It's funny how I never really noticed while growing up in the 70's how endearing this song is. It is one of Steve's off-springs that few truly appreciated so many years ago. It has become more beautiful as time has passed.
I truly hope that at some point Steve Perry comes out of retirement and at least do a U..S. tour, for all the millions and millions of fans to enjoy. Steve Perry you are such a gifted man with a golden voice.

This was the first song he wrote (with/for) Journey...sitting in a hotel room with the others trying to decide if they wanted him or not and is about his yearning to be in the band and his longing to make it in the music business. Wish I could remember where I read this interview so I could reference it for ya...but if you're a Perry fan, you'll find it. He says that this song reflects what's going on in his heart at that time. Steve Perry...the voice...forever. We miss you Stevie!

I do agree. Arnel seems to be having problems with showing emotions like Perry. But then again, Perry wrote all these songs and so they have a different meaning to him I guess. Plus it kind of IS true. Half of all hits of the 80s are by Journey and Perry. The other half belongs to Queen...awesome bands...truely awesome
That said, I've just seen Journey with Arnel Pineda twice, and was totally blown away. Arnel is not the same, but he does a pretty good job at interpreting both old and new Journey anthems. He convinced me, and more importantly, he convinced Schon and the others.
Comparing Arnel and Steve is trivial. I like apples AND oranges, but they are not the same thing.
completely agree, no one has a voice like Steve Perry, it's brilliant. He can rock us off our asses & then turn around & touch your heart so deeply you (or at least myself) can't help shedding some tears. Journey was/ix my bad, my boyz, their music still revs me up & Steve brought so much more to the table than a voice..he brought heart, soul, sincerity, beauty, joy, fun & awesome memories, to have that gift must be extraordianary. One of my biggest regrets is never seeing Journey live. I was a little kid when they were huge, and they had long broken up by the time I could attend rock concerts. However, I was lucky enough to catch a Steve Perry show in the early 90's at the Pantages. It was so awesome. For me, Steve Perry is 95% Journey anyway. I wouldn't see a Journey show without Steve Perry singing. That's like... Oreos without filling. Mulder without Scully. Magic Mountain without roller coasters.
Let's all respect all artists out there! Please make peace and not negativities. I grew up listening to Journey way before he was indoctrinated into Journey as the new frontman. I also play lots of Journey's music on my acoustic guitar way way before many of you existed. I also had predicted their names of their records way before it was released into the market. I predicted that from Escape-Captured-Departed. Arnel Pineda has been a huge fan of Steve/Journey @13yrs old. He gets $3US a nyt .
i love steve perry but thought his best work was with Journey. this was just a fluke - getting the right mix of songwriting, incredible musicians and the best singer on the planet in the 80's... it just worked! i miss SP but will look forward to seeing Journey this June in the UK.

Im a Steve Perry fan, not a journey fan, they were just back up to an incredible voice and talent called Steve Ray Pereira born of Portugese Parents, in Hanford Calif. on a farm. He was not born Steve Perry of Journey. It was my own personal belief and opinion that he cant shake the Journey years and anything he records will always be compared to Journey. When in fact, I love his solo stuff better and it takes you to a higher place of songwriting.

I have seen every Journey tour thru Raised on Radio. Perry is an incredible singer. But let's bear in mind, the success was from the bands success. Neither have done as well without the other. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

That's so cool how Steve holds the note while Neal switches from acoustic to electric. This is an outstanding performance by a great band with it's best lineup. Let's not forget the vocal talent of Greg Rollie (just the same way) and others he performed with Perry. Funny how replacement vocalists (with any band) are never as good as the original, kind of like when a step-parent moves into the house. Maybe because they were never involved with the writing of the music and lyrics?

Haven't had the pleasure of seeing the new guy yet, but after recently buying a Robert Fleischman CD I wonder what would of happened if he would of stayed on? I attended this Concert in 1978 at the Alladin Hotel. Journey Rocked that building. Brings back so many memories. I was 17 then. That was one of the baddest Concerts I've ever seen. Great sound and acoustics. Loud, Proud Harmonized Melody. Them were the days!!!!!

One of my biggest regrets is never seeing Journey live. I was a little kid when they were huge, and they had long broken up by the time I could attend rock concerts. However, I was lucky enough to catch a Steve Perry show in the early 90's at the Pantages. It was so awesome. For me, Steve Perry is 95% Journey anyway. I wouldn't see a Journey show without Steve Perry singing. That's like... Oreos without filling. Mulder without Scully. Magic Mountain without roller coasters.

