  • I'm a little off topic here, but where did you get that poster?

  • @crystalship1967 I actually just found a picture online and then ordered it from my iPhoto.

  • they're so expensive!

  • i finally own a monterey fuzz, i love it, my favorite fuzz of my collection, got it for $230 which is way more than it retailed from bob, i also have the new mjm london, very high gain, very smooth, i have the deep trip bog fuzz, very lower order harmonic rich, i have the dunlop blue jh-f1, not too gainy, not too fat, sounds like rainbow bridge, but i think my monterey is the most hendrix sounding, right amount of fuzz, and clean, and gain, and harmonics

  • do either one occillate when using a fuzz in front of them? (you know, that sometimes annoying screech that squeaks out)

  • sell me your monterey

  • how about the London fuzz guys?

  • @Silencer84 The London is great check my videos list I did one with the London a while ago!

  • i was wondering (because dunlop customer service sucks) if using a my dunlop DC brick power supply with my germanium fuzz will cause damage to my power supply? thanks and great demo.

  • @coughlintm Not that I know of.

  • @coughlintm It might depending on the make of your fuzz. Alot of vintage (and vintage correct) germanium fuzzes have reverse polarity on the dc-input so you can damage it if you plug it into your Dunlop brick (because it daisy chains the pedals)

You can use a voodoolab power-box or a standalone powersupply to powerjust that fuzz and you'll be fine.

  • have you tried any BYOC stuff?

  • Thanks for making this demo playing these fuzz's I enjoyed it. The 69 sounds great. I should have never sold mine like 5-6 years ago because it sounded killer live . Right now I am using a red dot nkt sunface. I still want to find a nice sounding 69 though.

  • Yea, the '69 is awesome! The Contour and Bias knobs make a huge difference! Both are incredibly useful. Outstanding pedal!

  • ..and thanks for the comment! :) I'm glad you like it!

  • can anyone tell me what the best fuzz for getting a sound similar to this would be?

    watch?v=yHjsgPmD6dE

I know he's using a germanium fuzz face, but I think there are many clones better than dunlop's red reissues

  • Try a MJM London Fuzz or an Analogman germanium Sunface!

  • @mrcali68 How do you like the 69 vs the Sunface nkt275?

  • @skurtix Both are GREAT! The '69 is obviously more versatile but the Sunface just drips with vintage-ness :)

  • @mrcali68 Awesome. Because I have the nkt275 already :)

  • Man, I had a Monterey a while back and sold it- big mistake! I have an MJM London w/ bias now which is awesome, but very different sounding. I'd love to try a '69...

  • if you know how to solder, these are the easiest pedals to make. Can experiment with transistors, etc. and get EXACTLY the sound you want. I built a Fulltone 69 from a General Guitar Gadgets kit and love it.

  • @tjk3052 Getting authentic old diodes is pretty difficult if you're just looking to buy a few and not hundreds at a time though.

Most single nos diodes sold on ebay are forged

  • @skurtix There are no diodes in a fuzz face circuit. If you mean the transistors, there are legit places to by germ transistors, I don't buy components on ebay. Try Smallbear or Pedalpartsplus.

  • @tjk3052 Yeah, my bad! There are germanium transistors available, but not the models you ideally want for a fuzz face. Pedalpartsplus for example only have the 2n388 germanium transistor which was never used in the original fuzzfaces.

It doesn't mean those transistors are bad, there are many cool ones, but they don't sound like the real germanium fuzzfaces.. for that you're going to want something like an old NKT275 - and finding good ones without leakage in single pieces isn't an easy process.

  • mrcali68, have you ever played a Frantone Cream Puff?

  • No but I've heard great things about that pedal!

  • Hi, I want to buy a fuzz pedal, but unfortunately I live in Europe, so i can't have the monterey fuzz. Do you think that the fulltone is better than the mjm london II ? And is your Blues Junior the one with a jensen C12N speaker ?

