  • Fantastic clip! Love that tone!

  • at 0:10 to 0:25 is a song in particular ? I mean you made it out or you took from a song ? if it's from a song what's the fuckin name !!!???

  • Nice

  • Realy Love your playn, & cool band!...I have one of these, they are the shit!!!!love tone bender II s & my Beano Boost too...thru an old ac 30/bandmaster..or anything!!...P.S you will love my band from little ol' NZ....comming soon .."Th' BarnSheiks" M

  • How much would you expect to pay to get a working one of these, anyone ?

  • this 1973 version sounds great bro! thanks for the demo!

  • better get yourself some cheap sunglasses

  • @BryanSmith66 Oh yeah!! :D

  • One of Jimmy Page's pedals. They don't make them like they used to. Why is that?

  • This is one of the closest approximations of early 70's era Billy Gibbons tone that I've heard. (Think "BBQ" from the Rio Grande Mud album.)

    Well done.

  • @Twangbanger72 Thanks i really appreciate it!! Rob

  • Awesome playing man!!! It was like I could hear the drums playing along with you, Love it.

    The pedal sounds sweeeet too.

    Cheers

  • @animalboy71 Thanks, really glad that you like it!! Rob

  • No reissue comes even close to this.

  • Great tone man.. It's the type of sound that clapton used with cream. fuzzy but still sharp as a razzor. thanks for a nice video!

  • @z1ckan Well thanks for taking the time to check it out, i really appreciate it!! Rob

  • @robertgroove66 how are the knobs sett?

  • @z1ckan Geez... I've done this one quite a while ago and couldn't tell you exactly, but usually it's Vol dimed, "Tone" halfway and Fuzz at around 11 o'clock.

  • this is the tone i hear in my head, wish i could get there

  • You sir, are an amazing guitarist

  • @BCGadgets Thank you very much sir!! Rob

  • If I didn't love my Super Fuzz so much, one of these babies would be my main lead tone. Gorgeous.

  • suhhh-WEET!

  • What is the difference between the reissue and the original sound and tonewise?

  • The one person who disliked this is obviously a hater who is just jealous of this amazing pedal. Awesome vid.

  • Oh wot a laaahvley Faaaz ;)

I come back to the is clip all the time - Love it ;)

  • That's what I love about Germanium transistors, they always sound like something is smouldering. Silicone just doesn't have that sound.

  • Jimmy Page ¡¡¡

  • @esdraks sounds like Led zeppelin 2 guitar tone ;/

  • What song is this riff from?

  • @skurtix are you playing eric clapton?

  • germanium components?

  • I have never tried one... but every time I hear the tone bender I turn into a fan of it...

  • @frenzexperiment I'm pretty sure that he used a MK II

  • amazing tone! This is exact the cream/zeppelin fuzz tone I'm looking for!

I saw an occasion of one of these pedals for 200 dollars. I don't know if that could be a good pedal, I thought they would be a lot more expensive since these are not build anymore, and still many people are looking for a tonebender. How much did you pay for this one?

    gr

    Bart

  • @bartcornelissen jimmy page actually used this pedal

  • Amazing tone!

  • Did Sola Sound Ltd go out of business?

  • @ureadmymind theyve started production again, just google macaris and it should be the top result :)

  • All the good players say the same thing. "No, my playing sucked on that.". And meanwhile everyone around them is saying "Dude, that was awesome, man! You rock.". Nice playing, by the way.

I have a Throbak Overdrive Boost, which is a Colorsound Overdriver clone w/ extra mods) and that thing is incredible, but I really want a MKIII-style Tonebender (Was there a MKIV?). Those are very-versatile fuzzes.

  • @gangtwanger I'm building the mklll tonebender

go to orbitbuilder thanks and let me know what you think

  • thats the same pedal jimmy page uses

  • Is this an MK1, MK1.5 or MK2 tonebender?

  • Yeah baby yeah! That's what I'm talking about!

  • Sounds like BFG

  • WTF! That's a beautiful pedal. OUTSTANDING TONE! And, nice demo playing, btw.

    Cheers,

    T

  • Thanks T!!

