No matter what system you use, the PS3 will play ALL PS1 games, even on the earlier models though some PS2 games will not play, The only oen i;ve come across that does not work is Junior Sports Basketball
I had a PS3, but it died. I loved it. My only complaint was the internal fans; every time the fans kicked in, I always thought the PS3's gonna burst into flames! I'm gonna get the slim model in 2011.
The reason why PS2 used the DVD's was because the games are bigger in size than the CD format that they had used for the PS1 games. So Sony took the advantage of also making there system to play DVD movies also!
I´m a Xbox 360 owner but, damn, this PS3 FAT (specially the old one with tons of USB ports and memory stick support) is a true state-of-the-art piece machine. Make me jealous everytime I see something about. The console looks solid and durable. I´m attached to Xbox 360 by the games and exclusives (fits my taste) but there are a lot o good games I would love to own on PS3: Valkyria Chronicles, Killzone. Great Review.
thats the asia version or?

499 bucks? Lol... Luxury. Here in Denmark, it was around 900-1000 bucks (5000-5500 Danish Kroner) at launch.
BGSpotlight 2 weeks ago
@BGSpotlight Damn! Are computer parts and most electronics that much more expensive there or was that a rare instance with the PS3?
MN12BIRD 2 weeks ago
@MN12BIRD That was no rare instance. Electronics in general are very expensive here, compared to the US and Asia.
For example: The new Radeon HD 7970 (From XFX) is around 600 bucks on newegg. The cheapest seller in Denmark currently sells it for 833 bucks. Depending on what you're going to buy, the margin could be smaller or bigger. But in general, it's always above the price in the US. And having it shipped is pretty much not an option. For such expensive parts... continued...
BGSpotlight 2 weeks ago
@MN12BIRD ... the government will add TAX/VAT + customs fees once it arrives in my country... And that additional cost usually makes shipping it from the US the worst attempt at saving money ever, since it could easily go above what it would initially cost to just buy the part in my country from the very beginning.
BGSpotlight 2 weeks ago
@MN12BIRD That hasn't stopped me from starting my very first gaming rig build, which will feature the i7-2700K + HD 7970 among other high-end things. It'll take a few months before I've got all the parts lined up though. It's expensive to be a hardcore PC gamer here =P

Well for those who ask how much it costs to make a ps3 it is around $200-210. What you pay extra is for the cable, controller and hdd that comes with it.

@MN12BIRD You're right, there is a short window right after the launch of a new generation of game consoles when they are the better buy, but that doesn't last very long. That window also coincides with the period of time after a launch when the manufacturer is actually losing money in order to keep the prices competitive. Once the product has been out for a while and in this case, they go from 90nm to 65nm to 45nm it gets cheaper to make and then the company is making lots of profit per unit..
psychoclown420 8 months ago
@psychoclown420 Yep Sony doesn't care if they make any money of the console. The more consoles they sell the more games they'll sell and they make money off every game sold. You're right they do loose money sometimes selling the console just to get more out there. They can get cheper to make in the long run as the die size goes down and production goes up. But they also sell cheaper now I mean what's a PS3 now less than $299.99? How much does Sony really make off that I wonder?
MN12BIRD 8 months ago
@MN12BIRD well the strategy is to lose money the first year in order to keep the price down and sell a lot of consoles to get popularity and developers on board, but after that they regain profit to pay off that year and of course the cost of R/D. This current batch of consoles was a very expensive R/D and launch and are therefore going to be around for a while. The tech is very cheap after several die shrinks and mass production and the xbox has the gpu and cpu on one chip now lol
psychoclown420 8 months ago
@MN12BIRD The PS3 was released on November 2006, not in 2005. And although quad-cores weren't popular yet (the Q6600 and Q6700 models were only released in January 2007), Conroe and Brisbane dual-core processors were already enough to outperform the PS3.
NewLynxS 6 months ago
@NewLynxS Yeah that was my mistake in the comments here. Not sure why I thought it was 2005 but it was 2006 you're right. I do think it's funny how some people think that the PS3 has 7 cores so it outperforms any quad core PC. LOL once again you're right about performance. They're comparing apples to donkeys there.
MN12BIRD 6 months ago
By the way you can turn the PS3 on or off remotely from the controller. This uses the Bluetooth feature of the controller. To turn on the system, you simply tap the PS button. To turn off the system, hold down the PS button then go to "Turn off the system".I use this feature a lot.
JAREDMICHALLE 8 months ago

