  • Is this a race that Von Trips died ?

  • watching this stuff is so much fun! todays technology kills it for me

  • We lost Taffy von Tripps on this day....

  • Does anyone know who the speaker is?

  • There's something very special about this version on Monza. I don't know why, maybe because even during modern F1 races, as they scurry off towards Curva Grande, for a fleeting instance you catch a glimpse of the start of the old oval. I would also definitely advise people to get Grand Prix Legends and download the Monza with its original oval section. Scary shit!

  • RIP Wolfgang Reichsgraf Berghe von Trips !!!

    The true 1st german F1-champion !!!

  • This is probably the only track in motor racing history that consisted of a full oval and road course in the same lap!

  • Lotus Climax !! nice

  • I have a Phil Litho by Paul Kane winning at Monza and the WDC in 1961. Forza Ferrari!

  • Love it but please get rid of the music.

  • i would absolutely love to drive on this version of Monza

  • @BleedThemBones Actually, In a certain way you can .Just install the fabulous Sim Racing Game GRAND PRIX LEGENDS and you can download a track MONZA 10 K that alterante the Banking and the Road course

  • Ferrari was playing his usual mind games in this race. Once Ferrari's fair-haired lad in part for his spirited drive of the oversized Dino in 1958 against Indy competition at Monza's "Race of the Two Worlds", Phil found himself on Ferrari's hind teet behind von Trips at Monza in 1961. Trips received a new engine for Monza, and Hill was indignant when he heard about the team's favoritism for von Trips. He loudly demanded -- and also got -- a new engine for this race.

  • So cool to look back at scenes like this .wondering what was going on in the pits ,did anyone f up & get fired on the spot ,what the announcer was saying over the pa,or if some guy was talking his girl friend into a bj up in the cheap seats :)

  • I'm glad they didn't show the accident. I hate crashes in motor racing.

  • This is from John Tates DVDs I think. If you guys like more of this stuff with good commentaries like this, they are on amazon. All vids 1953-73(only sparse from 67 and forward though), are filmed by a rich amateur guy with a camera and the commentary is read from his handwritten notes from the races by his son. Films werent found till after his death. Seen all 9 dvds now, amazing stuff!

  • There's a new book out "Phil Hill: A Driving Life". Kind of pricey at $75.00, but I recommend it. It's a collection of the articles Phil wrote for Road & Track magazine over the years. Interesting read.

  • I love the old Monza layout and those cars were hands down the best looking imo. Art.

  • It's not Carlo Chiti, It must be pronounced Keetee

  • the last time the monza banking was used for F1

  • A wonderful documentary !

    Thank you very much !

  • Masten Gregory, Phil Hill, Richie Ginther. 3 Americans in a Formula One race. That'll never happen again.

  • And Dan Gurney too! 4 Americans. How'd that ever happen?

  • @RRaquello That was the early 60's: USA and European cars manufacturers were quit near of each other at that time... Ford, GM and Chrysler were doing good modern car for the time and road racing was popular in USA (Sebring 12 hours popularity "forcing" the creation of what would become the 24 hours of Daytonas) and... Well, racing did slow a lot during WWII but the race track in USA were not destroy.

So, you got an addition of factor and the situation break up in the 70's.

  • I think the last time was '78 at The Glen (Andretti, Lunger and Rahal). F1 hadn't been fully converted from a sport to a closely held entertainment corporation yet, so you could often end up with an extra American driving a one off there.

  • @RRaquello You forgot Dan Gurney -- that's 4, with Hill first and Dan second.

  • @osdotf Thanks for remembering Dan Gurney ! :-)

  • @DaDa2Phlux Remembering him was easy -- I had Car and Driver's "Dan Gurney for President" bumper sticker on my car in 1964. As C&D put it: "His middle name, Sexton, brings to mind selfless men laboring in little country churches, working night and day for the benefit of their friends and neighbors—significance that will not be lost upon the fundamentalist rural electorate."

  • @DaDa2Phlux You can still read David E Davis Jr's original C&D presidential "endorsement" on the All-American Racer site--click on "Bits & Pieces." Italy '61 was the first GP result I ever saw in a Detroit newspaper the following day, probably because of Hill's championship; prior to then I'd anxiously wait several months for them to appear in SCI/C&D and especially Road & Track where I would all but memorize Henry N Manney III's race reports. I still catch myself using "Manneyisms."

  • @RRaquello

Do not forget Dan Gurney, number 26. See 3:08, third column from the right, third name,

  • Nigo82

Sadly tarnished by the death of Wolfgang Von Trips and 14 other spectators!!

  • Ricardo Rodriguez was nicknamed "El Chamaco"(The Kid", he was considered as a potential world champion and he clearly demonstrated in Monza, starting in front of many great drivers with an inferior car,

but unfortunately died in the first Mexican GP. Thanks for posting this vid!!!

  • I Can't Thank You ENOUGH For This Clip...

  • great vid. where did you get it?