  • Beautiful tone! But a whole lot is in the fingers.. this guy is a great player. Fuzzes are very sensitive to picking, in a certain way.. you can get a very dynamic and more "distortion-like" tone, like in this clip. This is the way I wan't a fuzz to sound.. not too woofy and not to harsh.

  • Thank you!! I totally agree. I get a lot of great comments about this pedal and more than a few messages from people who'd like to buy it, but the truth is that there's a lot of fuzz pedal around, new and old, and if i take the time to set one up to my liking, i get my sound. Take the time to find how your gear work. It's that simple.

    Rob

  • sounds good, but ain't nuttn special about it... many modern fuzzes can do that.. fuck vintage douchbags!

  • OH FUZZ OFF......HA HA HA...lol.

  • lol!! Or FAZ OFF!! Since it's a British made pedal. ;)

  • lol yeah i am a brit... i had one of the old COLORSOUND overdrives in the early eighties..god knows what happened to it (be worth a mint now)...oh well i'll fazz off then lol..

  • The Overdriver. There's some footage of Jeff Beck in the mid '70s where he demonstrate his gear and that's what he was using. Yeah i'm pretty sure that they worth a lot of dough now, but i think that they reissued them not long ago.

  • yeah they did..ridiculously expensive tho!...but hey the schematics are out there might have a go at bulding one or even the supa sustain....bit of nostalgia..lol..keep on fuzzin...

  • @robertgroove66 yes but he describes it as a BOOSTER...

  • What guitar and amp are you using ??

  • A Tele and a tweed Champ set clean at about 3.

    Rob

  • nice playing,!!!!

which germanium transistors did u use?? it sounds greate

  • Thanks!! they're the original transistors, i don't remember the type though.

    Rob

  • Amazing fuzz!

I build one up by myself.. and it sounds almost the same (probably because i#ve got an other guitar/amp)

btw. it's easier than you think to build up a tonebender by yourself.^^

  • I agree, ain't no rocket science here, as long as you get the good transistors and know which side of the soldering iron to hold you're good. :) Having vintage gear is sweet, but they won't automatically sound better. It's what you do with it.

    Rob

  • If only they could make fuzzes like these nowadays.

  • 2 words... HELL YEAH

  • nice playing

  • that sounds awesome man!

  • Thanks!!

    Rob

  • Ohk Thanks!!!! I know this is most likely a no, but is there any chance you would sell this to me now or anytime soon? Ive seemd to look everywhere and cant find an original one. If you would how much?

  • Sorry but It's sleeping with his other vintage friends and they're real close ;) I got offers every week for it, i don't know why... You know it's just a fuzz. If you after that sound there's a lot of clones out there. It's not the gear it's the way you use it, your setup and the way you play. On most of the vid on this channel a rarely play with the same stuff and always manage to sound like me... for better or worst :D

    Rob

  • its cool im probably geting a clone soon hopefully

  • the vintage tweed champ probably doesn't hurt here. You could plug a toaster into that and sound toneful.

    vid sounds great

  • The Champ was setup clean at about 3 so my camera wouldn't distort and to let my friend Chris (the reason i posted this) hear the sound of the pedal. But you're right Tweed Champs are amazing amps. Never tried to plug a toaster, but my juice maker makes them way smoother when plugged in the Champ ;)

    Have a great holiday season!!

    Rob

  • i want a pedal that sounds like this but one that can be good for cream hendrix and mostly zeppelin should i get the analogman sun face or the mjm brit bender?

  • They are so many good ones. Personally i like both tones and used a Sun Face for years as a gain booster, but i prefer the tightness of tone benders. As for which clone is better, it's a matter of taste and how you use it. I think that if you're looking for those early Page tones but still want some of Clapton's tone. Go with a TB clone. Never tried the BB though, which is funny as Michael lives at about 15 min from my place. Will have to give it a try one day...

    Rob

  • yeah ive been looking around for a great fuzz for a while and the mjm sounds the closest to this one i also love the univox supa fuzz which are next to impossible to find. would it be a waste to get a tonebender clone and the analogman sun face on one board?