"It took some time to catch on" Are you talking about America or Europe and Japan? Because in Europe and Japan this thing flew off the shelves and still is now.
Simplemindedgenius 10 months ago
@Simplemindedgenius Hrm I didn't know that it was flying off the shelves in Europe on launch. Surprising really. I can understand Japan heck the PS2 flew off shelves in Japan just because it was a DVD player! But yeah over here in NA the launch year was pretty slow!
MN12BIRD 10 months ago

DoctorJ1337 1 year ago
@DoctorJ1337
RapturousDemise 1 year ago
I have a slim PS3 and I must say that I like the original model better. I notice that my slim runs a lot hotter than the original PS3's and I always make sure my gaming computer and consoles have good airflow. I think the only difference between the two is the fact that it's smaller.
Great review!
sonic3243 1 year ago
@sonic3243 You are terribly wrong, the slim is cooler, more efficient and less expensive then the older model, if you touch the furniture or wall next to the ps3 and it's hot, that's a good thing, it means that the fans are doing their jobs. Besides, the ps3 slim is praticly ylod free...
RapturousDemise 1 year ago
The ps3 is more like a compact pc rather than a simple console, the xbox is a console because it has a lack of functionality, and it doesn't have a blue-ray reader.
Ryuuken24 1 year ago
@Ryuuken24 Alot of PCs don't even have blu ray readers. PC games are still using DVD
Zain844 1 year ago
@Zain844 Most PCs don't have Blu-Ray players because it's not something relevant for computers yet, since nothing but movies use Blu-Ray discs. But if someone needs a Blu-Ray drive, they can get one for $50.
As for games, unlike consoles, PCs only use the disc to install the game. After that one-time process, the game runs entirely from the hard drive. On PC, whether the game comes on a Blu-Ray, a DVD or a CD is irrelevant.
NewLynxChannel 1 year ago
@NewLynxChannel I think you missed my point
Ryuuken24 is trying to argue that the PS3 is more like a PC then a console. He implies that PS3 is somehow more advanced then the 360 because it has a blu ray player. Yet PC hardware is way more advanced then PS3 or 360 hardware and they don''t use blu ray for their games. and even on 360 you can install the games on your hard drive to. Futhermore, extra storage with blu ray is nice, but it takes literally 2 seconds to swap a disk.
Zain844 1 year ago
@Zain844
Blu ray can store up to 50 gbs and it's faster than an HD DVD, so when it comes down to it, bluray is one of the strongest features in the ps3. And PC's aren't better than consoles, some PC's are better than consoles, but those will cost you 5 or 6 times more than the console itself....
RapturousDemise 1 year ago
@NewLynxChannel Whether or not the PS3 has more advanced hardware then the 360 is not the point. It's just that saying "PS3 is better because it has blu ray" is not a good argument. Since PC is apparently "top of the line" when it comes to hardware and they don't use blu ray. That's all I was trying to say.
Zain844 1 year ago
@Zain844 I see. My mistake, it seems my comment was better off directed to him instead.
But just to clear one thing up, the consoles do copy files to the hard drive, but it's not the same as the installation process on a PC. Consoles only do it partially and still need the disc to run the games, while on PC, even though some developers require the disc to be in the drive, nothing is actually read from the disc.
NewLynxChannel 1 year ago
@Zain844
RapturousDemise 1 year ago

It's the exact oposite... The xbox hardware is like a modified computer...The ps3 on the other hand has a cpu with totally different architecture and a gpu specificly designed for the ps3...

