Marriage comes from men making sure certain children are theirs, it was around before the Christian religion.
Sounds like you're talking about civil unions, or at the very least common-law partners. A good start, but still doesn't cover the fact some people should be allowed to combine their households as any man and woman could, be it through a church or courthouse. It's really civil rights.
Besides, we all know it'd lower divorce rates =^.^=
I actually have a VERY similar opinion on this, I think in this day and age we should have evolved past bringing religion into this matter(we aren't just freak puritans anymore, peoples!), we're a multi religion/cultural society, we really need to adapt our system to peoples needs, take gender and procreation out of the equation, marriage and religion too and focus on what's really needed, partnership is a great term for it, why can't we be rewarded for being together and helping each other out?