Let's all respect all artists out there! Please make peace and not negativities. I grew up listening to Journey way before he was indoctrinated into Journey as the new frontman. I also play lots of Journey's music on my acoustic guitar way way before many of you existed. I also had predicted their names of their records way before it was released into the market. I predicted that from Escape-Captured-Departed. Arnel Pineda has been a huge fan of Steve/Journey @13yrs old. He gets $3US a nyt .

i love steve perry but thought his best work was with Journey. this was just a fluke - getting the right mix of songwriting, incredible musicians and the best singer on the planet in the 80's... it just worked! i miss SP but will look forward to seeing Journey this June in the UK.

You guys have to get over Journey..... Im a Steve Perry fan, not a journey fan, they were just back up to an incredible voice and talent called Steve Ray Pereira born of Portugese Parents, in Hanford Calif. on a farm. He was not born Steve Perry of Journey. It was my own personal belief and opinion that he cant shake the Journey years and anything he records will always be compared to Journey. When in fact, I love his solo stuff better and it takes you to a higher place of songwriting.

Arnel Pineda is crap, no one can replace Steve Perry. Neil, John & Ross are making plenty money off his back. But I bet Journey with Steve would way outsell Journey now.

NO ONE sings like Stevie.....and this is early Steve w/ Journey. Night after night he rocked it out for YEARS!!!!! Don't worry about Steve though....he's laughing all the way to the bank. He wrote most of the songs, so no matter who is trying to sing them, he is doing just fine. I say- if you wanna sing again - we'd love you to sing....and if you wanna sit on your ass - SIT!!!!

@mannym2010 i agree. arnel is an ok singer, and i don't mind when he sings songs that he wrote with the band, like "After all these years", but when he tries to sing songs that steve sang, he changes his voice and it just sounds terrible. if steve perry originally sang it, then only steve perry can sing it.

I miss him too, Steve Augeri was a good stand in, Jeff Scott Soto, while being a good singer, was a mistake and Arnel is good, but sings in a different key. The reality of it all is that if Steve Perry "could" still do it, he would..... The question is, would you rather have some form of Journey, or none at all? For me, it is the former!

I say it's OK to think Steve Perry is one of the greatest vocalists of all time...and that Arnel is right up there. I have a 6 year old and an 8 year old and they love Journey music no matter whether it's SP or AP singing. They think it's amazing regardless....and I DID NOT turn them on to it...they dug through my CD's and found 'Greatest Hits Live' and then 'Revelation' and the love both...that says a LOT to me. It is not racist to prefer Steve's voice to Arnel's.Arnel is Filipino and Steve is actually Portuguese a fact some people do not seem to realise.It is not against the law to prefer Steve''s voice to Arnel's.It is a personal opinion.For me personally Steve didn't just sing he sung every song with such emotion and that is why I love Steve's voice more.

( the official one with Steve's red "belly" shirt) my hubby thought Steve was a chick with a gruff voice. (You know this was the days before big screen TV's etc..) In fact it wasn't till MTV and the " escape tour video that my husband seen Steve with Journey, put 2 and 2 together, realizing this was the "girl" he had seen.

I have seen every Journey tour thru Raised on Radio. Perry is an incredible singer. But let's bear in mind, the success was from the bands success. Neither have done as well without the other. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

That's so cool how Steve holds the note while Neal switches from acoustic to electric. This is an outstanding performance by a great band with it's best lineup. Let's not forget the vocal talent of Greg Rollie (just the same way) and others he performed with Perry. Funny how replacement vocalists (with any band) are never as good as the original, kind of like when a step-parent moves into the house. Maybe because they were never involved with the writing of the music and lyrics?

Haven't had the pleasure of seeing the new guy yet, but after recently buying a Robert Fleischman CD I wonder what would of happened if he would of stayed on? He has a good voice but from the "Inside the Music" show, they got perry to get them on the radio. The rest is history.

I attended this Concert in 1978 at the Alladin Hotel. Journey Rocked that building. Brings back so many memories. I was 17 then. That was one of the baddest Concerts I've ever seen. Great sound and acoustics. Loud, Proud Harmonized Melody. Them were the days!!!!!