Thank you, cool demo, and sorry for my english ^^

  • I think fulltone only ships in the U.S. I prefer the london 1 myself. The London 2 uses silicon transistors, but its much warmer than a regular silicon fuzz.

  • why can'T you?

  • Because SweetSound don't ship to Europe, because of some shipping rules of the European Union...

  • try put volume all the way and fuzz at half, fuzz peal sound better boosting the amp

  • they dont make the 69 anymore do they?

  • Unfortunately they don't but you can usually find these on ebay pretty often.

  • dude, just wondering if you've tried the jimi dallas fuzz face, the regular fuzz face, and the new MXR 108 silicon?? wondering what your thoughts are and if you'd still recommend these two pedals over those.

  • I've never tried either of those but I love the JH-F1!! It's one of the best fuzz pedals I own. Great price, amazing tone, cleans up great, designed and built by one of the best pedal builders of all time (George Tripps). That pedal smokes! I'd recommend it over both of these on the clip.

  • Were you aware that if you actually use one of the other pu's that you can get a different sound out of your guitar? And that would be appropriate in one of these 'shootout' type of videos. It didn't help me any, but thanks for posting-

  • HA! Uhm... yes ...I was aware of that. :) When I use a germanium fuzz I like to accentuate the "creamy" nature of those transistors, that's why I used the neck pick up instead of the bridge. I guess I got kinda caught up in that tone for this clip. I should have used the bridge but I guess I just spaced. :) Glad you liked it!

  • bridge pickup please

  • The recommended Hendrix settings!

  • Yep, that's what it says in the manual.

  • Have you played the fulltone '70? It's the best silicon transistor fuzz I've ever played. I wish they still made the '69 though, I heard those were awesome.

  • Hi sorry for the delayed response. Yes I have played the 70 but of the two I prefer the '69. The 69 cleans up better than any other Germanium I have ever played. The Monterey is a VERY close second for clean up.

Honestly for Silicon greatness I REALLY like the Dunlop Hendrix reissue. It's huge but the tone is awesome!

  • I've heard that the 69 cleans up well, I wish they still made it....

  • You can usually find them on ebay or on The Gear Page.

  • Im gonna have to go with the Monterey Fuzz.

  • It's tough I go back and forth. The Monterey is so smooth but the Fulltone has so many different tonal options. They're both great. ...but have you heard a London Fuzz yet? That's my new favorite

  • Great job man. After seing this I ordered the Fulltone.

    Sweet sound too;)

  • I preferred the 69 Fulltone in this video. Can you tell me which model Strat you are using there and if the pickups are stock or upgraded?

  • Hi, that's actually a '59 Nash Strat. One of the best guitars I have ever owned. The pickups are blackface Lollars which do come stock with that model.

  • if you want a great dirty, fuzzy sound, you've got to get a good tube amp, use the clean channel, and get an analog fuzz pedal, i.e. the arbiter fuzz face, which is actually what hendrix used, you guys have got to get away from all these digital imitations, THEY SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I totally agree...digital fuzz pedals suck BUT neither one of these amazing pedals are digital. They are both the finest examples of what true to spec fuzz face clones can be.

FYI Hendrix ran the Fuzz Face into an extremely cranked Marshall Plexi that was already at natural OD. Running a fuzz pedal into a dead clean amp usually sounds terrible...it's always best to have the amp just on the verge of break up to maximize the tone of the pedal.

  • I compared the full fuzz chords, and full fuzz up the neck by jumping the video.

When you compare the full fuzz chords the 69 is more crackly distorted like the clashing low harmonics distorting, the Montery is very slightly smoother.

When I compared the full fuzz higher notes they were exactly the same on both pedals.

  • Nice vibrato.

  • How well does the Monterey Fuzz retain bass frequencies?

  • Very well! It stays nice and thick. It's also THE most quiet fuzz I have ever heard.

  • Fulltone sounds fatter maybe it's the contour function..but i liked the mess of 69 better..great clip btw

  • Yeah, I was noticing how much I liked the sustain in the Monterey Fuzz before you mentioned it.
