Had a ex once who moved in. I went to work one day, and told her to make herself at home. Came home to find out she took my cats to a shelter. SHE DID NOT LIKE CATS...I asked her which shelter...she told me..I went there...got my cats back...they were so scared, till they saw me...Came back home...she argued with me..I said..Dont unpack...leave now..MY HOUSE..MY CATS..MY FRIENDS!
Why would anyone dump the pet if the couple got divorced. This doesn't make any god damn sense, obviously someone wanted it to begin with so they would end up taking it.
I got divorced, I ended up with my cats, his dog, and his cat (he left his dog, and said his girlfriend was allergic to cats.) So I had 3 cats and a golden retriever. I found a place to live that had a yard for the dog (at higher expense than if I hadn't needed the space) and I moved them all, with me, 150 miles to another state, a few years later, when I was laid off and relocated.
There are reasons to surrender your pets, but 'Convenience' is not one of them.

@sync380 No kidding - I'd need my pet even more if going through a breakup.

I was divorced, too. I would live in my car or under a bridge before I would take my dogs to a shelter.

@sequoyahbean What if you were down on your luck? Wouldn't you consider what's best for your pets?

I got divorced and had to move away from my home town but my cat came with me. There was no way in hell I would ever let my cat go to a shelter.

I got a divorce from my husband. And the dogs stayed. They're family, for life.