  • Why not if you can afford it, but there's another option. I year ago i stumble onto a used Lovepedal White Dragon from when they used to hand wire them which has nothing to do with the new "everything on the pcb" that they are selling now. that pedal enable you to go from a Dallas Rangemaster type boost to a Tone Bender and a Fuzz Face depending on how you set it up. If you want an idea of how it sound like, check out our version of "Too Rolling Stone" that's what i'm using on both solos.

    Rob

  • clapton probably used this but ive heard that he also used a univox super fuzz probably used both

  • I always thought that Clapton used a Fuzz Face with Cream, but then i read that he also used a Marshall Supa Fuzz which make sense as his buddy Townshend was using one around that time ('67-'68). He then switched for the Univox in late '68.

    Rob

  • oh my fucking god.... i need one of these pedals i don't care how much these are the debt is worth it....

  • Rob that's a dream, I want a TB now :)

If I only could be sure the new ones sound that way...

  • It's my favorite fuzz. Never tried the new ones, so i can't really tell.

    Rob

  • Did clapton use a tonebender?

  • yes, in Cream he use that and a wah wah.

  • This is officially my dream tone tone. That sounds incredible

  • Thanks!!

    Rob

  • Where can i get one of these? So nice, good playing too.

  • Pretty hard to tell. Pawnshops? The web? Your neighbor (well you never know!!? :) I got it a long time ago and got lucky.

    Thanks for dropping by!!

    Rob

  • nice sound !

  • Thanks bro!!

    Rob

  • groovy Rob ya I like this sola sound tone bender fuzz it has a cool tone to it....thanks Rob your the man...three beers salute goes out to you brother......peace....Freddie

  • I bought a new Supa Tone Bender in Macaris a couple of years ago, but this one blows it away!

  • Never tried the new ones, i don't know if all the old ones are like this one but i really like mine. I also have a '67 Marshall Supa Fuzz that is pretty cool. I also posted a short demo of it, you might enjoy watching this one as well.

    Thanks for dropping by!!

    Rob

  • I'm wearing this video OUT! Killer tone! Cheers!

  • Thank you very much Trina!!

    Rob

  • I recently bought this pedal and it is the BEST PEDAL EVER!

  • nice, this is the pedal jimmy page used...def can hear that tone.

  • Thanks! I think he used one of the earlier versions without the tone control, and he also used a fuzz box that Roger Mayer made him back in the mid '60s.

    Rob

  • you are correct. The MK II Page used is very different than the 3-Knob tonebender shown here. :)

  • i saw many videos about tone bender pedal...also colorsound and mk....nothing..your tone bender is best ever i heard!!

  • Hey, thank you very much!! I guess i got lucky with that one.

    Rob

  • @andrewjeff Hey check out my demo of Sola Sound ToneBenders. Thanks and let me know what you think.

    orbitbuilder

  • @orbitbuilder yes i'have seen...very nice bro!

  • Man, this is one of the best fuzz pedals i've ever had.

  • holy jesus, that is some fucking sweet tone, nice chops too!

  • Thanks bro!!

    Rob

  • Try to play the Stairway to heaven solo

  • Nothing ever seems to sound as good as the original.

  • Would anyone happen to know if this is what Randy California of Spirit was using back on the first Spirit album?

  • I think that he was using a Jordan Bosstone. Thanks for dropping by!

    Rob

  • How much for this pedal ? I really like the fuzz.

  • how do you get this sound out of it ? I have the new JMI Tonebender, wich is a replica of the earlier Tonbender (MKII), but it never sounds like yours or like Led Zeppelin or cream. Can you help me in some way. I use a vox ac 15cc, maybe the amplifier doesn´t like this fuzz, but my Cornell firste fuzz and the JMI Rangemaster work perfect with it.

  • I just plugged an old Tele in a Tweed Champ, didn't crank the amp it was about 3. on the TB, the level was way up he tone knob at around 11 so was the fuzz level.

    Rob

  • great demo and great sounding pedal. I see from the list of videos you have one heel of a collection of vintage pedals, I am sooooo jealous!!

What do you think of the Hudson Electronics Stroll On if you have had a chance to play one?? Decent clone??

  • Thanks!! No, haven't had the chance yet, but there's so many great clones around. I just got lucky finding some good old pedals, but honestly these days i'm playing through and "older" Lovepedal White Dragon that can get a nice Tone Bender sound. So yeah, go with a clone and save money!!

