HEY, THERE'S AN EASY WAY TO GET A NETHER PORTAL w/o diamonds:

Use a lava bucket, and make a "mold" - an empty block surrounded by something easily removable like sand, fill the mold, and the put water on the top. Take your water up, and BAM! instant obsidian where the lava was. repeat by putting new molds in a portal shape. Will only work with source lava blocks, so you need lava every time you make a mold. You need iron, but not dimmy with this!