@Ryuuken24
lol sony developed the cell with toshiba in 2000, so yeah they made their own cpu...
RapturousDemise 1 year ago
@RapturousDemise Neither Sony or Toshiba have development facilities for microchips like Cell. They didn't "make their own CPU", they comissioned IBM to do it. Which is why the "Cell" brand is owned by IBM only and not by Sony or Toshiba.
NewLynxChannel 1 year ago
@NewLynxChannel
so what does toshiba have to do with cell?
RapturousDemise 1 year ago
@RapturousDemise They helped financing the project, and probably helped with the design as well, since as a comissioner they were allowed to set their own goals for the microchip. In other words, they did the thinking, while IBM did the "manual work".
NewLynxChannel 1 year ago
@NewLynxChannel So you're saying Sony financed the whole thing but didn't really take part in the project?
RapturousDemise 1 year ago
@RapturousDemise They did take part in the project. But the development and manufacturing process of the microchips was handled by IBM only, since Sony doesn't make processors and Toshiba only makes portable, low-power ones.
NewLynxChannel 1 year ago
@NewLynxChannel
The volkswagen of the PC's lol...
RapturousDemise 1 year ago
@RapturousDemise Exactly =D
NewLynxChannel 1 year ago
@NewLynxChannel
LOL
It's just like Microsoft hiring a Japanese company (ATI) to develop their GPU and Sony hiring an American company (nVidia) to develop their gpu... The world is funny lol...

Great video Jake as always.
ModernRelik 1 year ago

Aaronage1 1 year ago

MN12BIRD 1 year ago
@wasapamati Yeah, that's what bothers me about ALL of Sony consoles. To tell you the truth, Sony doesn't like to think outside the box, IMO.
All the stuff they've made were sort of ripped off of other companies. (with the rare exception of gaming experience fiasco, EyeToy) They rush into things a lot and don't concentrate on what truly matters: gamers.
Nonetheless, PS3: decent graphics, free online. Sounds good to me.
zomgcontraishard 1 year ago
@zomgcontraishard i just wish there was a decent 3rd party alternative for controllers. The Afterglow one is about the best it gets unfortunately. It doesn't have wireless and the cable is about 2 feet long so you have to get some kind of extender just to use the thing w/o having to sit right in front of the TV which is dumb. I just wish Sony would make a new controller. Something a bit larger and more substantial with better triggers, etc.
wasapamati 1 year ago
@wasapamati Yes, it should be bigger, BUT they should might as well change everything.
I would like them to change the controller entirely, maybe have less buttons. If they could put more, that's okay, as long as it's simple and isn't like the original Xbox controller. That was a freak show.
zomgcontraishard 1 year ago
interesting look at the PS3. The triggers need to be concave b/c as of now my fingers just slip off them when playing GT5.
wasapamati 1 year ago
It's possible to have up to 7 controllers connected to a PS3, utilising the LEDs in the controllers (4+3). But hardly any games support more than 4....
MaxB1195 1 year ago
@MaxB1195 Interesting. I remember hearing that when it came out because I thought it was really strange it would use 7 controllers and not 8 or even 6. So odd it takes 7.
MN12BIRD 1 year ago
@MN12BIRD, maybe 7 with zero-based numbering? (Like in the C language, for example the integers: 0 = 1, 1 = 2, ... etc. ... 7 = 8.) Perhaps, like with SCSI, 0 (= 1) is reserved for the system controller?