    Rob

  • Great fuzzy sound! Like a knife's edge!

  • how do you compare this to the NKT275 fuzz face you used to have?

  • 2 different beasts. i prefer the TB as a fuzz through a clean amp, and the NKT for pushing a slightly overdriven amp.

    Rob

  • reissue don't sound like this!

  • Sounds fantastic...Beck on Blow Blow:) Liked your little nod to Ed's solo:)

  • Thank you!! yeah, it does sound like the chords in Eddie's solo segment...

    Rob

  • damn this thing is awesome.

  • Great playing and awesome tone... I have a Fulltone Soulbender but it is definitely on the wild side, not sweet in a vintage way like this...

  • Thanks Bro!! yeah there's something about this Tone-bender that i don't hear in the clones. it's warm, but still cut through.

    Rob

  • Is there a fuzz pedal that you have played with yourself and think that can get very close to this? Not a vintage one but one that I can find today in a "normal" (more or less) price?

  • i have tried many, and there's always a way to get a good sound out of most of them. these days i'm playing through a Lovepedal White Dragon which enable you to go from a Rangemaster to a Fuzz Face and MKII Tone-bender just by dialing the knobs. i'll probably do a demo soon. also their old hand wired version of the Karl Fuzz sound great when dial right. i have demoed that one already, i'll send it to you.

    Rob

  • how much is one of those

  • nice playing, and you mention steve hackett in the tags!!!! haha, one question, how good would this sound on a 100w marshall solid state amp?

  • Thanks!! Beats me!! lol!! i know that Steve at one point was using a a Marshall Supa Fuzz (which i also have, made by Sola Sound, and are pretty much the same as a Tone-Bender) through 100w H&H transistor amp.

    Rob

  • Rough, jesus if thats rough, I'd love to see you jam on a good day lol. Awesome tone though, fuzz is my favourite distortion effect for a guitar and you nailed it.

  • lol Thanks!! i'm with you. i'd take anything with germanium transistors over a Tube Screamer or one of it's clones... even though i use them once in a while ;)

    Rob

  • sick sick tone...I love it!!!

  • Thanks Bro!!

    Rob

  • refreshing to see someone just play the fucking thing from the off rather than take it out the box and show ya the box for 2 minutes

  • LOL i know what you mean!! well this didn't came with the box. so... :D

    Rob

  • Nice video, Robert! Cool playing!

  • Hey...cool Rob ....I dig that tone ! *****

  • If you think that's rough then heaven help the rest of us.lol.Great stuff M.Groove.

  • Thanks for the video. I just finished building a B.Y.O.C. kit that's a copy of the MKII Tonebender and I used your tone in this video as a benchmark for biasing the transistors. You helped med nail a great fuzz tone!

  • Hey thanks!! that's really cool Bro!!

    Rob

  • What kind of Tone bender did Jimmy Page use on the first Zeppelin albums?

  • probably a VOX that Roger Mayer had modded for him. not sure though...

    Rob

  • Okey! Thank you.

  • It was a Sola Sound Tonebender MKII. There might have been some mods to it though there's no solid proof of what he did if anything.

  • no, it also has three transistors OC75, only the early one´s had two transistors I think, like the MkI

  • wow, great sound, sounds like Clapton in Cream. Ordered the new JMI Tonebender, hope it delivers the same sound

  • Thanks!! i think the JMI is a recreation of the early 2 transistor Tonebenders. mines the later 3 trannies version. they both sound cool though. it depends on what sound you're looking for.

    Rob

  • best sounding fuzz demo on youtube and most accurate recreation of a vintage sound.

  • Thank you very much for that awesome comment!!

    Rob

  • Tasty, real tasty!

  • Thanks Eddie!!

    Rob

  • 5 stars for sound && playing.

Anyone have any idea where to obtain one of these ?

I would really like to have it, but I don't want to end up buying some 'limited' or some 1.. 2 .. 3 versions, i want this one :)

Also, I live in Bosnia, so i would never own one, if no one knows some guitar shop that sends international packages, and accept wire transfer.

Imagine the frustration this causes me.

