  • Thin Lizzy first line for Sure!!!!! E.B.!!!!!!

  • Eric Bell, Philo was AWESOME!!!!!

  • if all the hippies cut off their hair i don't give a fuck

  • 100% DOWNEY!!

  • Downey could certainly play this. He is a monster drummer when he wants to be.

  • I have this song and I was gonna upload it also. Be good to see more links up for this song as it`s rare.

  • this is the song I'm looking for.

  • As to whether it's Nauseef or Downey: listen to the fills on some of the later Lizzy records, which are closer date-wise to when this song was recorded -- especially "Romeo and the Lonely Girl"...sounds like Downey to me, even down to the tone of the snare.

  • This track is from 1981 - not 1980.

And I'm not knocking you blacksabfan, but just to let people know that the version that was available on the boxset is the same version, but is a bit clearer than this. This seems a little muddy.

The credits do say Downey. But woah - it does sound so much like Mark Nauseef on drums. The whole thing is incredibly similar to 'Talk in 79' off Phil's solo album which was done around the same period. Plus Phil did continue some work with Nauseef...

    Weird...

  • I believe this was an outtake from Lynott's second solo album sessions, just compare the drum sound and drumming style to "Gino" where Nauseef also plays.

The credit on the boxset might be a mistake, those liner notes look like they have been done in a hurry! Anyway, it's Nauseef, if you ask me.

  • @DeluxeReissue released in 81. recorded in 80

  • sounds like MN to me

  • Sorry I'm late to the party, but listening to the drum fills on the end, that's Brian Downey (The Man) they're basically a different variation of the fills he did on "Bad Reputation" Great song! Thanx for sharing this

  • Without doubt it is Downey,Mitchell was a huge influence on Downey. It is self evident.

I am a student of Downey, it is not a case of whom the better drummer is but who fits the standard of Mitch, and there is only one conclusion

  • I have this song on an orange flexi disc that came in an old magazine with 3 other bands.

  • Pretty sure its downey on drums.

The release name on this was Song for Jimmy, Philo was majorly pissed off at the type-o, but what can ya do when people make mistakes??

  • Instead of money, why doesn't someone show me physical or written proof? It's all I've asked for from day one.

Again, not saying you're wrong. But the credits say it was Downey. Are they wrong? Maybe, but I've never seen anything to confirm that this is Nauseef instead.

  • i emailed mark nauseef with the link to this to ask him if this is him playing!!!

if its not i apologise; this recording is still amazing; thanks for posting

i play drums myself; i'm off with the laptop into the shed right now to play along to this song; as it is drummer heaven

  • If he emails back, be sure to let us all know.

  • I've always thought that the drumming was adventurous, ala Nauseef. It would be very interesting if it turned out to be nauseef.

  • this sounds bigtime like mark nausseef...same ride cymbal pattern/ and general style thats on "talk in '79"

ps 1.53 the line is "i used to live in a room full of mirrors..."

  • i dont doubt that this is brian downey on drums. downey was and id say still is an amazing drummer. someone should do a Song For Philo for his 30th anniversary. :) i'll try my best

  • I absolutely love this song

I love Jimi Hendrix and Thin Lizzy, so Phil and the boys doing this was great :)

But does anyone know where i can get the lyrics for this song?

  • Have you ever been experienced?... Well I have. What a tune. Thanks very much for uploading. Incredible

  • love this song thankyou xxx

  • No offense, but Bell had said that Downey played drums on this, so why is it so hard to believe that a drummer with Downey's skill could play something that sounds similar to Nauseef's style? I'm not trying to get into an argument, I'm just going by what I've seen and heard and I don't really have any reason to doubt that information. I'm not a drummer, but is drumming really THAT different when you talk about professionals? I thought good drummers would drum to what the song called for.

  • Also, if the few of you think so much that this is Mark Nauseef, how come you're not really proving it? I'd love to see a legitimate article or an interview that claims he was the drummer on this track.

  • Can we just calm down and enjoy the song... so what it's a little misunderstanding plus both Downey and Nauseef are good enough to play this and who cares really who played on it, thats all just trivial stuff, it's a tribute for Jimi's sake man enjoy it.

  • and one more thing ( this is just because I wanted to say this ) HELL THAT COULD BE FUCKING MITCH MITCHELL PLAYING THE DAMN DRUMS FOR ALL WE KNOW LITSEN TO THAT CRAZYNESS WHO EVER IS PLAYING IS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!

  • nauseef was just a tour stand in for downey i dont think he did record anything with them, and that was in 78, downey was back playing with lizzy later on that year.

  • Everyone did thier part on this song.

Phil was superb as usual,Eric was sounding good and old school and Brian just flat tore it up.

Thanks for sharing this.I am a huge Thin Lizzy fan but this was new to me. Great stuff.

  • Downey that is.

  • 100% Downey

  • I like the quote Phil does in the beginning from Jimi's ''If 6 was 9'' .. Awesome <3

  • love this song bloody number 1 i my eyes. Yes I think Phil could sound like Jimi. two brilliant legends taking from us. R I P Phil Lynott. R I P Jimi Hendrix. stone freee ride the breeeze.

  • PHIL COULD SOUND LIKE JIMI

  • I swear those two are extremly similar but they were in different time eras and different places scary isnt it

  • Wasn't Midge Ure involved with this release ?

  • Um, I'm not sure. I know him and Lynott redid "Dublin" around the same time...someone else probably knows better than I do.

  • Says in the 4 disc book, Downey/Bell/Lynott.

First released on Flexi Disc 1981 on the cover of Flexipop magazine.

    Very cool.

I'm not 100% but I think this is different from the flexi disc ???

  • Yes this is quite a bit different from the flexi. Makes me want to dig it out and play it again..no wait, I would need to buy a deck!

Thanks for putting this online. Love Brian Downey's work on this track.

  • Fantastic quality. I know this song but by far worse in sound-quality.

BUT! To me it is the drumstyle of Mark Naussef. I´m quite sure concerning his Hihat-phrases, typical nauseef fills and inflationary :-) use of crashes. What makes you believe that it might be Downey?

  • Credits. As Lynottfan4 says below. Peter Neilsen's Thin Lizzy Guide says the same thing. I'm just going by what I see elsewhere. I'm not a drummer so I don't really pick up on drum styles unless its blatantly obvious.

I've never heard the flexi disc version, but it's on the Philip: The Man and his Music 7 disc bootleg set. I'll have to see if I can get that track and listen to it.

  • I think you are right ! That sounds much more like Nauseef...Downey was never that crisp...watch nauseef with Lizzy in Sydney 1978 or on G Force.

  • i think hes probably trying to imitate mitch mitchell. neat song!

  • WOW! Never heard this one before!

    Great vibe.

    PEACE

  • Cool post. Actually didnt know Bell played on this one., But thats appropriate.

Sad that movie project with Phil starrin' as Jimi didnt take place.
