I saw him a few times but I think the most memorable one was when he was so damned drunk he could barely talk, let alone sing, and he walked out on stage with a pair of pajama pants on and a pair of house shoes and jabbered a bunch of stuff no one could understand into the mic and then took about three steps and walked off the edge of the stage and busted his ass. His band took over and between them all taking turns on signing it was actually a pretty good show. That was about 1989.
It surely could have been recorded by someone else with a better voice - no doubt - but consider this... Would they have felt it like this? Did they live it? Did they sacrifice a piece of their soul to live it in the first place? No, No and No.
No one could have done this better. One of the best country songs of all times IMHO.
alright girls. calm down. The new guys are not even in the same class of country as Stewart or the likes of him. He did not have great stage presence but it was what it was. We loved him nonetheless because of the uniqueness of his voice and what he brought to the music scene. You either loved his music or you didnt. He never recorded this song with "grit". It wasn't meant to be that way, i dont think.
Gary Stewart= great writer..... Horrible performer. Its like a bad joke they even filmed this or recorded it. Stewart had to have written this song for someone with a voice right?
@beenchopped08 While I respect your opinion, may I share mine? Gary Steawart had a unquie voice with a strange feel. Either you got it or you didn' t. You are a little young to know about the real Honkey Tonks and Icehouses. But, the Tonkers got Gary. Another man's music that I love is Willy DeVille. Yes, I say he has a terrible voice but he' s like Gary. Either you get him or you don' t. Me? I don' t care for Taylor Swift. She' s not country to me. But, we all have an opinion. Don' t we?
@beenchopped08 Do some research buddy, then you may understand this guy a lil more.Obviously he is fucked up here, look up some of his other videos and tell me he is a bad performer then. As for his voice is concerned that is a FUCKING SLAP in the face, the man has soul. RIP GARY STEWART!
@beenchopped08 - I'll tell you something - I never had the pleasure of seeing Gary perform, and you can't really get anything from these videos (in my opinion), so that leaves me with third-party reports. I've been in Ft. Pierce now for about a year and have met many people who knew Gary and who played with Gary and they all say the same thing - HE WAS AWESOME. All I can say is that I never really heard his stuff before moving here and it's some of the best country music ever! RIP

What a shame he's not around anymore. At 23 years old now, I would have loved to have met him. It's strange how my own songwriting and overall music style has taken a turn towards Gary's honky-tonk recently, but I've listened to him for years... I've been through a lot in the past few months. @moondancerrecords ..used to have such a good time at Cedar Creek, Gary was the greatest, love every minute of that time or listening to his music! Still have a belt and a few other things with signatures, lol.

@aeroshine Yes thats me. where did you find that pic?Id love to have a copy, as Ive lost mine. If you will, send it to ....sonnytackett297@yahoo.com.........by email. Thanks so much, Sonny T
Always listening to the great singers for over 50 years. I love music so much. I must tell you , Gary Stewart is the top star of the galaxies ! You can't sing and have a great voice like this time after time and make these great songs come real with so much feeling. Gary gave his" soul " in the songs time after time. No one else has ever come close to this wonderful singer. .
I would just like to tell you, when I saw this video, I cried. Great, big, shivering tears. He looked like he did the last time I saw him! I can't believe he's really gone. It just broke my heart and made me realize he'll never sing another song. He could make you feel that wherever you are..he'd been there, too. NO TALENT CAN REPLACE HIM! Hearts to you for sharing this!! May God bless you!!
I also had the great prviliage of seeing Gary many times at Marlow's and other places too.there are four generations in my family that listens to his music. He was, still is and always will be the best. love you miss you.
I saw Gary at Marlow's too, that night. He was drunk, but could still sing his songs and they cut you like a knife.........Will always be the KING OF HONKY TONK
the last time i seen gary was at marlow's in pike county ky...drunk as hell but having a good time.........truly missed....our band does this song but nothing like gary.....r.i.p....gary
Gary was probably the greatest honkytonk singer ever. I was lucky enough to see him about dozen times in dance halls around Texas. He was unique and from the heart. When you were sad and lonely after a bad breakup Gary could ease the pain. Best thing about him he was down to earth, just a regular joe.
How many life storys are told with this song. Gary Stewart was one of the greatest Country singers of all time. His voice could cut you like a knife. You felt every word he sang. It's a shame that he's gone
@Clint8179 i agree i saw him in the 90's central texas...temple...harker heights he didnt show,,,,,,,a few years i was truck driver passinf thru ft worth one nite and seen a sign that said "gary stewart live " i wish i would have stopped
@limbo22222 .....Yeah, its my brother Ricks birthday, and Rick was also friends with Gary. Now, they are both gone , so this day has many meanings for me.Its coming up in a few days, so I'll be posting some things on Facebook. Please check it out if you have time, Sonny T
Thank you so very much for posting this clip!!!!Gary Stewart is my favorite honky tonk singer of all time and i really appreciate this clip because clips like this are very, very rare and almost impossible to find!!!!
I miss this guy.! I lost 3 uncles at once while traveling to a rodeo. When their items were return to us, all of Gary Stewarts Albums were in the box. My uncles love listening to his music when traveling the rodeos trails. I miss my uncles and gary, RIP.

May God bless you!!

great vibrato. great singer with great feel they don't have many like this anymore
leeman1971 3 years ago
They don't and that's what so great about him! Almost everyone in my family loves him
SaySay4Evr 3 years ago
Gary was probably the greatest honkytonk singer ever. I was lucky enough to see him about dozen times in dance halls around Texas. He was unique and from the heart. When you were sad and lonely after a bad breakup Gary could ease the pain. Best thing about him he was down to earth, just a regular joe.