  • thanks!!

you know there are pretty good tone-bender clones out there that sound as good as this. a lot of your sound comes from your fingers and soul anyway.

    Rob

  • That pedal is superb great sounding fuzz, what amp are you running it through, it makes a great combination.

  • Thanks!! a '69 Tele through a late '50s tweed Champ. i wanted to reproduce the sound of Jimmy Page's early albums. you that Tele/Tonebender/Supro thing... but i didn't want to play any Page licks, so it ended up sounding like ZZ Top or something...

    Rob

  • That is THE best fuzz tone I have ever heard.

  • Thank you Alex!!

    Rob

  • definitely best fuzz sound that i found on youtube!5 stars!

  • Thank you Bro!! glad you like it!!

    Rob

  • Inspiring playing and tone! I had to go pick up the Tele and plug in the fuzz after hearing this. :) Although my playing pales in comparison. :/ hehe

  • Thank you so much! it's greatly appreciated my friend!!

    Rob

  • Great sound dude. I am by now an expert on sounds on clips like these having searched for days. This sound is awesome. The kind I am looking for.

  • thanks Bros!! glad that you liked it, and took the time to let me know.

    Rob

  • Ce fuzz sonne un peu comme le Soul-Bender Fulltone. Vavoir mon video et dis-moi ce que tu en penses.

    Salut

  • Oh Ya!! That has some Texas Blues written all over it! Love it!

  • love your style suits the pedal

  • thank you so much, i really appreciate it my friend!!!

    Rob

  • wow that would sound great into a marshall

  • Where can i get one of these?

  • they're making reissue, and clones. they're all over the net. if you're handy with a solder iron BYOC are selling kits. as for a vintage one, they can be anywhere...

    Rob

  • Do you think that the byoc clones would sound like this? And what is a solder iron?? Cause im thinking of getting one from byoc.

  • Sorry! soldering iron. can't tell for sure there's so many variables, the type of transistors, aging of the components...

    Rob

  • but if you use the stuff they give you to do it with, will it sound similar?

  • i have no idea, but it'll certainly be in the same ballpark!! as far as i'm concern, your sound is in your soul and hand. it's just a matter of working with it, and find your sound.

    Rob

  • I'll second that too with the BYOC clone!

Let me give you guys an insight on the following Sola Sound Tonebenders, the Mark 1.5and the Colorsound Supa Tonebender.

The Mark 1.5 (2-transistor circuit) is very similar to the early Arbiter fuzz face circuit, but it used Mullard OC75 PNP transistors. To do this clone, get the kit from General Guitar Gadgets for you can make the PNP or NPN version and instead of using the AC128 or NKT275, use the OC75 transistors.

  • Secondly, the Colorsound Supa Tonebender is actually a clone of the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi Distortion/Sustainer without the first two diodes in the first stages (and I think also a couple caps might have to be changed as well, could be wrong). Get either clone kits from BYOC or GGG for this one.

If you want, I can send you the website links from where I got this information. Send me a message.

  • Thanks for sharing the info bro!!

    Rob

  • Hey Rob, did you sell this pedal?

    -Chris

  • no. i'm keeping this one. can't sell 'em all ;)

    Rob

  • Update everyone! Correction on the Sola Sound Tonebender MK 1.5.

Like I said before, The MK 1.5 (2-transistor circuit) is almost like the Arbiter fuzz face, but it used Mullard OC75 PNP transistors. Plus, it also consisted of changing two capacitors, one resistor, and Volume tone pot.

To do this clone, get the "Fuzz Face Complete Kit" or PCB from General Guitar Gadgets for you can wire it for PNP or NPN Transistors Again, use the OC75 transistors.

  • Also, get the E.S.V. Fuzz kit or PCB from Build Your Own Clone (or the old Ultimate Fuzz kit). Since this kit is wired for NPN Transistors, you can use NTE103A's (the NPN equivalency to OC75's), or use the OC75's but you would have to switch the polarity of the circuit.

You can also get the Fuzz Face Circuit board over at Tonepad.

And last but not least, any Dunlop Germanium Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face pedals.

Send me a message & I'll walk you through what change in the circuit.

  • Was that the MKII or the rare MKIII?