Serious Bird the PS3 is the biggest mistake in gaming since I don't even know. All they had to do was tripple the specs on the ps2 and add a way to block ps2 pirates and they would have being in the running but nooooo. they had to go with a new IBM processor. FAIL!
owensoft 1 year ago
@owensoft How in the hell is the PS3 a mistake? It's an excellent system.
Djmarcod 1 year ago
@owensoft Developers groaned about the Emotion Engine too you know, but that didn't stop PS2 from becoming the best selling console of all time. Cell was/is a challenge, but development tools have improved, developers now have a feel for the platform etc. I'm sure developing games that can efficiently use 6 threads on the 360 was a challenge at first too.
Aaronage1 1 year ago
@Aaronage1 if they groaned about the emotion engine then why change it? why not just make it faster? Its a win-lose situation but a upgrade would have been more win since EVERYBODY KNOWS THE PS2 already.
owensoft 1 year ago
@owensoft It wouldn't be possible to just beef up EE. The only option was to use a much more powerful modern design. Cell wasn't the safe option by any means, but it's a seriously powerful chip. Cell CPUs used in IBM supers have been benched at 100GFlops linpack, by comparison an Intel Core i7 quads are usually <60GFlops.

just wanted to note that the dual layer bluray disc actually can store 66 gigabytes and MGS4 fills all of the 66 gigs awesome review mn12bird!
thegamemuseum 1 year ago
@thegamemuseum Are you sure about that? I know original BD-ROM specs are 25GB per layer (50GB dual layer) BUT recent upgrades to the spec are talking about new 66GB DL disks. From what I've seen a new directors cut version of MGS4 is coming out and that might be on one of these newer 66GB disks? Also some files are compressed on the disk so it's possible that uncompressed the entire game is 66GB or more but on the disk itself it's still under 50GB. ISO rips of the DL disk are apx 33GB.

LastHour1 1 year ago
@LastHour1 Damn now why was I thinking the 360 had an AMD CPU? My bad! Seriously I didn't realize it was PowerPC based too. So the Wii, 360 and PS3 are all PPC based! IBM must be lovin' it.
MN12BIRD 1 year ago
@MN12BIRD Nah it's a mistake a lot of people make. That's also why the Xbox 360 isn't fully backwards compatible; The Xbox 360 contains none of the original Xbox hardware because NVidia ceased production of the GPU after Microsoft asked for some huge discount on another run of chips. So, not only is the 360 PPC based, but the GPU's architecture is totally different too! Software FTL. Sad that Nintendo is the only one who got backwards compatibility right this generation. On their first try, too.
LastHour1 1 year ago
@LastHour1 Xbox 360's processor is indeed not commercially available, but its GPU is very similar to the Radeon X1K series. It's basically a R520-based GPU, only with unified shaders and 10 MB of embedded RAM on a secondary die.
NewLynxChannel 1 year ago
@NewLynxChannel Huh. Never knew that. Thanks for the info! Either way, the GPU in all three systems can use a real kick in the pants. Games that look truly incredible look simply "meh" on Xbox 360 and PS3. Only upside to 360 over PC is the universal system, so no matter what game I buy, it'll play perfectly, and Xbox Live, which is worth it just to scream at the little kids who think they're tough shit cause they killed me once in CoD. I love Live!

@ioctlvoid not everyone can afford a "modern pc" asshole. get a life.

@seanvan331 you tell that asshole!

Even an older PC is vastly superior to the current generations of consoles, a lot has happened in four years. It doesn't have to be a brand new PC.
E.g. even a mediocre gaming PC a year old would easily beat a PS3 in terms of potential.

@bluedarknut

@bluedarknut

@nufcdazzla Gran Turismo 3 would not work on my uncles ps3. it might just be the game though

So Sony took the advantage of also making there system to play DVD movies also!

if you have the fat ps3 standing up the logo can turn to make it look proper

I´m a Xbox 360 owner but, damn, this PS3 FAT (specially the old one with tons of USB ports and memory stick support) is a true state-of-the-art piece machine. Make me jealous everytime I see something about. The console looks solid and durable. I´m attached to Xbox 360 by the games and exclusives (fits my taste) but there are a lot o good games I would love to own on PS3: Valkyria Chronicles, Killzone. Great Review.
